As Nigeria celebrates her 53rd independence anniversary on Tuesday, the Northern States Governors Forum, NSGF, has pleaded with Nigerians to exercise patience with their leaders as they strive to transform the country, assuring them that the nation will overcome the myriad of challenges currently confronting it.
The Chairman of the forum and Niger State Governor, Dr. Babangida Aliyu, made the call in an independence anniversary message signed by his chief press secretary, Danladi Ndayebo.

He said the country may not have fared well in all the critical sectors of the economy, but has nevertheless made remarkable strides, especially in its steady march to freedom and respect for the rule of law.

The Forum said, “Daunting as our security and developmental challenges may appear, we are confident that the nation will emerge from this trying time stronger, more united and more prosperous”.

It urged citizens to live above sectional tendencies which could only compromise the growth of the nation.

The statement further tasked Nigerians on the need to imbibe the spirit of selflessness which the nation’s founding fathers preached and practiced.

“Nigeria will only attain lofty height if citizens are prepared to makes sacrifices,” the statement added, urging Nigerians to drop the dangerous mindsets, prejudices and biases that have held the nation down for a long time.

•Firms up security around malls, beaches, others

Inspector General of Police, IG, Mohammed Abubakar, has ordered the immediate deployment of policemen in and around shopping Malls, public parks and beaches across the country.

This followed intelligence reports about plot by some gangs to attack public places and critical national infrastructure ahead of tomorrow’s Independence anniversary celebration.

Policemen are also to be deployed in all highways in the federation, a move intelligence sources said was meant to forestall coordinated attacks in some parts of the country.

Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Frank Mba, said in a statement made available to journalists in Abuja yesterday that the IG had specifically directed all Zonal Assistant Inspectors- General of Police, Command Commissioners, including the Maritime Command to ensure adequate and effective deployment of all operational tools and manpower within their commands.

Mba described the move as part of deliberate and comprehensive efforts by the Force to ensure a hitchfree Independence Day anniversary celebration, adding that the IG had consequently placed officers and men, as well as other special operatives, on red alert nationwide.

He said they were to pay special attention “to shopping malls, public parks and beaches, highways and other critical infrastructure and sensitive areas in order to guarantee the safety and well-being of the citizenry”.

The police assured Nigerians that they would do everything within available resources to discharge their constitutional and statutory responsibilities of providing safe and secure environment for all, particularly during the Independence anniversary.

The IG also congratulated President Goodluck Jonathan even as he saluted the courage and determination of Nigerians to build and sustain a strong, indivisible and virile nation, despite challenges confronting the country.

He, however, urged Nigerians to put their differences aside and courageously continue to support the police in the face of current security challenges confronting the country.

Abubakar urged all well-meaning persons and groups to cooperate with the police by providing useful information, especially with regards to the ongoing fight against terrorism and other forms of crimes and criminalities, for the mutual benefit and collective interest of the citizenry.

Meanwhile, the Association of Police Suppliers and Contractors has called on the Federal Government to increase its funding of the Force in the light of the growing wave of insecurity in the country.

The Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) informed it would embark on an indefinite strike from October, 4, 2013, Friday, to press home their demands.
Mr. Chibuzo Asomugha, the National Chairman of the Union, gave this indication in a chat with P.M.NEWS in the morning of September 30, 2013, Monday.

He stated clearly that the lecturers had been asked to call off the industrial action which they embarked upon early this year but the Federal Government is yet to fulfill the promises made since then.

“We are going on an indefinite strike starting from Friday, 4 October, to remind the Federal Government of the promises they made when they asked us to go back to the classrooms early this year.

“The union believes that the government has failed us in that regard because we trusted them but the conditions were not met,” ASUP chairman stated.

He added that “for these reasons, we have instructed all our member institutions to stay away from the classrooms starting from Friday as we seek a permanent solution to the looming crisis in the education sector of the country.

“We can’t be taken for a ride continuously and that’s why we want a permanent resolution to the promises which had been made.”

This recent development will come as a worry to students in the country as the ongoing strike action by the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, is nowhere near its end.

•Unsettles G-7 governors, northern leaders …as PDP, Presidency plot to dissolve more dissident party Excos
President Goodluck Jonathan’s declaration in far-away New York, that he would contest the presidential election in 2015 has been causing some ripples among the camp of the aggrieved Group of Seven Peoples Democratic Party Governors and some northern leaders who are resisting his re-nomination as the party’s standardbearer.

This is also as the leadership of the PDP is gearing towards dissolution of some state Excos of the party that are clearly loyal to the new PDP, dominated by the aggrieved governors.

A PDP source disclosed to Sunday Mirror that the National Chairman of the PDP, Alhaji Bamanga Tukur, has ordered the acting National Secretary of the PDP, Dr. Remi Akintoye, to raise a memo to be discussed at the next National Working Committee, NWC, of the party, including a list of the states in which the tenure of their exco has ended or about to end.

