Mexico’s national team coach, Miguel Herrera, has banned his players from smoking, drinking and having sex saying; “It’s not a party.”

Herrera told Reforma: “If a player can't go one month or 20 days without having sexual relations, then they are not prepared to be a professional player.

“Let’s play a World Cup, we’re not going to a party,” he added.

Mexico are in Group A with hosts, Brazil, with whom they have a rich World Cup history, Cameroon and Croatia.

“All the players we have selected have a pretty good resume, they all have won great things, they have been champions and obviously, they know what they want to achieve.

“So then we will not be looking for sex or having sex at the World Cup just to have it, we are going to go after what we came for, a competition that gives us the opportunity to rise above and do something really great.

“So I don't think that the guys even have this [sex] on their minds. They don't have an idea about it. We talked about it because there was a buzz about it and we got criticised because I commented that in a team you have to worry about what is best for the team.

“In a club, you lose one week and you get a second chance the next week. But on a national team, you lose once and you are out of the World Cup.

“I am not thinking about prohibiting sex. I am thinking about football. I hope the players are thinking the same way. Forty days of sexual abstinence is not going to hurt anyone,” he added.

Defending champions Rafael Nadal is through to the fourth round of the French Open.
The record eight-time winner, who is yet to drop a set in his current campaign, made a grand total of 10 errors before seeing off Argentina’s Leonardo Mayer 6-2, 7-5, 6-2 on Day 7.

The top seed rattled through his opening set in the Court Philippe Chatrier in 30 minutes and dominated the tie all through en-route to extending his record at Roland Garros to 62-1.
“When I see the Chatrier stadium full, it’s very emotional for me,” said the Spaniard, whose business man-like approach to the third round tie threw the 65th-ranked Mayer off balance.

He will play Dusan Lajovic for a place in the fourth round.
Nadal’s fellow Spaniard David Ferrer also made a walk of his third round tie with Andera Seppi earlier on Saturday. Ferrer beat Seppi 6-2 7-6 6-3.
The Spanish fifth seed will play South Africa’s Kevin Anderson next after he took the battle of the big servers thanks to Ivo Karlovic’s retirement on Court Two.
Frenchman Gael Monfils outlasted Italy’s Fabio Fognini 7-5 2-6 4-6 6-0 2-6 in a thrilling game on Court Suzzane Lenglen.
In the women’s draw, fifth seed Petra Kvitova was toppled 6-7 (3-7) 6-1 9-7 by 2009 champion Svetlana Kuznetsova in the third round.
A leg injury disrupted the Russian’s progress, after winning the first set on tie-break.
The 27th-ranked Kuznetsova next plays Lucie Safarova, who saw off Ana Ivanovic 6-3 6-3.
“I left out there everything I could,” said Kuznetsova. “I came up with a win, but I was very close to the loss as well. I was very strong mentally and really happy with that.”
The highest seed remaining in the women’s draw, with Serena Williams, Li Na and Agnieszka Radwanska already out, Simona Halep (fourth seed) beat Maria-Teresa Torro 6-3, 6-0 to set up a fourth round tie with American Sloane Stephens.
Stephens advanced into the last-16 with a 6-3, 6-4 win nover Ekaterina Makarova.

There were no surprises in the Dutch national team final 23-man list released by Coach Louis van Gaal on Saturday morning.

As expected, Hamburg's Rafael van der Vaart, a key player when the Dutch reached the final in South Africa four years ago, was not included in the final list after it was reported earlier that the midfielder suffered an injury setback in training.

Among those that made the final cut were Arjen Robben, Robin van Persie and Wesley Sneijder, while Swansea goalkeeper, Michel Vorm and Newcastle’s Tim Krul will also be in the plane to Brazil.

1859 Big Ben goes into operation in London

The famous tower clock known as Big Ben, located at the top of the 320-foot-high St. Stephen's Tower, rang out over the Houses of Parliament in Westminster, London, for the first time on this day in 1859.

After a fire destroyed much of the Palace of Westminster--the headquarters of the British Parliament--in October 1834, a standout feature of the design for the new palace was a large clock atop a tower. The royal astronomer, Sir George Airy, wanted the clock to have pinpoint accuracy, including twice-a-day checks with the Royal Greenwich Observatory. While many clockmakers dismissed this goal as impossible, Airy counted on the help of Edmund Beckett Denison, a formidable barrister known for his expertise in horology, or the science of measuring time.

