What's New Here?

The governor of Rivers State, Rotimi Amaechi has challenged Nigerians to make sure that they stone their corrupt leaders if they want to stop graft. Will this not lead to anarchy, asks SINA FADARE.

The governor of River State, Rotimi Amaechi recently challenged Nigerian populace about their docility towards corrupt politicians and public office holders who stole their money, saying if the public have been pestering them with stones on the highway, they may have learnt their lessons in the hard way and will no longer dip their hands into the public coffers.

According to the governor, “if you see a thief and you allow him to be stealing, what have you done? You have stoned nobody; that is why we are stealing. Who have you stoned? They came out and started dancing oil subsidy, oil subsidy. They told you that they stole N2.3 trillion, what did you do?

The governor further said: “You’ve heard that $50 billion is missing and you have done nothing about it. In some countries people will go on the streets until they return that money. It is N8 trillion and it can change Nigeria.”

However, as logical as Amaechi’s theory of self help was, there is a political school of thought that believes that such should not be allowed to happen in our political space otherwise the country would be heading to anarchy.

With the amount of money that have been siphoned by public officials including the governors in the past, one may be tempted to toe the line of Amaechi, but the question on the lip of average Nigerians is that who will pronounce them guilty when the system is rotten, including the judiciary which ought to be the last hope of the common man.

According to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, some of the past governors who were indicted for corruption include former Governors Orji Uzor Kalu (Kalu); Boni Haruna (Adamawa); Ayo Fayose (Ekiti); Chimaroke Nnamani (Enugu); Saminu Turaki (Jigawa); Abdullahi Adamu (Nasarawa); Joshua Dariye (Plateau) Diepreye Alamieyeseigha (Bayelsa); James Ibori (Delta) and Gbenga Daniel (Ogun).

Could it be that Amaechi, who was once a power broker decided to make such a suggestion out of the political frustration he is facing? Could it be that the institution of governance in the country is so tainted to the extent that only the people’s revolts can stop it?

Whichever way one thinks about it, it is obvious that the country is facing fundamental challenges foisted on her by the political elites who have turned our common patrimony into a personal belonging and taking it away with such an arrogant and impunity.

Reacting to Ameachi’s statement, the Publicity Secretary of Afenifere, Comrade Yinka Odumakin noted that the governor was one of the looters of public treasury, therefore if he is now asking that they should be stoned, it will come to reality not too long a future.

His words: “For he (Amaechi) to be blaming us, when we expressed our grievances on oil subsidy; that we are only dancing instead of throwing stones, there was an insinuation that he actually bank rolled the operation of the soldiers who came and disrupted that rally at Ojota. Now that he has fallen out of the power equation and insulting us that we have not done enough. What we did then was why the price of petroleum has not been increased further. If it is stoning that they prefer, then they will get it someday.”

Speaking in the same vein, the former presidential candidate of the National Action Council, NAC, Dr Olapade Agoro said that Amaechi is only exhibiting his political frustration, adding that such a pronouncement was an invitation to anarchy.

He said: “The pronouncement by the governor of Rivers state that public officials who are found guilty of corruption should be stoned, sound logical. But it is inciting to violence which is capable of causing conflagration. How do you judge who is corrupt? It is not for anybody to take the law into his or her hands.

“If you want to take the law into your hands, all your cards must be on the table. The case of Bode George is a typical example. He was convicted by a High court and the conviction was confirmed by the Court of Appeal, only to be turned down by the Supreme Court. What could have happened if Bode George had been stoned to death?

“Amaechi was taking out of the defeat of the moment. I agree that majority of public officials in the country are corrupt; what about the case of Nasir El-Rufai who was indicted for corruption and the court freed him. I will still say that the rule of law in any democracy is the best thing anybody can have. If you remove the rule of law from democracy you have anarchy. Despite the challenges we are facing in our judiciary, l do not think we should result to jungle justice.”