This, according to our source, is a prelude to appointing a caretaker committee that will be loyal to the national leadership in some of the states. “With this appointment, the party will take absolute control of these states which are controlled by the rebel governors who are supporting the new PDP.”

Targeted states include Niger, Jigawa, Kwara and Sokoto. States like Kano, Rivers and Adamawa have since been taken over by the national leadership of the party.

The presidential project of Dr. Jonathan, particularly his recent declaration of intention in the United States, has been ruffling the feathers of some members of the political elite in the North, even though it did not come to them as a surprise.

A source has it that there is already a crack within the aggrieved PDP camp over the way forward as regards their aim of stopping Jonathan from returning to power. According to the source, while some of the governors including Rabiu Kwankwaso (Kano), Rotimi Amaechi (Rivers) and Aliyu Wammako (Sokoto) appear to favour defecting to another party, particularly the Peoples Democratic Movement, PDM, Governors Sule Lamido (Jigawa) and Babangida Aliyu (Niger) will prefer staying put at the PDP.

Recall that recently, the governors voiced out the pressure by the former Vice President Atiku Abubakar’s camp to lure them into his political camp.

An aide to Governor Babangida Aliyu of Niger State who chose not to be mentioned, told ‘Sunday Mirror’ that the governor may soft-pedal from his opposition to the re-election plans of President Jonathan so long as his emergence has not contravened the party’s rule.

“His opposition all along has always been on principles and not personal. He has nothing against President Jonathan contesting the election but he is only opposed to imposition of candidacy and not allowing a free contest as it concerns the north.”

While the Abubakar Baraje-led new PDP has repeatedly told President Jonathan that he was ineligible to seek a second mandate in office, the camp of the President has continued to expand in acceptance by several groups across the nation.

The Baraje group had outlined that the 1999 Constitution, an agreement the President entered into and his open statement in Turkey in 2011 were factors that disqualified him from seeking re-election.

In a statement by its National Publicity Secretary, Chief Chukwuemeka Eze, New PDP faction also warned that Jonathan’s second term ambition was not in the best interest of the country as it may cause the disintegration prophesied by some international community.

“After reviewing the state of the nation and the pulse of Nigerians, we wish to advise President Jonathan to abandon his plan to seek re-election in 2015 as this is not in the best interest of the country,” it added.

The statement read: “We are worried that Mr. President is intent on running despite his earlier promise not to do so and in spite of the wise counsel of well-meaning Nigerians, including respected elder statesmen. Why can he not keep his words as a man of honour instead of allowing himself to be misled by selfish advisers to go back on his words, thereby overheating the polity?”

The faction called on the President to heed the advice of well-meaning personalities such as Prof. Ben Nwabueze (SAN) and Archbishop Emeritus of the Catholic Archdiocese of Lagos, Anthony Cardinal Olubunmi Okogie, all of whom had advised him to correctly read the handwriting on the wall and stay away from the 2015 presidential race. While saying that by 2015, Jonathan would have been in office for six years, it added that this was enough time for him to achieve whatever he planned for Nigeria.

It said, “What else is he looking for that is making him desperate to participate in the 2015 presidential election despite warnings that doing so may spark a chain of events capable of culminating in the country’s disintegration, thereby bringing to pass the predictions of Lord Lugard that Nigeria as a nation by 2014 may become history, which was later confirmed by the USA Think-Tank that Nigeria may disintegrate by 2015. “

However, the Presidency while replying the new PDP said that nobody or group of individuals, including the New PDP, was capable of stopping Jonathan if he decided to contest the 2015 election.

The Special Adviser to the President on Political Matters, Ahmed Gulak, said unrealisable ambition had blinded members of the New PDP to the extent that they were no longer aware that Nigeria was governed by law.

He said, “The Abubakar Baraje group (New PDP) is an outlaw as far as the law of this country is concerned. The country is governed by law. “As far as I am concerned, there is no political crisis in the country.

It is a group of few people with unrealisable ambitions that are blinded to the fact that there is a Constitution and there is the Electoral Act.”

A few days ago, former governors and candidates of the PDP unveiled the Godluck To Goodluck Project, while insisting that it would be against natural justice to deny President Goodluck Jonathan a right to seek re-election in 2015.

According to the convener of the forum and former governorship candidate of PDP in Edo State, Major Gen. Charles Arhiavbere, the team asked “all well meaning PDP members to embrace peace and to return to the mainstream of the party under the leadership of Alhaji Bamanga Tukur.”

It stated: “The constitution provides for eight years for every office and I believe that going by natural justice, if there is a tenant in a house and it is going for sale, the first opportunity of refusal should go to the occupant.

“And I believe that based on the mid-term report of the President, we believe that he should be given a second term in office to finish his project. President Jonathan has the right. It has not been published anywhere that he signed an agreement to run for one term.