Denison's design, built by the company E.J. Dent & Co., was completed in 1854; five years later, St. Stephen's Tower itself was finished. Weighing in at more than 13 tons, its massive bell was dragged to the tower through the streets of London by a team of 16 horses, to the cheers of onlookers. Once it was installed, Big Ben struck its first chimes on May 31, 1859. Just two months later, however, the heavy striker designed by Denison cracked the bell. Three more years passed before a lighter hammer was added and the clock went into service again. The bell was rotated so that the hammer would strike another surface, but the crack was never repaired.

The name "Big Ben" originally just applied to the bell but later came to refer to the clock itself. Two main stories exist about how Big Ben got its name. Many claim it was named after the famously long-winded Sir Benjamin Hall, the London commissioner of works at the time it was built. Another famous story argues that the bell was named for the popular heavyweight boxer Benjamin Caunt, because it was the largest of its kind.

Even after an incendiary bomb destroyed the chamber of the House of Commons during the Second World War, St. Stephen's Tower survived, and Big Ben continued to function. Its famously accurate timekeeping is regulated by a stack of coins placed on the clock's huge pendulum, ensuring a steady movement of the clock hands at all times. At night, all four of the clock’s faces, each one 23 feet across, are illuminated. A light above Big Ben is also lit to let the public know when Parliament is in session.

1916 Battle of Jutland

Just before four o'clock on the afternoon of May 31, 1916, a British naval force commanded by Vice Admiral David Beatty confronted a squadron of German ships, led by Admiral Franz von Hipper, some 75 miles off the Danish coast. The two squadrons opened fire on each other simultaneously, beginning the opening phase of the greatest naval battle of World War I, the Battle of Jutland.

After the Battle of Dogger Bank in January 1915, the German navy chose not to confront the numerically superior British Royal Navy in a major battle for more than a year, preferring to rest the bulk of its strategy at sea on its lethal U-boat submarines. In May 1916, however, with the majority of the British Grand Fleet anchored far away, at Scapa Flow, off the northern coast of Scotland, the commander of the German High Seas Fleet, Vice Admiral Reinhard Scheer, believed the time was right to resume attacks on the British coastline. Confident that his communications were securely coded, Scheer ordered 19 U-boat submarines to position themselves for a raid on the North Sea coastal city of Sunderland while using air reconnaissance crafts to keep an eye on the British fleet's movement from Scapa Flow. Bad weather hampered the airships, however, and Scheer called off the raid, instead ordering his fleet—24 battleships, five battle cruisers, 11 light cruisers and 63 destroyers—to head north, to the Skagerrak, a waterway located between Norway and northern Denmark, off the Jutland Peninsula, where they could attack Allied shipping interests and with luck, punch a hole in the stringent British blockade.

Unbeknownst to Scheer, however, a newly created intelligence unit located within an old building of the British Admiralty, known as Room 40, had cracked the German codes and warned the British Grand Fleet's commander, Admiral John Rushworth Jellicoe, of Scheer's intentions. Consequently, on the night of May 30, a British fleet of 28 battleships, nine battle cruisers, 34 light cruisers and 80 destroyers set out from Scapa Flow, bound for positions off the Skagerrak.

At 2:20 p.m. on May 31, Beatty, leading a British squadron, spotted Hipper's warships. As each squadron maneuvered south to better its position, shots were fired, but neither side opened fire until 3:48 that afternoon. The initial phase of the gun battle lasted 55 minutes, during which two British battle cruisers, Indefatigable and Queen Mary were destroyed, killing over 2,000 sailors. At 4:43 p.m., Hipper's squadron was joined by the remainder of the German fleet, commanded by Scheer. Beatty was forced to fight a delaying action for the next hour, until Jellicoe could arrive with the rest of the Grand Fleet.

With both fleets facing off in their entirety, a great battle of naval strategy began among the four commanders, particularly between Jellicoe and Scheer. As sections of the two fleets continued to engage each other throughout the late evening and the early morning of June 1, Jellicoe maneuvered 96 of the British ships into a V-shape surrounding 59 German ships. Hipper's flagship, Lutzow, was disabled by 24 direct hits but was able, before it sank, to sink the British battle cruiser Invincible. Just after 6:30 on the evening of June 1, Scheer's fleet executed a previously planned withdrawal under cover of darkness to their base at the German port of Wilhelmshaven, ending the battle and cheating the British of the major naval success they had envisioned.