However, another political school argued that after all, Amaechi may be right in the sense that instead of the society embracing all the public treasury looters and give them traditional titles, they should be ostracised and stoned in the public to let them realise that they are not wanted.

They premised their position on the fact that immediately a section of the society is condemning such an ugly act of the past, some people quickly put sentiment and political colouration into action and the next thing you see is a placard supporting those thieves who have looted public treasury.

Perhaps more worrisome and pathetic aspect of the whole episode is the fact that the institution that is saddled to put the record straight, the judiciary is equally tainted with corruption to the extent that victory is for the highest bidder.

Against this backdrop, Agoro argued that the issue at stake is beyond individuals, but rather that of an institution. “I can tell you authoritatively that 99 per cent of the public officials in the country are corrupt. In fact we eat, drink and sleep with corruption; therefore the common man who is at the receiving end is hopeless and helpless,” he said.

This line of argument tallies with that of human right activist, Bamidele Aturu, who pointed out that it is difficult for the common man to have access to those who stole their wealth because of intimidating retinue of security.

“Amaechi might have said what he said out of the political persecution he is facing. It is true that the people should stop the wanton corruption that is going in public offices. Clearly whom do we stone? For somebody that goes about in the convoys of about 20 cars with tight security almost every day, how do you pester stone on such a person?” Aturu asked.

According to him, it is not out of place that the people must put their destiny into their hands in order to put a stop to all those who are daily siphoning their wealth with impunity.

He said: “The point is that people must kick against corruption and save the country from abyss. The question is how many people did Amaechi prosecute on corruption in his state? We have the criminal code which is applicable in River. When people have political problems, they should not expect the people to do the battle for them. He has made a valid point that we need to fight people who are corrupt. We need to examine whether he is also fighting corruption.”

Political pundits are of the view that as long as the people are docile and allow those who have looted the public treasury to go free in the society, all will pay for it in the long run.

To Comrade Mark Adebayo, the Publicity Secretary of KOWA party, Amaechi is a product of corruption; therefore he cannot run away from the wrath of the society when his cup overflows.

His words: “I think we are too soft on looters in this country and their collaborators including Governor Amaechi. They flaunt their stolen wealth at our faces and all we do is grumble. Nigerians must develop the courage to destroy the corrupt political clique through organised mass action.”

He pointed out that the day of reckoning is fast approaching for all those that have looted the public treasury and they will not have any hidden place, no matter the level of their ill gotten wealth and influence.

But the question begging for answer is: Is the Amaechi antidote the panacea to corruption, which has become endemic and placed the country in the top ladder of corruption index of the corruption watchdog, Transparency International?

For someone covered from head to toe in nearly 7,000 metallic piercings, one extra ring might not be anything particularly special.

However, this ring in Elaine Davidson’s collection may become her favourite, as the world’s most pierced woman has just got married.
The 42-year-old lady tied the knot in Edinburgh, accompanied to a registry office in the Scottish capital wearing a white gown as well as pink and flowers around her hair.
Mrs. Davidson for this special occasion naturally kept her trademark piercings all in place, along with green, yellow and blue paint markings on her face.

The newly-made husband, Douglas Watson, with no piercings detected, was wearing for the ceremony a dark blue suit with a blue shirt and tie.
The Brazilian-born former nurse first broke the record for most piercings in May 2000, when a Guinness World Records official examined her and found 462 piercings on her body, including 192 on her face.
The woman used to say she never removes the rings and studs, which she estimates weigh a total of around three kilos.
Moreover, she insists there is no pain involved in the piercing, and that she sleeps every night with every piercing still in place.
Still, later, in 2009 she confessed  like being pieced and suffers for her art.
The woman said she really wanted to beat the record.

Rebels in South Sudan have recaptured the key town of Bor after fierce fighting with government forces.
The rebels as well as the UN have confirmed that the capital of Jonglei state, which lies 200km north of Juba, was retaken by the rebels on Tuesday.
“Bor is under our control … we are now in Bor town,” rebel spokesman Moses Ruai said.
The rebels have been battling their way to the centre of the strategically important town starting at dawn of Tuesday, according to Al Jazeera’s Mohammed Adow.
Only last week, government troops captured Bor from the rebel forces after over two weeks of fighting.
In recent days thousands have fled Bor fearing an impending counterattack by rebels.