He should be given support and peaceful environment to implement his projects to completion.” Present at the meeting are former Minister of Sports, Damishi Sango; Fidelis Seri; another former Minister of Sports, Col Abdulminu Aminu; former governor of Adamawa State, Boni Haruna; former deputy governor of Ogun State, Alhaji Salimot Badru; governorship candidate of PDP in Ondo State, Sola Oke; a former minister, Alhaji Dauda Birmah; Col. John David Dongi (rtd) and a retired Assistant Inspector General of Police, Donald

As the country marks its 53rd independence anniversary, professionals take a cursory look at activities in the built environment in the last one year and conclude that much still needs to be done, Maureen Azuh writes.

Stakeholders in the built environment have said that the industry has not moved forward in the last one year, despite several efforts at improvement.

Some of those who spoke with Punch correspondent said there had been efforts at tackling some of the issues that confront the industry, including housing deficit, menace of building collapse and flooding, among others, but only marginal success had been recorded.

Available statistics indicate that the country currently has a housing deficit of about 17 million units, with the tendency of the figure rising further.

In the past one year, stakeholders have focused on ways of making houses available and affordable yet, housing has remained out of the reach of ordinary Nigerians.

While some blamed the problem on insensitivity on the part of the Federal Government, others have said that the amendment of the Land Use Act will be a way out.

A former President, Nigerian Institute of Town Planners, Alhaji Waheed Kadiri, said despite the fact that stakeholders had limited their discourse to housing at the detriment of other infrastructure; there had been no progress, especially in the area of housing for the masses.

He said, “Now, if you move to where we usually focus on – housing – you can see that nothing much has been done; the rich are building for themselves houses that are out of the reach of the common man.

A lawyer, Emmanuel Ofoegbu, on September 30, 2013, challenged the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) in the Federal High Court, Lagos, on the issuance of new number plates by the agency. The applicant is seeking a declaration that the threat by the respondent to arrest and impound the vehicles of motorists who failed to acquire the new number plates from October 1, was “unconstitutional“.

The FRSC has since extended the deadline for procuring the new number plates to next year.

In his statement of facts, the applicant averred that the old number plates were issued under the provisions of the National Road Traffic Regulations (NRTR), 2004.

He said that the NRTR 2004 is a subsidiary legislation made under the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) Act, Laws of the Federation, as revised in 2004.

According to the applicant, the NRTR 2012, in Regulations 230 (2), provides that the revocation of the 2004 Regulations, shall not affect anything done, or purported to be done pursuant to that Regulation.

Mr. Ofoegbu averred that there was no law made in accordance with the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended), which prohibits the use of the old number plates, or declares its use as an offence.

He also averred that the threat by the respondent to impound vehicles and arrest motorists who failed to comply with the October 1 deadline was a gross violation of the provisions of Section 36 (12) of the constitution, which guarantees the rights of individuals.

He, therefore, wants the court to declare as unlawful, the threat by the respondent to arrest motorists using the old number plates, because there was no law validly made in accordance with the constitution, prohibiting their use.

The applicant also seeks a court injunction restraining the defendants from impounding vehicles or otherwise arresting or harassing motorists who fail to acquire the new number plates.

The suit number FHC/L/CS/ 1332/13, was yet to be assigned to a trial judge as at Monday morning.

Tempers run red-hot as Gomez admires home run, jaws with Braves first baseman Freeman, pithcer Paul Maholm and catcher Brian McCann.

Brewers’ Carlos Gomez (l.) and Braves’ Reed Johnson mix it up after a Gomez home run leads to the benches clearing.

 BREWERS 4, BRAVES 0
ATLANTA - Kyle Lohse pitched a two-hitter and the Milwaukee Brewers overcame Carlos Gomez's ejection in the first inning to beat the Atlanta Braves 4-0 on Wednesday night.

The NL East champion Braves were shut out for the second time in three nights and have been blanked 17 times, second-most in the league.

After losing three of four, Atlanta has fallen three games behind the St. Louis Cardinals for the NL's best winning percentage.

Lohse (11-10) struck out five and threw just 22 of 89 pitches for balls. In his first season with Milwaukee, Lohse was pitching for St. Louis when he had his last shutout, a 5-0 victory over Washington on April 21, 2011.

Gomez, made it 1-0 in the first with his 23rd homer, but was ejected without touching home plate during a benches-clearing argument.
Braves catcher Brian McCann (l.) walks up the third base line to speak to Gomez, who is undeterred.

Braves first baseman Freddie Freeman and reserve catcher Gerald Laird were also ejected.

Gomez stirred emotions on both teams as the game's second batter.

As soon as he homered, Gomez stood in the batter's box watching the ball sail into the seats in left field, stared at starter Paul Maholm and flipped his bat behind him.