The Battle of Jutland—or the Battle of the Skagerrak, as it was known to the Germans—engaged a total of 100,000 men aboard 250 ships over the course of 72 hours. The Germans, giddy from the glory of Scheer's brilliant escape, claimed it as a victory for their High Seas Fleet. At first the British press agreed, but the truth was not so clear-cut. The German navy lost 11 ships, including a battleship and a battle cruiser, and suffered 3,058 casualties; the British sustained heavier losses, with 14 ships sunk, including three battle cruisers, and 6,784 casualties. Ten more German ships had suffered heavy damage, however, and by June 2, 1916, only 10 ships that had been involved in the battle were ready to leave port again (Jellicoe, on the other hand, could have put 23 to sea). On July 4, 1916, Scheer reported to the German high command that further fleet action was not an option, and that submarine warfare was Germany's best hope for victory at sea. Despite the missed opportunities and heavy losses, the Battle of Jutland had left British naval superiority on the North Sea intact. The German High Seas Fleet would make no further attempts to break the Allied blockade or to engage the Grand Fleet for the remainder of World War I.

1929 Ford signs agreement with Soviet Union

After two years of exploratory visits and friendly negotiations, Ford Motor Company signed a landmark agreement to produce cars in the Soviet Union on this day in 1929.

The Soviet Union, which in 1928 had only 20,000 cars and a single truck factory, was eager to join the ranks of automotive production, and Ford, with its focus on engineering and manufacturing methods, was a natural choice to help. The always independent-minded Henry Ford was strongly in favor of his free-market company doing business with Communist countries. An article published in May 1929 in The New York Times quoted Ford as saying that "No matter where industry prospers, whether in India or China, or Russia, all the world is bound to catch some good from it."

Signed in Dearborn, Michigan, on May 31, 1929, the contract stipulated that Ford would oversee construction of a production plant at Nizhni Novgorod, located on the banks of the Volga River, to manufacture Model A cars. An assembly plant would also start operating immediately within Moscow city limits. In return, the USSR agreed to buy 72,000 unassembled Ford cars and trucks and all spare parts to be required over the following nine years, a total of some $30 million worth of Ford products. Valery U. Mesh auk, vice chairman of the Supreme Council of National Economy, signed the Dearborn agreement on behalf of the Soviets. To comply with its side of the deal, Ford sent engineers and executives to the Soviet Union.

At the time the U.S. government did not formally recognize the USSR in diplomatic negotiations, so the Ford agreement was groundbreaking. (A week after the deal was announced the Soviet Union would announce deals with 15 other foreign companies, including E.I. Du Pont de Nemours and RCA.) As Douglas Brinkley writes in "Wheels for the World," his book on Henry Ford and Ford Motor, the automaker was firm in his belief that introducing capitalism was the best way to undermine communism. In any case, Ford's assistance in establishing motor vehicle production facilities in the USSR would greatly impact the course of world events, as the ability to produce these vehicles helped the Soviets defeat Germany on the Eastern Front during World War II. In 1944, according to Brinkley, Stalin wrote to the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, calling Henry Ford "one of the world's greatest industrialists" and expressing the hope that "may God preserve him."

1941 Germans conquer Crete

On this day in 1941, the last of the Allies evacuated after 11 days of battling a successful German parachute invasion of the island of Crete. Crete is now Axis-occupied territory.

On the morning of May 20, some 3,000 members of Germany's Division landed on Crete, which was patrolled and protected by more than 28,000 Allied troops and an almost equal number of Greek soldiers. The German invasion, although anticipated, was not taken seriously; the real fear was of an attack from the sea. Those initial 3,000 parachutists were reinforced—to the tune of an additional 19,000 men, arriving by parachute drop, glider, and troop carrier.

The Allies remained optimistic; many of the German soldiers who dropped from the sky died or were injured on impact. The rest were undersupplied and inexperienced. But by the May 26, British General Bernard Freyberg, commander of the defense of Crete, already reported that their position was hopeless. Evacuation of Allied troops began on the 28th. By the night of the 31st, the last of the Allies that would make it out had left the seaport of Sphakia; 5,000 men would be left behind in the hands of the Germans. The total loss of Allied land soldiers in the Cretan engagements was 1,742; a further 2,265 sailors were lost at sea. Three cruisers and six destroyers had been sunk. The Germans suffered a loss of about 4,000 men.