It was not immediately clear who was fighting in Bor, and whether it involved mutinous soldiers, who first seized the town and held it for a week before being driven out, or a loose militia force reported to have been marching on the town for days.
The South Sudanese government said on Tuesday they will send a delegation to Ethiopia for peace talks and the Ethiopian government said rebel leader Riek Machar would also send a team to the talks in its capital, Addis Ababa.
“We are going there,” South Sudan Foreign Minister Barnaba Marial Benjamin told Reuters.
Benjamin also said President Salva Kiir will not share power with Machar because he had launched a coup against the country’s leader.
On Tuesday the African Union threatened targeted sanctions against those inciting the violence in South Sudan and hampering international efforts to negotiate an end to the two-week outburst of fighting that risks drawing in the wider region.
Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni said on Monday east African nations had agreed to move in and defeat rebel leader Machar if he rejected a government ceasefire offer.
The violence first erupted on December 15 when fighting broke out among a group of soldiers in the capital, Juba, but quickly spread to more than half the country.
The conflict has left more than 1,000 dead in the past two weeks and displace over 180,000 people. [AlJazeera]

Scientist at the Gladstone Institutes have identified the precise chain of molecular events in the human body that drives the death of most of the immune system’s CD4 T cells as an HIV infection leads to AIDS.
“Gladstone has showed how the body’s own immune response to HIV causes CD4 T cell death via a pathway triggering inflammation, and secondly by identifying the host DNA sensor that detects the viral DNA and triggers this death response,” said Dr. Robert F.
Further, they have identified an existing anti-inflammatory drug that in laboratory tests blocks the death of these cells — and now are planning a Phase 2 clinical trial to determine if this drug or a similar drug can prevent HIV-infected people from developing AIDS.
Two separate journal articles, published simultaneously in Nature and Science, detail the research from the laboratory of Dr. Warner C. Greene, who directs virology and immunology research at Gladstone, an independent biomedical-research nonprofit.
His lab’s Science paper reveals how, during an HIV infection, a protein known as IFI16 senses fragments of HIV DNA in abortively infected immune cells. This triggers the activation of the human enzyme caspase-1 and leads to pyroptosis, a fiery and highly inflammatory form of cell death.
As revealed in Nature, this repetitive cycle of abortive infection, cell death, inflammation and recruitment of additional CD4 T cells to the infection “hot zone” ultimately destroys the immune system and causes AIDS.
Siliciano, a professor of medicine at Johns Hopkins University, and a Howard Hughes Medical Institute investigator. “This one-two punch of discoveries underscores the critical value of basic science — by uncovering the major cause of CD4 T cell depletion in AIDS, Dr. Greene’s lab has been able to identify a potential new therapy for blocking the disease’s progression and improving on current antiretroviral medications.”