Gomez was yelling at Maholm as he slowly trotted up the first base line, and Maholm yelled back. The argument continued as Gomez slowly trotted across first base and began arguing with Freeman.

Freeman yelled back at Gomez, who touched second and third without incident before McCann, Atlanta's catcher, stood in the third base line about 20 feet from the plate and stopped him.

The benches emptied, and it appeared Gomez was ejected for shoving Braves reserve outfielder Reed Johnson and Freeman went for charging toward Gomez and threatening him.
McCann and Gomez have a friendly chat.

Gomez never touched home plate, but the Brewers were still credited with a run.

Laird was ejected, too, but it wasn't immediately clear why.

Logan Schafer took Gomez's spot in center field. Chris Johnson took Freeman's spot at first while second baseman Dan Uggla entered the game for Atlanta and Elliott Johnson moved from second to take Johnson's spot at third.

One run was all Lohse needed. He retired 20 straight batters after Andrelton Simmons led off the first with a bunt single, and threw just 54 pitches, 42 strikes, through the first six innings.

Lohse is 10-4 with a 2.91 ERA over his last 22 starts. He pitched his 10th career complete game, allowing four hits, two starts ago in a 5-1 home victory over Cincinnati on Sept. 13.

Alhaji Mohammed Abacha, the son of the late dictator, Gen. Sani Abacha, has pleaded with Nigerians and the people of Kano State, to forget the past.

Mohammed was at the headquarters of the Peoples Democratic Party in Abuja on Monday where he declared that he had rejoined the party, which he left in 2010 for the Congress for Progressive Change.

He was a staunch member of the defunct CPC in Kano State and aspired to be its governorship candidate.

Though he was said to have won the primary, but the national leadership of the party, led by a former Head of State, Gen. Muhammad’s Buhari (retd) said there was no way the party would allow the son of the former head of state to flag the party’s flag during the election.

When Mohammed was asked whether the role played by his father in the politics of Nigeria was responsible for what befell him in CPC, he resorted into preaching.

He said, “History is for yesterday. Whatever has happened,  happened yesterday. Yesterday belongs to history and it is one of the things we have left behind.

“We must forget the past and move on. We need not to talk about it as if we can forget.”

It will be recalled that many Nigerians were either killed or imprisoned unjustly during the regime of the late general.

Some members of his family also looted the national treasury, but the Federal Government was able to recover some of the funds, majority of which was kept in foreign countries.

Mohammed is believed to be eyeing the governorship ticket of the PDP in 2015.

He, however, said he has yet to inform the Governor of the state, Alhaji Rabiu Kwakwanso about his return to the party.

But he said he had been given assurances that things would work out well in the party, which he said he left due to lack of internal democracy, during his second coming.

He said, “I did not consult the governor before returning to the party. Power belongs to God.

“We left the PDP in 2010 due to lack of internal democracy but we have had so many experiences and have come to realise that there is no other party that captures Nigeria, every tribe and religion like the PDP.”

Asked if be party had promised to give him a waiver, Mohammed said it the issue of waiver was not discussed.

The PDP constitution says a returnee to the party will have to wait for two years before he could be allowed to contest using its platform, unless he is granted waiver by either the National Working Committee of the party or its National Executive Committee.

Paul Karason, the man whose skin turned permanently blue 15 years ago, died in Washington on Monday.

Paul Karason, who became famous after his skin turned permanently blue, died at a Washington hospital Monday. He was 62.

Karason was admitted in the hospital last week after suffering a heart attack. He also had pneumonia and later suffered a severe stroke, his estranged wife, Jo Anna Karason, said Tuesday.

Karason was born a fair-skinned, freckled boy but his skin began turning blue 15 years ago after he contracted a rare medical syndrome known as argyria or silver poisoning from dietary supplements.

He was reportedly using a special silver-based preparation to treat a bad case of dermatitis. He had also been drinking colloidal silver.

Jo Anna Karason said some people started calling him “Papa Smurf” after his skin changed color. His white mane and long beard added to the resemblance.

“That was a nickname he didn’t appreciate, depending on who said it,” she said. “If it was a kid who ran up to him saying ‘Papa Smurf,’ it would put a smile on his face. But if it was an adult, well ….”

In 2008 a blue Karason emerged from reclusion and explained his condition on the TODAY show.

“He has been too ill to work for a while,” his wife said. “He didn’t like to go out in public much — only when he thought he needed to, like to go to the bank or to pick up tobacco.”

Karason’s ultimate cause of death as not yet been revealed.

PRESIDENT GOODLUCK JONATHAN RINGS THE CLOSING BELL AT THE NYSE
President Goodluck Jonathan was at the famous Wall Street on Monday, September 23, 2013, where he rang the closing bell of the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) to the admiration of his supporters and indeed, a cross-section of Nigerians in view of the historic significance of the event – Mr. Jonathan is the first Nigerian president ever to be accorded this privilege. Another feat that might soon find its way into the administration’s list of achievements famously tagged “uncommon transformation agenda”.

