What's New Here?

Elder statesman and Presidential Liaison Officer in the Second Republic, Dr Tanko Yakassai, has described the anti-corruption efforts of the Muhammadu Buhari administration as a mere propaganda war. Sadly, it has won over right thinking men like Prof. Wole Soyinka, according to Yakassai.

He chided the Buhari administration for its open disdain for valid court orders urging him to obey all court orders relating to the former National Security Adviser, NSA, Col. Sambo Dasuki (retd).

Speaking with Vanguard in Abuja, Yakassai said Buhari can only be taken serious if he extends his dragnet across the inter-party divide as well as to other tiers of government.

“The Federal Government of Nigeria is only fighting Sambo Dasuki. Should the fight against corruption begin and end with Dasuki? Is he the only “corrupt” person? Till today, they have not even started his case in the court. He was granted bail twice and they refused to let him go. This is not a fight against corruption. It is a propaganda fight.

“They even convinced people like Prof. Wole Soyinka who now believes that there is a fight against corruption, but there is no such thing. Otherwise, how many people have they arrested?

“All the people that are arrested today are connected with Dasuki. No other person has been picked. What of the governors, ministers, top civil servants and local government officials? Can you fight one person and say you are fighting corruption?” he queried.

Speaking further, Yakassai traced the menace of corruption to the military, saying their incursion into politics in 1966 and 1983 only helped to teach politicians how to steal.

Two persons suspected to be agents of one of the political parties involved in the supplementary governorship election in the state were said to have been arrested by soldiers for allegedly snatching a ballot box.

The supplementary election in Bayelsa State is holding in Southern Ijaw and in 101 polling units in other parts of the state where the Dec. 5, 2015 governorship poll was cancelled due to violence.

Senior Special Assistant on Public Affairs to former President Goodluck Jonathan, Doyin Okupe in an interview with Punch Newspaper said that recent happenings like the arrest of Olisa Metuh, National Publicity Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party, is making President Buhari lose respect.
Dailynew9ja having analyzed the interview brings you the 6 reasons why Okupe made this assertion…

– With the hounding of opposition members, he is losing respect in the eyes of the international community

– According to Okupe, Buhari’s ‘selective’ probe is eroding his integrity.

– By arresting Metuh, Buhari is trying to dabble into or control the finances of the PDP, as party finances for which Metuh is being probed is not the business of the government.

– Okupe says the PDP spent billions of naira to fund its campaigns in the media just exactly the same way the APC spent theirs, so probing members of the opposition PDP based on that is eroding Buhari of his public respect.

– Okupe says since the former National Publicity Secretary of the APC, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, cannot deny that he didn’t collect money for campaigns during the last elections, therefore Olisa Metuh shouldn’t be asked the same.

– As long as the Federal Government is not asking questions on the sources of the APC’s campaign funds, the PDP shouldn’t be asked the same.

Minister of Health, Prof. Isaac Adewole, while briefing newsmen on the outbreak of the haemorrhagic fever in Abuja. Adewole advised communities to improve on their hygiene, including food hygiene and food protection practices.

“Avoid drying food in the open and along roadsides, it is also important to cover all foods to prevent rodents contamination,” he said.

According to him, the affected states are Bauchi, Nasarawa, Niger, Taraba, Kano, Rivers, Edo, Plateau, Gombe and Oyo. “The public is hereby assured that government and its partners and other stakeholders are working tirelessly to address the outbreak and bring it to timely end.”

He said the ministry had ordered for the immediate release of adequate quantities of “ribavirin”, the specific antiviral drug for Lassa fever, to the affected states for prompt treatment of cases. Adewole added that the ministry deployed rapid response teams to all affected states to assist in investigating and verifying the cases as well as tracing of contacts.
Adewole said Nigeria has the capability to diagnose Lassa fever, adding that “all the cases reported so far were confirmed by our laboratories”.