Strangely, Hitler, despite the victory, considered his "losses" too great to pursue further gains in the Mediterranean and finally drive Great Britain out of the area.

1962 Architect of the Holocaust hanged in Israel

Near Tel Aviv, Israel, Adolf Eichmann, the Nazi SS officer who organized Adolf Hitler's "final solution of the Jewish question," was executed for his crimes against humanity.

Eichmann was born in Solingen, Germany, in 1906. In November 1932, he joined the Nazi's elite SS (Schutzstaffel) organization, whose members came to have broad responsibilities in Nazi Germany, including policing, intelligence, and the enforcement of Adolf Hitler's anti-Semitic policies. Eichmann steadily rose in the SS hierarchy, and with the German annexation of Austria in 1938 he was sent to Vienna with the mission of ridding the city of Jews. He set up an efficient Jewish deportment center and in 1939 was sent to Prague on a similar mission. That year, Eichmann was appointed to the Jewish section of the SS central security office in Berlin.

In January 1942, Eichmann met with top Nazi officials at the Wansee Conference near Berlin for the purpose of planning a "final solution of the Jewish question," as Nazi leader Hermann Goering put it. The Nazis decided to exterminate Europe's Jewish population. Eichmann was appointed to coordinate the identification, assembly, and transportation of millions of Jews from occupied Europe to the Nazi death camps, where Jews were gassed or worked to death. He carried this duty out with horrifying efficiency, and between three to four million Jews perished in the extermination camps before the end of World War II. Close to two million were executed elsewhere.

Diego Costa and Fernando Torres where part of Spain’s final 23-man World Cup list released by national team coach, Vincente del Bosque on Saturday.

Costa was a huge doubt after suffering a reoccurrence of a hamstring while playing for Atletico Madrid in the Champions League final against Real Madrid. The Brazilian born Spanish international was ruled out for two weeks casting doubt over his availability for the summer fiesta.

However, Del Bosque kept faith with the striker and Costa chances of making the final list was improved after news of progress in is recovery was made known to the public on Friday.

Perhaps the surprise inclusion in Spain’s list is Fernando Torres, the Chelsea striker have not had the best of seasons and it was widely expected that he will not make the final cut, however, after he scored in Friday’s 2-0 win against Bolivia, Del Bosque was quoted as saying that he has confidence in the striker’s abilities.

However, Manchester City duo of Alvero Negredo and Jesus Navas were dropped from the final 23-man list. Navas it would appear was unable to recover from an injury while Negredo was dropped due to the coach preference for David Villa.

Spain Final World Cup List:

Goalkeepers: Iker Casillas (Real Madrid), Pepe Reina (Napoli), David de Gea (Manchester United)

Defenders: Cesar Azpilicueta (Chelsea), Gerard Pique (Barcelona), Jordi Alba (Barcelona), Sergio Ramos (Real Madrid), Javi Martinez (Bayern Munich), Raul Albiol (Napoli), Juanfran Torres (Atletico Madrid).

The African Movie Academy Awards 2014 went down last weekend and it wasn't without its excitement, thrills and low moments.

It was the 10th edition of the ceremony and it was held at the Gabriel Okara Cultural Center, Yenegoa, Bayelsa State.
The fun part was definitely not complete without outstanding musical performances by Ghana's Fally Ipupa, Nigeria's Flavour Nabania and comedy from Aproko, Funny Bone.
The glorious moment when movie stars from all African nations walked the red carpet added its own side attraction to the night event.
Then the moment everyone had been waiting for arrived...calling of nominees and winners.

Nollywood should cover its eyes in shame as the movie industry always touted to be the Giant of Africa failed to live up to expectation.

But the likes of Clarion Chukwura, Patience Ozokwo, and Bob Manuel Ndoku left Bayelsa with smiles on their faces.

Following the unabated acts of terrorism perpetrated by the Islamic religious sect, Yusufiyya – which later became Boko Haram, since 2009, many questions have been asked by Nigerians and the international communities.