To put it in perspective for those that do not understand why the Jonathan administration is grinning from ear to ear over this development, it is like bringing a child before his/her most idolized star; they want to jump and scream, take all the photos they can and then show-off to their friends later.

While there were praises for President Jonathan, some hard knocks also came from his friends on Facebook, who wanted to know if ringing of the closing bell of the NYSE will bring an end to the lingering ASUU strike, resolve the problem of insecurity or provide millions of unemployed Nigerian youths with jobs. Some even went as far as labeling Mr. Jonathan a “time-keeper”, among others.

Let me quote from investopedia.com on the significance of ringing the NYSE bell: “…While ringing the bell is meant as an honor, it is also a TV event, and meant to be fun and entertaining. In the 21st century, the financial markets aren’t only about investing – they’re also about entertainment.”

And this is true if you consider the fact that personalities, who have rung the NYSE bell range from prominent public figures to boardroom execs, to cartoon characters, entertainers, athletes and so and so forth.

But that is not to rule out a more significant aspect of the event because for the first time, Nigeria’s Green-White-Green flag was hoisted on the NYSE building and a Nigerian president – Goodluck Jonathan – addressed traders and the rest of the world from inside the world’s most prestigious trading floor with viewership estimated to reach hundreds of millions.

I stand to be corrected but this honour has been accorded only two public figures from the African continent – Nelson Mandela of South Africa and now, Goodluck Jonathan of Nigeria.

Little wonder then an excited Mr. Jonathan posted on his Facebook, “Today, I had the honour of ringing the closing bell at the New York Stock Exchange after I had heralded to global captains of industry Nigeria’s efforts in recent times that has made our nation a prime destination for foreign investment and one that ensures some of the highest Return on Investments (RoI) in the world. This is just the beginning of greater things to come for our country and our continent.”

This view point has been attested to by Marisa Ricciardi, Chief Executive Marketing Officer of NYSE Euronext, who said some few months ago that, “It’s a great platform (ringing the bell) to get visibility,” adding that “You can deliver a message to Wall Street, Main Street or around the world.”

But should this “honour” be rubbed in our faces? Will we not hear word again because Mr. Jonathan rang the closing bell at the NYSE? If the “loud speakers” of this rare honour had made it about national pride rather than inflating the ego of one man, it would be understandable but alas, that is not the case.

I’m even left more surprised that they have not attributed Mikel Obi’s long overdue maiden EPL goal for his club, ChelseaFC against Fulham at the weekend to the positive effects of the “uncommon transformation agenda” of the Goodluck Jonathan administration. Charlatans!

While our leaders, past and present have held an unfathomable disdain for almost everything “local”, they crave the attention of anything “international” like their lives depended on it.

From paying an American lobbying firm thousands of dollars to help arrange interviews with foreign media when our own local channels hardly ever get an exclusive interview with the man at the top to the over-zealousness of government officials to quote fanciful figures from international rating agencies to prove their bogus claims that Nigeria has never had it this good when the true picture portrays a nation direly in need of urgent resuscitation and revitalization, only points to one thing – Nigerian government officials suffer from inferiority complex.

It is that same malaise that will make Nigerian leaders appear at their best before the cameras of the CNN, Aljazeera, BBC of this world and look timid in front of their interviewer while brushing off the local journalist at home, sounding pompous and telling Nigerians point blank that they don’t “give a damn!”

It is high time our leaders begin to realize that charity begins from home and when all is said and done, they are accountable to the Nigerian people not some foreigner.

We adore and reverence our leaders; we want to own them; feel like a part of government not some leper, who is an outcast and only worthy of a view from afar. The trend by our leaders to surround themselves with sycophants and political jobbers, who isolate them from the real life struggles of ordinary Nigerians, is not the way forward.

President Goodluck Jonathan must reconnect with Nigerians, who massively voted and prayed for his victory in 2011 not minding his ethnicity and religion but are fast losing hope as his administration has been hijacked by those who don’t wish him and this country well.

How can he regain their trust? By yielding his heart and ears to the genuine cries and aspirations of the Nigerian people; firing some of his aides, especially those that have made bare-faced falsehood their stock-in-trade; conducting himself in such a manner that portrays the overall significance of the office he occupies – never before in the history of our country has the Office of the President and Commander-in-Chief of the Nigerian Armed Forces been so dragged in the mud as is currently been done and finally, he must be ready to be a President of all Nigerians not an Ijaw, South-South or Peoples’ Democratic Party, PDP President.

God bless Nigeria!

The Colleges of Education Academic Staff Union (COEASU) has given the Federal Government a 60-day ultimatum to meet its demands.
The President of the Union, Mr. Asagha Okoro, said “the nation would regret looking down on the teaching education sector if concrete steps are not taken to address COEASU’s grievances.”