PRIMATE THEOPHILUS OLABAYO
As Nigerians prepare to usher in the year 2014 in two days’ time, the founder of the Evangelical Church of Yahweh, Primate Theophilus Olabayo, as part of his predictions for the New Year, has warned that Osun State governor, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola risks being kidnapped.
Olabayo made this known at his church headquarters in Lagos Suday, just as he added that aside risking being kidnapped, the governor could also be killed by his abductors.
According to him, “Governor Rauf
Aregbesola of Osun State has to be watchful so that they will not kidnap and kill him in the New Year. He has to be very careful so that he can survive the year”.
Speaking further, the cleric stated that President Goodluck Jonathan’s administration would not extend beyond 2015, even as he warned that the 2015 general elections might not hold.
He added that the North would also have the opportunity to produce the next president.
“Come 2015, they will not allow President Jonathan to rule because power is going back to the North, if at all there would be elections.
“We have to pray as a people so that there will be election in 2015. If the situation gets worse, there may not be election in 2015”, he stressed.
Moving away from the political scene, Olabayo revealed that some of the old traditional rulers in the country would die. “In the New Year, some of the old traditional rulers will go because they will meet their ancestors”, he said.
In this interview called from Sunday Tribune, Primate Theophilus Olabayo reveals his predictions for 2014 to the nation.
In the New Year, some of the old monarchs would go because they would meet their ancestors. Alhaji Usman Shehu Shagari should pray so that he can survive the New Year. Also the year will witness one of the greatest floods of our time and there will be mass killings, accidents both on the road and in the air. 2014 is a year that we need to be very prayerful because there is going to be epidemics all over the country, while there will be famine as the prices of food items would go up beyond the reach of the poor.
Governors of APC states have to be vigilant as attempts would be made to make these states, especially in the South-West ungovernable and all efforts would be made to take over Osun, Ondo, Oyo, Ogun, Edo and Ekiti states.

This is definitely 'unconventional' because the Head of the Catholic Church mostly wears his Papal regalia, regardless Esquire Magazine has named him their Best Dressed Man of 2013.

The magazine said he was picked because of his humility and his simple manner of dressing, which has 'signaled a new era and for many, renewed hope for the Catholic Church'

Governor Adams Oshiomhole of Edo State, is currently battling for survival after a horrible auto crash which his aides noted that is not serious.

Some sources within Government House claim that the governor was flown to London to get treatment in an undisclosed hospital.
According to the reliable sources, contrary to the facts stated by his media aide, Kassim Afegbua, that all was well with the governor; in reality he sustained serious injuries on his head as well as pains in his heart.
It has been gathered that Mr. Oshiomhole was first attended to in the government house by his doctor of physiotherapist and medical doctor, but he never responded well to immediate treatment, hence he was promptly flown out in secret.
Journalists have been making frantic effort to get the true story after it was broken exclusively yesterday by a London based media, Elombah.com, but they have made no headway.
A source who spoke to the Paradigm correspondents queried why the government is scared of showing the world the pictures of the car which carried the governor on that fateful day if the car was not badly hit.
When The Paradigm contacted another official source within the government house, it said the governor was hurriedly flown to the United State in a chartered air ambulance. However, the source preferred to remain anonymous.

Though a shopping trip can end up costing an arm and a leg, this Home Depot customer probably didn’t expect to put his b*tt in harm’s way, too.
On Thursday, a man at the store in Brighton, Mich., reached for his wallet and accidentally grabbed his gun, according to the Daily Press and Argus. The .40-caliber Glock went off, and the 32-year-old ended up shooting himself in the rear end.
The Green Oak Township man was not named. He was treated for minor injuries at a nearby hospital, according to WHMI-FM.
He had a concealed pistol license, and no charges were expected to be filed, the local radio station reports.
The unfortunate shopper is not the first to hit bottom in public. A man attending a showing of “The Bourne Legacy” in Sparks, Nev., last year shot himself in the keisterwhen his gun fell out of his pocket and dropped on the ground.
And at rival home improvement store Lowe’s in Williamsport, Pa., last year, a woman was shot in the leg from inside her purse – even though she wasn’t carrying a gun. She was treated for minor injuries after a bullet exploded in her bag and she was “shot” by the bullet casing.

During a robbery over the weekend in Central Park, a mugger was so disappointed with his victim’s flip phone that he handed it back.
Two gun-toting robbers held up 25-year-old Kevin Cook and his friend, and got away with a briefcase, a cellphone, and a wallet containing $114 in cash.
However, Cook was able to keep his flip phone.
“Once he saw my phone, he looked at it like, ‘What the [expletive] is this?’ and gave it back to me,” Cook said. “It’s like a 3-year-old generation Windows phone. I guess he didn’t think he could get anything for it. It’s kind of humorous.”
After the mugger handed back the phone, Cook put it to good use.
“He handed it back to me and a minute later I was able to call 911 and get the whole thing started,” Cook said. “It’s like, finally a pro for having something out of date.”
Police are still on the lookout for the two robbers.