“The ministry would not impose travel restrictions as a form of control measure ‘from and to’ the areas currently affected by the outbreak,” Adewole said.

The Kano State Task Force Committee on Distribution of Petroleum Products has sealed off five filling stations found selling above the approved pump price in the night.

Chairman of the committee, Rabiu Bako, disclosed this to journalists in Kano on Friday.

According to Bako, some of the filling stations were found to be selling petrol to black marketers at 5am and at a price ranging between N110 and N130 per litre.

“This is a complete violation of the order on the government approved price of N86.50 per liter”, he said.

He said the affected filling stations would remain shut until they pay the fine imposed on them.

The chairman listed the filling stations as Misbahu Oil Jogana; Misbahu Oil Panshekara; Badum Oil; B. A. Bello located on Daura Road and Autan-Bawo in Dawakin Tofa.

He warned that the committee would not allow some unpatriotic marketers to create artificial scarcity of the commodity in order to maximise profit.

“We shall continue to embark on night operation so as to track down such unpatriotic marketers with a view to sanctioning them”, Mr. Bako said.

He said since the task force commenced operation in the last two weeks, it had distributed over nine million litres of fuel across the state.

He said the price of the commodity had, therefore, gone down even at the black market where a four-litre gallon, which used to sell at between N1, 000 and N1, 200, had now crashed to N600.

Former governor of Bauchi State, Malam Isa Yuguda has called on Nigerians to pray for President Muhammadu Buhari and be patient with him as he leads the country towards economic recovery and end to security challenges facing the nation.
“What is happening today is like when you want a deep wound to heal quickly, you need to wash it thoroughly with the necessary disinfectants and chemicals. It pains as it bleeds. But the gain is actually in the pain especially where there is an assurance that what we are doing is right. It is only a temporary pain. This is the stage we are in the country now and it calls for deep patience and understanding of all citizens,” Yuguda said in a statement issued from Abuja.

“We can discern clearly that President Buhari is trying to make things work. His clarity of purpose is as unmistakable as his sincerity. Nigerians should try to be patient. Take for example the situation in the oil sector where it has not been possible to dismantle the cartel in that sector in the past.

“Everybody has a critical role to play in the ongoing nation-building process including those who served in whatever capacity in the past. Our present political office holders need to accommodate the opinions of former public office holders for the collective benefit of the country. It is not everybody who once served that is corrupt. This mindset should change.

“On a very personal note, I did my best while in office but some misguided elements went on social media platforms to discredit me unjustly and ignorantly, accusing me of what I did not do. I leave them to Almighty Allah’s judgment. I served my people and my country to the best of my ability and conscience. I love my country. We have no other country we can call our own,” he said.

Yuguda Asks Nigerians To Pray For And Be Patient With President Buhari

Gunmen on a motorcycle have attacked a hotel in the Egyptian capital, Cairo, as tourists were boarding a bus parked outside the building, the Interior Ministry said on Thursday, adding that no one was hurt. Thursday’s attack took place outside the Three Pyramids Hotel which is situated on a road leading to the famous Giza pyramids, the ministry said in a statement carried by Associated Press news agency.

A suspect was arrested, who was part of a group of about 15 people who threw flares at the hotel’s security post, the statement said. It added that the hotel’s facade and the bus were damaged in the attack. Police were still searching for the rest of the group, the statement said. It did not identify the arrested suspect.

“The first thing they fired was flares, and then they started firing at the bus. Later they started firing birdshot at the hotel and tried to throw Molotov cocktails at the bus,” said Jaber Jabarin, an Arab Israeli citizen who was staying at the hotel and witnessed the attack.

The motive for the attack was unclear and no one immediately claimed responsibility for it. In Jerusalem, Alon Lavi, a spokesman for Israel’s Foreign Ministry, said the bus that was hit on Thursday was in use by a group of visiting Arab Israelis but that no one was inside the bus at the time of the incident and that no Israelis were hurt.