In an exclusive interview with Vanguard Learning, Okoro said: “we have packaged all the issues facing the teaching education sector. If we do not see concrete action within 60 days, we will employ non conventional industrial methods to make our voice heard. What we are asking for is not much; most of these demands can be met with as little as N26bn. After a one week warning strike, the Union met with government representatives at the office of the Minister of Labour and Productivity, Emeka Wogu, last Thursday.

Outome of meeting

Okoro, speaking on the outcome of the meeting said: “We were told that our concerns were germane and will be addressed. However, the issues discussed were forwarded to the Minister of State for Education and we were told that a meeting would be scheduled with him as soon as possible.”

The union had pointed out 17 issues to be addressed by the government. They include: “the suspicious delay in the release of the 2012 visitation white paper; the refusal of colleges managements to recruit commensurate academic manpower to cater for the high dearth of academic staff to meet the contemporary challenges engendered by the rising population of students; the non-harmonization of conditions of service for academic staff of all tertiary institutions to stem brain drain from the colleges of education to the universities; the proposed selective imposition of IPPIS in the CoE and the polytechnics; the truncation of a hitherto functional and innovative Tertiary Education Trust Fund leading to obvious regrettable gaps that compromises the critical need for the consolidation of the gains recorded during the past five years; non implementation of CONPCASS, 65years retirement age and Migration to CONTISS 15 in some state CoE; the non conduct of Needs Assessment for CoE to address students and staff needs for the enhancement of quality teaching and learning.”

Others are: the refusal of government to approve an Independent degree awarding status for all CoE certified by NUC as being qualified to award degrees in Teacher Education; illegal imposition of Group Life Insurance underwriters and the non payment of death benefits to our deceased colleague’s families between 2000 and 2013; non budgetary allocations for outsourced services and the refusal of government to heed the call for the abrogation of outsourced services and the offer of regular employment to all those in the outsourced cadre and the payment of out-standing arrears to the tune of N2,443,278,543.96; the non allocation/release of funds (N2,344,765,841) for crucial academic activities like accreditation programmes, among others.

Meanwhile, in its bid to forestall another strike action by COEASU, the Minister of Labour and Productivity, Wogu, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with COEASU which charged the Federal Ministry of Education to, as a matter of urgency, meet with the Union to determine some of the issues at stake.

At the end of the Thursday meeting aimed at reassessing the extent of the implementation of the agreement reached on the 30th of August 2013 between the Ministry of Education and COEASU, the MoU states that all new issues tabled at the mediatory meeting will also be sent to the Supervising Minister of Education as they are specific administrative issues within the Sector which require tackling;

That the Federal Government appreciates the suspension of the seven days working strike embarked upon by the Union due to the intervention of the Federal Ministries of Labour and Productivity and Education on 30th August 2013;

That the Office of the Accountant General of the Federation will demonstrate the workings of the IPPIS platform to the Executive of COEASU on October 29,2013;

That in consideration of the above conciliatory meeting which is at the instance of the Minister of Labour and Productivity, the meeting shall reconvene after 60 days to consider progress made in respect of the outstanding issues now referred back to the Federal Ministry of Education.

Has 60 Days To Meet Our Demands Or Else … — COEASU

Posted by Sylvester No comments

The police in Lagos State, western Nigeria, have shut a church where a two-year old baby girl was allegedly buried alive at Egbeda.

Already, the police at Idimu Division have exhumed the body of the victim for autopsy and arrested the pastor of the church identified as Dare Ogunloye.

Sources told P.M.NEWS that the DPO, Mike Ochuko, ordered his men to exhume the corpse from the church premises for autopsy..
The incident happened at Christ Gospel Apostolic Church located at Destiny Avenue, Egbeda, close to the Palace of the traditional ruler of Egbeda kingdom, Oba Samson Balogun.

Following the incident, the monarch has called on the Lagos State Government to close down the church permanently if the allegation was true.

Oba Balogun said he was informed about the incident by his wife and it was very strange to him and the residents because his area has been peaceful.

He said he did not know that the incident happened very close to him until journalists came calling for his comments on the matter.

He said the police should thoroughly investigate the matter and bring those involved to justice.

When P.M. NEWS visited the church yesterday, a team of policemen were inside and outside the church. They used their Mazda patrol vehicle with registration number BD 36 AW to block the entrance of the church to prevent people from going in or coming out of the church.

One of the security men told our reporter that the church was temporary closed to allow the police investigate the matter.

The motive behind the burial of the baby inside the church was not clear at the time of this report as the arrested pastor and church members could not be reached for their comments.

P.M.NEWS gathered that a resident close to the church who had gone out to ease himself at about 2 a.m., last weekend, allegedly caught the pastor while burying the child in a shallow grave within the church premises.