A student is facing the death sentence after hanging two prostitutes, having their bodies shipped home and then having s*x with their corpses.
And that wasn’t the end of his sick fantasies, he then dismembered the bodies and buried them in his garden.
The 23-year-old, known as Lee, was studying design at Jilin University in Changchun, China, at the time.
He reportedly told police he was failing classes so he needed something to take his mind off it.
Lee also admitted having necrophiliac fantasies before the incidents.
According to iFeng.com, and cited in the Daily Mail, Lee hired a 20-year-old prostitute called Cai over the internet in March this year.
He then reportedly hanged her before shipping her back to his home in Changping, where he had s*x with her corpse.
Later that same month he did the same again with another prostitute.
He dismembered both and buried them in his garden.
The Second Intermediate People’s Court found him guilty of intentional homicide and sentenced him to death, the Daily Mail reports.
It also ordered him to pay 80,000 yuan (£8,000) in compensation to the victims’ families

Nick, 37, said she gave him a cheeky look as she left and regrets not talking to her.
In the ad “Missed Connection”, he wrote: “Are you about 5ft 5in blonde, with a beautiful smile – drinking with another taller female friend and about six guys (from work by looks of it)?
“You looked at me (6ft 2in, fair haired, blue shirt) as you left. Please get in touch – you looked lovely.
I am not crazy   just a hopeless romantic.”
Nick, who did not want to give his surname, said he saw the girl at All Bar One in Brighton, East Sussex, on December 13 at 10.30pm.
He added: “I asked her to email me and I’ve not heard from her yet. But she didn’t have a ring on her left hand, so fingers crossed!
“She was stunning. She had a beautiful smile and we exchanged a few cheeky looks from across the bar.
“The reason I didn’t go over and chat to her was because she was in quite a large party and I thought it would have been inappropriate.
“She was with a female friend and about six guys, it looked like she was on a Christmas work do.
“Under different circumstances it could have been a lot different and I would have loved to have gone over to her for a chat.”

President of the Nigeria Olympic Commission (NOC) Engr. Sani Ndanusa has described year 2013 as a year of reshaping and re-engineering of the Nigerian sports sector.
Following Nigeria’s dismal performance at the London 2012 Olympic, where the nation failed to grace the podium, Ndanusa believes 2014 would be a better year for the nation’s sports as athletes have been tasked to justify the efforts of the National Sports Commission (NSC) towards reviving the culture of adequate preparation for championships.
“I must say that 2013 has been a year of reshaping and what I will call re-engineering of the entire sports sector in Nigeria and definitely you cannot say that without giving kudos to the Sports Minister, Hon Bolaji Abdullahi and the entire team of the National Sports Commission ( NSC) because we came out from a very difficult 2012 where our Olympic outing was not good,” the NOC boss to Sports Vanguard in a recent interview in Yenagoa.
“I am glad that we are using that as an experience because you learn from winning and you also learn from failure. So this is the first time that we are having this kind of experience. It is gingering us to now come up with another way of doing things. Really, it has not been business as usual.
“The most important one is of course, the realisation that Olympic Games is a world class championship. Globally, it is the highest and for you to pick any medal there, it means that you are the best in the world and we are talking about competing among 209 countries in the world that have structures on ground, that have a lot of funding.”
The Federal Government has proposed to spend N5.546 billion on the nation’s sport sector in the year 2014. If the National Assembly passes the Appropriation Bill into law, the commission is expected to use N100 million for the maintenance of high performance centre- a project which will be supervised by the newly appointed foreign coaches- among many other proposals.