Prominent among these questions is how the militant group is raising funds to procure sophisticated weapons which they use to carry out their heinous attacks across Nigeria?
However, Premium Times reports that since 2009, the deadly sect has continued to deploy various tactics to sustain its resolve in undermining the Nigerian state.
It was gathered that in the onset, the sect began to embark on selective killings and maiming of politicians and security agencies.
Later on, according to the report, the terror group acquired the know-how on how to make Improvised Explosive Devices, IEDs, which it used mostly on security operatives, security formations and churches within and around Borno State.
In a bid to “promote the Jihad of g
od,” as they claim, the Islamist sect went from terror attack to attacking banks and other financial institutions, as well as the robbery of bullion vans in which millions of Naira were at different occasions stolen.
Between 2010 and 2012, the group resorted to extorting high personalities in Nigeria by sending text messages with threats on their lives if millions of Naira were not delivered to them at a designated rendezvous or harassing their victims by dropping sealed threat letters with a piece of live bullet asking for money.

When the presence of the Joint Task Force, JTF, continued to grow and increased development of counter intelligence by the Department of State Security, DSS, the Boko Haram sect resorted to kidnapping.
*Boko Haram attack in Jos
On January 30, 2012, the late spokesman of Boko Haram, Abul Qaqa had in a teleconference with journalists threatened that they would soon embark on abduction of spouses and children of security operatives and public office holders, for allegedly detaining their (Boko Haram) family members.
The terrorists did not start their threat until early this year, when the sect embarked on a ransom-driven kidnap of civilians. Most of their targets often gained their freedom after the payment of huge money by either government or relatives of the captives.
* File photo of Boko Haram attack at Nyanya garage in Abuja
The spokesman of JTF, Sagir Musa, on April 28, issued a caveat warning to residents of Maiduguri and environs that the Boko Haram had resort to kidnapping prominent citizen with the aim of getting money from their relatives.
Mr. Musa’s statement read, “Intelligence available to the Task Force has indicated that Boko Haram Terrorists have resolved to concentrate more on kidnappings than robbery. They alleged that kidnapping is more lucrative, less dangerous and requires short time to plan and execute. Similarly, a special kidnapping squad has been earmarked and tasked by the Boko Haram sect to kidnap persons who could be wealthy relations, politicians, business women/ men, traditional rulers, senior civil servants and foreigners alike.”
* Leader of Boko Haram, Abubakar Shekau (in the middle)
The above statement was made after the Boko Haram sect had carried out several successful kidnaps for ransom.
Prominent personalities in Nigeria and many other people, private civilians, are believed to have been kidnapped by the militants and likely paid heavy ransoms to gain their freedom without anyone knowing. While those who could not afford such heavy ransoms are alleged to have been killed.
The belief in security circles in Borno is that the sect increased its kidnap activities to fund its various violent operations across Northern Nigeria.
Many had hoped and are still hoping that the declaration of a State of Emergency in Borno and the subsequent massive deployment of troops there would halt the kidnap and other criminal activities of the sect.

African finance ministers and governors of Sub-Saharan Africa have agreed to partner with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) on major needs of the region.
Notice of the partnership is contained in a document tagged: ``Maputo Joint Declaration’’ released after the meeting of the group at the Africa Rising Conference on Friday in Maputo.

The Declaration stated that African ministers and governors and the IMF managing director had agreed to further strengthen the partnership between the Fund and its African membership.

They had also agreed to respond to the evolving needs of the sub-continent, it added.

According to the joint declaration, policy dialogue and capacity building will reflect the ambitious agenda aimed at upholding macro-economic agenda with policy action.

The action, it said, was designed to foster structural transformation and sustain strong and inclusive growth and overcome fragility in the system.

It noted that the partnership would also take into account the different needs of African membership, especially countries facing challenges of fragility and conflict.

The group and IMF boss agreed that it was imperative to address the infrastructure gap in Africa, adding that funding it required innovative approach.

``The ongoing reform of the IMF debt limits policy should seek to provide countries with enhanced flexibility in programme design to utilise a wider range of financing option," it said.

It said that strong institutions and continuous development of human capital were critical to successful economic and social development.

It added that the group and the Fund had agreed to collaborate in the areas of training and technical assistance.

``They called on IMF to further step up efforts to draw lessons from successful experiences within and outside Africa," it said.