The neighbor whose identity was not disclosed, was said to have alerted other residents. They were said to have reported their findings to policemen at Idimu Division, consequent upon which a team was drafted to the church.

The policemen dug the shallow grave where they discovered and exhumed the body of the baby girl.

Our reporter could not confirm at press time if the baby was actually buried alive as the residents claimed.

The Police Command’s Deputy Spokesman, Damasus Ozoani, confirmed the arrest of the pastor of the church in connection with the incident but declined further comments.

Meanwhile, operatives of the Homicide Section of the State Criminal Investigation Department, SCID, Yaba, Lagos, have taken over the investigation.

After his nose was damaged, then infected and deformed, this Chinese man has had a new one artificially grown on a rather unusual place.
The 22-year-old man, identified only as 'Xiaolian,' damaged his nose in a vehicle accident back in August 2012, but decided not to seek medical treatment. An infection then gradually corroded the cartilage, and, when Xiaolian finally went to see a doctor, it was too late: the surgeons were helpless.
There was no other choice left but to grow a new nose to transplant it, replacing the damaged one.
The surgeons placed a skin tissue expander onto Xiaolian's forehead, cutting in into the shape of a nose and supporting it by cartilage taken from his ribs.
The medical procedure was carried out at a hospital in Fuzhou, China's Fujian province. Surgeons say the nose is well-developed, and the replacement surgery will be carried out soon.

Previous studies have also suggested that decreases in testosterone may suppress mating efforts, potentially channeling a man’s energy toward the care of infants.

The President, Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Dr Nasir Fagge, said on Tuesday that the current strike by lecturers of public universities in the country was a sacrifice for better things to come.

Fagge told Journalists in Lagos that unless the deficits in the education sector, especially the university system, were addressed once and for all, there would be no development.
Lecturers, under the aegis of ASUU, had on June 30 embarked on what it had described as comprehensive, total and indefinite strike in public universities across the country.

The lecturers are asking for the implementation of some aspects of an agreement they jointly entered into with the Federal government in 2009.
According to Fagge, it is regrettable that the strike is protracted, and that the decision of ASUU to remain adamant until its demands are fully met can seem uncomfortable and worrisome.

Championship outfit Birmingham grabbed early second-half goals from Dan Burn, Matt Green and Tom Adeyemi to delight the home crowd at St Andrew's after their Premier League opponents had the better of the first period.

Wilfried Bony scored in injury time for Michael Laudrup's side, but it was a case of too little, too late for the visitors.

There were 10 changes from the Swansea side that beat Crystal Palace in the Premier League on Sunday, with Jonjo Shelvey the only man to keep his place as close-season recruits Alejandro Pozuelo and Bony started.

Birmingham manager Lee Clark, on the other hand, made just five alterations from the team that overcame Sheffield Wednesday 4-1 in the Championship last time out, with Jesse Lingard the most notable absentee.

The 20-year-old, who joined on a season-long loan from Manchester United last week, scored all four goals in their win at St Andrew’s on Saturday but cannot play in cup competitions due to a clause in his contract.

But despite the youngster’s absence, Birmingham created the first goalscoring opportunity of the game after 13 minutes when Chris Burke fired over the bar from the edge of the area.

However, Swansea almost took the lead just minutes later when Bony hit the bar before Pozuelo also clattered the woodwork with the follow-up.

The Premier League side then began to assert their authority on the game and the Ivory Coast international went close again shortly after, as his powerful shot was blocked in the 30th minute.

Roland Lamah was next to have an effort on goal for Laudrup’s men, but his shot was kept out by the feet of Birmingham keeper Colin Doyle as half-time drew in.

The home side came out the more energised team after the break though, and they soon created a chance as Matt Green forced Gerhard Tremmel into a great save with five minutes gone.

Their pressure soon paid off, and it was Burn who broke the deadlock as the defender netted an unmarked header in the 55th minute.

And things then went from bad to worse for Swansea just minutes later as Green met a cross from Mitch Hancox to leave Tremmel with no chance.

Laudrup then opted to make changes in an attempt to change the flow of the game, with Alvaro Vazquez and Jose Canas replacing Jonathan de Guzman and Shelvey.

But Birmingham were rampant by this point and increased their advantage when Adeyemi capitalised on a Canas error to claim the third with less than 10 minutes remaining.

Bony then headed home from a Wayne Routledge corner in the dying seconds, but this was no more than a consolation for Laudrup's side.

Manchester United ruined Luis Suarez's return to action with a 1-0 League Cup victory over Liverpool at Old Trafford on Wednesday.

The controversial striker played a prominent role in an entertaining cup tie, but Javier Hernandez's close-range finish early in the second half ensured United would move into the fourth round and avenge their defeat by the same scoreline at Anfield earlier this month.

The return of Suarez following the completion his 10-match ban for biting dominated the build-up, with the Uruguayan restored to a strong starting line-up by manager Brendan Rodgers.