A woman finds herself in debt after taken out $5,000 in loans to buy her children Christmas presents.
Many families begin the New Year with financial strain after a month of gift-giving. For Katie McGill, 28, the pressure gauge is reading higher than most.
McGill borrowed about $2,780, from easy money lending firms to purchase “hundreds” of Christmas gifts for her children. The unemployed mother of two faces a debt of almost $5,000 to start paying back Jan. 2.
She is blaming the lending companies for what she sees as predatory practices.
“It’s stupid because I’m on benefit and there’s no way I can afford to pay it all back,” she told the Mirror.
“When I first started taking out loans I was in a stable relationship and me and my partner both had jobs, meaning when it came to pay day we could pay back what we owed.”
“But now I am on my own and unemployed. [Lending company] Wonga haven’t looked into my change of circumstances though and they’re still allowing me to borrow.”
McGill’s gifts to Mya-Renee, three, and Calvin, eight, included a bike, TV, and DVD player for both kids, several Xbox games, and a meal out.
“There were hundreds of presents under the tree. Their gran passed away this year so it was nice to be able to treat them,” the single mother told the Daily Mail.
Now, though, McGill isn’t sure how she’ll cover repaying the multiple loans that she took out from eight different companies.
“When I start paying back the loans I won’t be able to pay the bills or buy food and drink and basic necessities,” she said.
She called the loans from the company Wonga “one big, messy, circle,” as the company encourages loan seekers to continue to take out more loans to account for the last ones.  A spokesman for Wonga said it’s only possible to take out one loan at a time.
McGill has no job and is using unemployment benefits to provide for her household, and now, pay off thousands in Christmas presents for the kids.

Chelsea FC boss Jose Mourinho believes Liverpool striker Luis Suarez should have been booked for simulation in Sunday evening’s 2-1 win over the Merseyside outfit at Stamford Bridge.
The Uruguay international was chasing Spaniard Cesar Azpilicueta when he fell down in the Chelsea area after appearing to be caught by a Samuel Eto’O challenge.
“It is not a tackle. Suarez lost the duel with Azpilicueta, who has the ball and is leaving the box,” said Mourinho.
“Now he is doing an acrobatic swimming pool jump to try to get a penalty.”
Its Obvious the Ball Wasn’t With Suarez at the Point of Contact But, ‘Is This a Dive?’

The incident occurred in the closing stages of the match with the hosts leading 2-1, after Eden Hazard equalised Martin Skrtel’s opener before Eto’O placed the Blues in the ascendancy.
“He is so clever because he also knows he is in the area with the Liverpool supporters behind him.
“But [referee Howard] Webb is 10 metres away and I think the only mistake he did was not to give him a yellow card,” added Mourinho.
“I am always happy when I see him [Suarez] play because I love his quality, his commitment, his ambition to win. He is absolutely a fantastic player.
“But this country is a special country. I’m not English or British but I feel I have also responsibility in defending some values in this football.
“One of the things that we have good is that we don’t like people with simulations.
“This situation in the box with Azpilicueta and Eto’o, stop with this or give him a yellow card because it is not good for our game.”

Mourinho Accuses Suarez of Diving.

Suarez has scored 19 goals in 14 games for the Reds this season, despite missing six of the Anfield clubs’ games at the start of the 2013/14 campaign as part of his ten-match ban punishment for biting Branislav Ivanovic during a game last season.
He also received a seven-match ban when he was at Ajax for biting PSV Eindhoven midfielder Otman bakkal’s shoulder during a match between both sides.
Suarez was the subject of a racial abuse targeted at Manchester United defender Patrice Evra in December 2011, which resulted to an eight-match ban for the 26-year-old following the Football Association’s verdict.
Mourinho continued: “The player is amazing. He is a very nice boy, I know him from his time at Ajax.
“He does everything to win. [Liverpool manager] Brendan Rodgers is doing fantastic job with him because he has changed. There is no doubt he has changed.
“But when the situation is like this and you are losing comes the nature of the player. The wild nature of the player or the cultural nature of the player.
“And culturally people from that area, they like it. But it is not only that area. There is also a corner in Europe that I belong to where they also like (gesticulates diving).”