This was disclosed by the foundation’s executive director, Dr. Florence Etta-Akin Aina, at the occasion of the foundation’s fifth grantees training on Friday in Benin City, Edo state.

Aina listed three core intervention areas of the foundation to include education, quality healthcare and income generation for women and youths.

The executive director also disclosed that 7 million persons have been treated of non-tropical diseases by the foundation within the same period.

She noted that this year alone, N77.5m grants have already be given to 11 organisations across the country, adding that seven of the 11 organisations were implementing Edo Community Fund projects.

She noted: “The foundation has funded 75 organisations to implement 117 projects in 18 states of the federation, including the federal capital territory. This year, a total of 288 project proposals were received for the 2014 grant cycle.

Dolphins FC of Port Harcourt Saturday afternoon churned out one of their best performance in recent weeks as the Coach Stanley Eguma tutored side cruised to 3-1 win over visiting Lobi Stars in one of the day’s Glo Premier League Match Day 17 fixtures.
The hero for the Garden City team in Saturday’s game was Ifeanyi Egwim who netted a hat trick and ‘singlehandedly’ secured all three points for his team.

Egwim hit the ground running as early as the 6th minute when he put the hosts in front to calm the nerves at the Port Harcourt stadium.

Lobi after the early setback seemed to guard their loins and were able to curtail Dolphins for the rest of the duration for the first half.

However Coach Eguma was able to fashion a better approach to the second half as Egwim doubled Dolphins' lead with just two minutes into the second half.

Any hope of Lobi getting a rare comeback was extinguished when Egwim completed his hat trick late on in the game thus making the solitary strike from Eche Idakwo somewhat inconsequential.

In Jos, Giwa FC may have walked over Nembe City as the troubled Baribote Boys were not available for their game.

According to a top official with Nembe City, the team bus broke down on their way to Jos and a request for a 24-hour shift was solicited for from the LMC.

There are indications that the LMC may have not acceded to the game shift thus meaning Giwa will get three points and three goals from the botched fixture.

However, while there was no excitement from Jos, Benin City was awash with goals as the game between Bayelsa United and Heartland FC after 75 minutes of action had produced six goals.

Interestingly it is the Naze Millionaires who are taking a 2-4 lead but will have to wait till 8 am tomorrow to complete their game owning to the heavy downpour in the ancient city of Benin.

The African Commission on Nuclear Energy (AFCONE), on Saturday, said plans were underway to use nuclear radiation on mosquitoes to combat malaria in Africa.
The AFCONE Chairperson, Amb. Abdulsamad Minty, made the disclosure at a news conference after the commission's Third Conference in Addis Ababa.

He said ``AFCONE is collaborating with the World Health Organisation (WHO) and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to conduct researches to evolve a nuclear radiation mechanism on mosquitoes to curb the spread of Malaria.’’

He added that the successes recorded by Southern African region in eradicating Tse-tse Fly would be applied to mosquitoes to eradicate Malaria.

Minty said that after the research, the commission would source for finance to put the research result into use to urgently tackle the scourge of malaria on the continent.

He stressed the need for more efforts by African nations to use technology for development and faster growth in the areas of agriculture, science, health and other economic sectors.

The AFCONE chairperson said ``the use of nuclear technology will assist the continent in jumping some steps in our development and industrialisation effort.’’

The Third Conference of States Parties to the African Nuclear-Weapon-Free Zone Treaty, also known as the Treaty of Pelindaba concluded its two-day meeting with a call for commitment to use nuclear technology to enhance development in Africa.

The Conference was attended by parties to the Treaty of Pelindaba and to its Protocols, as well as by relevant regional and international organisations.

Some of the participants included the IAEA, the Preparatory Commission of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organisation (CTBTO) and the Forum for Nuclear Regulatory Bodies in Africa (FNRBA).

The Conference reviewed the activities of AFCONE, including the implementation of its programme of work and its budget.

It also deliberated on the operational status of the AFCONE Secretariat established by AU, which is based in South Africa.

The African Nuclear-Weapon-Free Zone Treaty (Treaty of Pelindaba) was adopted at the 31st Ordinary Session of the Organisation of African Unity (OAU), held in Addis Ababa between June 26 and June 28, 1995.

It was signed in Cairo on April 11, 1996.

The Treaty however entered into force on July 15, 2009.