The PDP National Youth Frontier (PDPNYF) has called for the resignation of embattled national publicity secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Chief Olisa Metuh.
Mr. Metuh has been detained by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, since Tuesday over his alleged involvement in the $2.1 billion arms deal scandal rocking the Office of the former National Security Adviser, ONSA.

The PDP spokesman is alleged to have received questionable payments from the ex-NSA, Col. Sambo Dasuki (retd.) to the tune of N1.4 billion.

He, however, denies any wrongdoing, insisting that he carried out assignments for former President Goodluck Jonathan for which he was duly paid.

The PDPNYF, however, said it noted with great concern, the various allegations and charges against some PDP members that served in government, even as these allegations and charges are yet to be proven.

In a statement signed by its national coordinator, Usman Okai Austin, the body said “We are calling for the immediate resignation of Olisa Metuh from his position as National Publicity Secretary until ongoing corruption investigations by the EFCC are concluded. The PDP as the voice of Nigeria’s opposition must remain credible and untainted.

“We dissociate well-meaning and credible members of the PDP completely from any corrupt practices perpetuated by a minority while the party was in power. Not everybody in PDP is corrupt”.

“However, while we are aware that indeed an insignificant fraction of members of the PDP may have indulged in acts capable of tarnishing the integrity of our great party, we call on President Muhammadu Buhari to expand the scope of the war to include members of his own party indicted for acts of corruption. We are calling on the President to investigate some of his serving ministers and associates who have grievous allegations leveled against them”, the group said.

PDPNYF said it has resolved to ensure that any member of the PDP so convicted shall also face intra party disciplinary actions and severely sanctioned accordingly.

“As a prominent PDP youth group with a membership profile in excess of 300,000 across the zones of Nigeria, we find it difficult to understand the nature of transactions which caused there to be huge sums of cash deposits into the private bank accounts of a few party members who are not known to be government workers, contractors or administrators. Only anti-graft agencies and the courts can assist in resolving these mysteries and Nigerians are eagerly waiting.

“The PDP stands steadfastly by the ideals of the G-34 founding fathers of the party. The ‘Principle of the Rule of Law’, which was a cardinal, focus of founding fathers of the party remains sacrosanct and immutable.

“Let us however seize this opportunity to state that while the war against corruption is in the overall interest of Nigerians, it must not be used as a weapon to victimize and weaken the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP). Events of the past few weeks have shown that the fabric of democracy is threatened and the opposition is at risk of being beaten into a state of silence by a leading party that is notorious for its open contempt of our judiciary”.
.
The group said on behalf of the party, it regrets the conduct of prominent members the PDP, who have so far been implicated in acts ranging from corruption to outright theft.

“But we shall not preempt the courts by pronouncing them guilty. We strongly aver that it is only in the best interest of our great party that they step aside, handing over the reins of leadership to persons who command bigger measures of respect. Their continued stay in office shall continue to rob our great party of its integrity, honour and credibility on a daily basis. As it stands, Nigerians are watching and no serious Nigerian is currently taking our party seriously.

“Under the party’s current leadership, the party is now being represented at various levels, including the social media by some of the most funny, shady and incompetent characters. Who will take such a party seriously?

“Finally, we reiterate our commitment and loyalty to the ideals of the founding fathers of PDP and remain resolved to work for the success of the coming national convention which we are hopeful will throw up a new set of strong, vibrant, credible and selfless leaders”.

Four Palestinians have been shot dead after trying to stab Israeli soldiers in two incidents in the occupied West Bank, Israel’s military says. Three attackers were killed at Gush Etzion Junction, where similar incidents have occurred, and the fourth was killed near Hebron, the army said.

No soldiers were injured. Palestinian health officials confirmed the deaths. There has been an upsurge in violence between Israelis and Palestinians in recent months. “Three attackers, armed with knives, attempted to stab soldiers guarding the Gush Etzion junction,” an Israeli military statement said.