United, meanwhile, made a number of alterations, with the likes of Rio Ferdinand, Nemanja Vidic and Michael Carrick excluded, though Wayne Rooney was handed the captain's armband as he started in attack.

Despite David Moyes making wholesale changes, his side undoubtedly started the match with greater fluency than their rivals, with Nani's powerful left-footed drive forcing Martin Skrtel into a block within the opening five minutes.

However, Liverpool soon fashioned a chance of their own, only for Daniel Sturridge to inexplicably leave a Steven Gerrard ball across the box seemingly in the belief that a team-mate was poised to score.

Suarez was presented with two promising opportunities soon after, but opted to shoot when he should have passed with the first before doing the opposite with his next chance as the visitors failed to find the breakthrough. And the Liverpool forward came even closer soon after, but could not catch up with a slightly loose touch from Jose Enrique's long pass, allowing David de Gea to gratefully collect at his feet.

The visitors in fact created several dangerous situations before the break but, much like United whenever they got near the opposition box, failed to find the right final pass to create a goal. But it did not take long for the deadlock to be broken in the second period.

The hosts underlined their intent as they burst forward in the opening seconds of the half, winning a corner almost immediately as Mamadou Sakho failed to clear. And, after easily escaping the attentions of Enrique in the box, Hernandez side-footed home to put United ahead.

Liverpool had arguably had the best of the game up to that point, and rallied well to create a number of good chances soon after. However, Jordan Henderson side-footed wide when he should have done better in the box, before Suarez dragged an effort wide from the edge of the area after being given a clear run through the United midfield.

Victor Moses then had the visitors' best opportunity of the match in the 70th minute, but failed to direct his diving header either side of De Gea and allowed the Spaniard to desperately palm away. And, after Shinji Kagawa's rasping effort clipped the bar on the break, Suarez matched the Japanese by doing the same with a self-won free-kick that had deflected off the head of Phil Jones in the wall, leaving De Gea with no chance.

Liverpool's search for an equaliser left a number of spaces for United to exploit, and Rooney almost made the visitors pay as he brought two brilliant saves from Simon Mignolet with a free-kick and a follow-up effort.

But neither side could find the extra goal, as United held on to take their place in the next round.

A rift that has torn students of Nigerian institutions of higher learning manifested itself at the University of Lagos when protesters organized by the Joint Campus Committee (JCC) of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) were today barred from gaining entrance into the University of Lagos.

The protesters made good on their threat to proceed with their protest today, defying the deployment of police to the institution. They began their march about 12 p.m., starting out from the bustling Ojuelegba overhead bridge in the Surulere area of Lagos, and stopping just outside the main entrance gate at the University of Lagos.

Our reporter who covered the protest stated that the police did not disrupt the protest, but that the protesters found the university’s gates shut against them. A source within UNILAG disclosed that many of the university’s students did not participate in the protest, and in fact instigated the closure of the gate to prevent the protest from drawing a crowd within the institution.

Two executive members of the Council of Faculty Presidents at UNILAG told our correspondent that they refused to join the protest because they were not privy to the planning process. “They called a meeting and we already made them understand we cannot be part of whatever NANS JCC is doing, only for them to alert us later by sms that we should join their protest coming to our school,” said a UNILAG student.

However, the coordinator of NANS in Lagos, Mr. Yaqub Eleto, said the union held a meeting with the students and the management, accusing the students of choosing to do the bidding of the university’s management.

“We understand that they are not free. They are management boys and are only acting the voice of the management. That won't stop us from carrying on with our protest,” Mr. Eleto said.

In another development, the new national President of NANS, Yinka Gbadebo, had reportedly dissociated himself from any protest held in solidarity with the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), whose members have been on a long strike. In earlier statements, Mr. Gbadebo took a stance against both ASUU and the Federal Government. However, the NANS leader has been particularly critical of ASUU, accusing the body of opposing efforts to revive student union bodies in every institution. His position has evolved to reveal increasing sympathy with the Federal Government.

Mr. Gbadebo was recently quoted as stating that the government had made a significant concession by releasing part of the funds required to revitalize education under a 2009 agreement with ASUU. He accused ASUU of failing to make any overtures to end the lingering strike and crisis.

In turn, the leader of the Lagos chapter of the JCC of NANS accused Mr. Gbadebo and other NANS leaders of “misrepresenting the students at the federal level,” adding, “we are not waiting on them for any movement.”

One student at the Yaba College of Education accused the new national student leader of being biased in favor of the Federal Government. “Gbadebo won't do anything with the JCC,” he said. “He is now a big boy and rides seven different cars. He now has a paymaster in the Federal Government,” the student added.

The JCC protesters demonstrated outside the UNILAG gate for several hours. Throughout the protest, the gate remained locked, with no one able to go in or out of the gate until the protests ended in the late afternoon.