Currently, there are 38 States Parties to the Treaty of Pelindaba, including Algeria, Benin, Botswana, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Cameroon, Chad, Côte d’Ivoire, Comoros, Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Ethiopia, Gabon, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea-Bissau, Guinea and Kenya.

Others are Libya, Lesotho, Madagascar, Mali, Malawi, Mozambique, Mauritania, Mauritius, Namibia, Nigeria, Rwanda, the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic, Senegal, South Africa, Swaziland, Tanzania, Togo, Tunisia, Zambia and Zimbabwe.

Available information obtained shows that Angola, Central African Republic, Cape Verde, Djibouti, Democratic Republic of Congo, Egypt, Eritrea, Liberia, Morocco, Niger, Seychelles, Sierra Leone, Somalia, Sao Tome & Principe, Sudan and Uganda had signed but have yet to ratify the Treaty.

The Treaty requires States Parties to renounce nuclear explosive devices, particularly to refrain from conducting research, developing, manufacturing and stockpiling.

So far, South Africa is the most advanced African country in nuclear technology, with Algeria and Egypt following.

Shooting stars of Ibadan forward Femi Ojo is happy with his scoring form after he registered his second consecutive goal in the Nigeria National league (NNL) against Remo Stars on Saturday.

The player was at his best last week for 3SC as his goal helped the Oluyole Warriors to a 1-1 draw against Unicem Rovers in Calabar.

He followed up that performance with the first goal for 3SC against Remo Stars in Ibadan in the 26th minute while olukokun doubled the lead in the 47th minute to make it 2-0.

Remo Stars themselves are a very formidable team as they only missed promotion to the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) on the last day of the season but found it hard against promotion chasing Showing Stars who now has 30 points from 17 games courtesy of the 2-0 win.

“I am very happy to have opened my goals account in the league last week against Unicem and to score again today against Remo just makes me more proud.

“I thank God for everything but the most important thing for me is to see 3SC back in the NPFL competing with the big boys,” he told FCNaija.com after the game.

3SC will continue their quest for promotion when they travel to Lagos next week to face City of David (COD) in the week 18 fixture of the NNL.

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) said on Saturday that it had no immediate plans to increase the cost of registration forms for its Computer-Based Tests.
The Public Relations Officer of JAMB, Mr Fabian Benjamin, who made the statement in an interview in Lagos, said that the board intended to work within its available resources for subsequent CBTs.
“If there is the need to increase, parents would be informed on why there is an increase,” he said.
Benjamin spoke against the backdrop of reported plans by the board to increase the cost of the forms.
He said that this year’s Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination was capital intensive because of the Paper-Pencil and Computer-Based Test that were held this year.
“The examination this year was capital intensive but subsequently it will not be so.
“The reason was that two types of examinations were held this year without any increase in budgetary allocation for exams.

“Subsequently, the cost of printing of papers for 23 subjects of 15 pages for about two million people will no longer be there.”
According to him, the Federal Government had assisted in reducing the financial burden of the exam on parents and guardians by directing JAMB to reduce the cost of forms from N4,600 to N4,000.
“The objective of the CBT is to make our education system more effective, to give the candidates the right orientation about examination, which should transcend to the university level.

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) have accused their major sponsors, Globacom Nigeria Limited, of backtracking on their contractual terms by refusing to remit nearly two years of sponsorship fee.

A top member of the football family ExCo, who
does not want his name in print, said the Nigerian
company had paid only half of the actual annual
sponsorship fee of N350 million (over $2m), while
it has not paid anything whatsoever this year; as
it continues using the national team to promote its product.

“In a World Cup year, we need all the monies we can muster but Globacom have not been forthcoming and the always use our national teams to promote their products and refuse to pay the owners of the properties, that is unfair and we are compelled to go to the press over this matter,” the official disclosed angrily. Were it not for the Federal Government and other sponsors, the Super Eagles major sponsors would have derailed NFF’s plans for Brazil 2014, added the anonymous official- while also intimating the company has failed to respond to several letters it sent to them.
“We cannot go begging every time when we know that it’s our due and they have been benefiting. If it continues like this we may have to renew our relationship with Glo,” the official said.

The National Union of Electricity Employees (NUEE) has said it would not accept the proposed increase in electricity tariff.

The union said Friday that the planned tariff increase would only compound the hardship Nigerians were going through in the midst of erratic power supply.
General Secretary of the union, Mr Joe Ajeero, stated this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja.
“The union stand is very clear on this; we shall stand to reject any hike in the electricity tariff.
“We told them when they were privatising this sector that they will add to the burden of the people, but they insisted and have their way by force.

“I am glad that other unions are now joining us to reject this planned submission against the poor and vulnerable Nigerians.”

The Borno State Government has announced the murder of the Emir of Gwoza, Alhaji Idrissa Timta, by gunmen believed to be members of the Boko Haram militant sect.

A statement signed by Ambassador Baba Ahmed Jidda, the

Secretary to the State Government (SSG), said the emir was killed at about 9am today along Tashan Alade on the way to Biu town, headquarters of Biu Lo‎cal Government Area in Southern Borno.

He was in the company of the Emir of Askira, Alhaji Abdullahi Ibn Muhammadu Askirama and Emir of Uba, Alhaji Ali Ibn Ismaila Mamza, on their way to the funeral in Gombe today of the late Emir of Gombe. The emirs had elected to drive in the same vehicle to Biu to pick up the Emir of Biu to travel with them.

The SSG gave the sequence of events as follows: “The late Emir of Gwoza had visited his counterpart, the Emir of Uba ‎yesterday and passed the night in Uba ahead of their planned trip today. The two Emirs were this morning, joined by the Emir of Askira. The three drove in the same vehicle with the intention of going to Biu to be joined by their counterpart in Biu. Unfortunately as they were driving in convoy to Biu, they were ambushed by gun men around Tashan Alade, soon after passing Garkida. The gunmen came after the convoy, specifically targeted the vehicle conveying the three Emirs and opened fire. The Emir of Gwoza was unfortunately killed by the attackers while the Emirs of Askira and Uba escaped unhurt. A policeman in the convoy was shot by the attackers but he survived the attack.”

He described Alhaji Timta, a first class emir following his recent elevation by Governor Kashim Shettima, as a great man who worked very hard to promote peace and progress in Gwoza.

“He was a pillar and one of the rallying points in Borno State,” the statement said, adding that he has visibly worked very hard in the search for peace in Gwoza since the insurgency began.

“Borno State Government is terribly shocked by this incident,” the SSG said. “The Government prays that Allah admits the late Emir into aljanna Firadaus and give family, members of the Gwoza Emirate Council, ‎the people of Gwoza, the State Council of Chiefs and the entire people of Borno State the fortitude to bear this very traumatic loss especially at a time the State is still dealing with equally disturbing issues related with security challenges in the State.”

He prayed for accelerated and lasting peace in Borno State and the rest of Nigeria.

Like most students, I have always admired you. From the very first day I saw and heard you speak, I have since then even until now reserved for you good judgments contrary to the very bad ones spreading like wildfire. As much as I would have loved to sound obscene in this piece of mine, I choose to maintain some decorum instead, as this is very much required at this point in time. Cutting all craps and going straight to the point, avoiding every form of side attractions and putting on hold every form of sentiments I might have had and may still have for you, I consider it sad, absurd and utterly inadequate the reasons you gave as regard the outrageous and unfair increment in the school fees, save some few.

Just to let you know sir, I am writing this letter based on what is known, obvious and crystal clear from reliable and confirmed sources – such as the press, distinguished members of the student’s union and their likes. I have been disappointed so far on how you have not been able to sustain at least a particular reason for your action. The reasons so far have become chameleonic in nature, changing with seasons and interviews that suites its purpose. First, it was that our fees are ridiculous because of how cheap they were, then onto the university being underfunded; the most recent reason, the one blaming the increment on the high inflation rate didn’t even make any attempt to drive the nail in. Please sir, kindly make up your mind and carry us along with the real motive(s) behind the sudden increment in the school fees. The next set of reason(s) I await, as I am sure can be reasoned out if weighed properly.

I am not against an increment in school fees, as long as it is proper, rational and realistic. The absurdness and percentage of the increase is nothing to write home about. The heat of whatever the management is facing should not and cannot be taken out on innocent students who fought their way through the tough admission process.

That is why it is called a federal university dutifully under a federal ministry of education. I believe strongly that anything whatsoever pertaining to the running and management of the university should be taken out on the ministry, not on the students who can barely afford a credible accommodation, one of human basic needs, in an academic year.