Palestinian media named the three as Muhanad Kawazbeh, 20, Ahmed Kawazbeh, 21, and Alaa Kawazbeh, 20, all from the village of Sair, north-east of Hebron. Shortly afterwards, a Palestinian was shot while tried to stab soldiers near Hebron, an Israeli statement said.

He was later named as Khalil Shalalda, 16, also from Sair. Twenty-two Israelis have been killed in attacks including stabbings, car rammings and shootings since 1 October. More than 140 Palestinians have been killed. More than half were said by Israel to be attackers. Others have been killed in clashes with Israeli forces.

The Lagos State chapter of the Peoples Demcoratic Party, PDP, and its All Progressives Congress, APC, counterpart have engaged in a war of words over the arrest of the former’s national publicity secretary, Olisa Metuh, by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC.
Mr. Metuh was invited by the EFCC to clear the air on some contentious issues on Tuesday and since then, has remained in custody of the anti-graft agency.

Reacting to the plight of its spokesperson, the Lagos PDP accused the governing APC on instigating the persecution of Metuh.

In a statement by its publicity secretary, Mr. Taofik Gani, the party noted that the arrest of Metuh “is only being made convenient by the issue of money allegedly involved”.

The PDP accused the APC of its resolve to “clamp down on the PDP publicity office superintended by the now arrested Metuh”.

But in a swift reaction, the APC in Lagos State described the PDP’s allegation as unfounded.

Publicity Secretary of the APC in Lagos, Mr. Joe Igbokwe said “opposition must be real opposition and not band of looters of the common patrimony. They must not be wreckers of Nigeria and not partakers in the destruction of everything we hold dear”.

“PDP can be a real opposition if it chooses to be, but you cannot give what you do not have. The APC is not stopping PDP, but it must first of all, redeem itself. PDP must re-examine itself and call a spade, a spade. The PDP needs our help”, he added.

The All Progressives Congress in Akwa Ibom State has vowed to use the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and other federal agencies to retrieve all funds allegedly looted from the state treasury by the Peoples Democratic Party in the past eight and a half years.
The State Publicity Secretary, Engr Ita Awak, who made this known while fielding questions on a radio programme Wednesday, alleged that “the money laundering, abuse of office and public trust allegations against Col. [Sambo] Dasuki, the immediate past National Security Adviser (NSA) is child’s play compared to what happened in Akwa Ibom state in the eight years regime of Akpabio”.

Awak vowed that when the APC takes over power, it will ensure that every kobo that was stolen from the state’s treasury is returned.

He assured that the party will ensure that anti-corruption agencies trace all funds that were laundered and that same are returned while those who looted the state will be arrested and punished.

The APC spokesman insisted that for eight years, local government areas were deprived of funds, adding that because of the oil boom during that period, N100 million was allocated to each local government, but that they never received the money.

“All these monies were kidnapped and the local governments have nothing to show for the allocation. If Adam were to come back, he will recognise Mbo and Uruan LGA’s because nothing has changed. The APC has come with a paradigm shift. Local government funds under the incoming government with Umana Umana as the leader will go directly to the local government “, he said.

The APC spokesman described the Appeal Court judgment that nullified the April 11, 2015 governorship election in the state as “God’s pathway to liberate the state and its people” and called on Akwa Ibom people to rise and take their destiny in their hands by voting out the PDP government during the forthcoming rerun election.

He also described the governorship election as the most fraudulent election ever held in the history of Akwa Ibom State.

“It is blasphemous for anyone to call such an election a divine mandate when the election was scandalously flawed and stained with the blood of innocent Akwa Ibom people”, he said.

On the planned reception of the APC governorship flag bearer by Akwa Ibom people prayer submit slated for today, Friday, January 8, 2016, Chief Awak said the event is aimed at receiving Umana Umana, who he described as the spear bearer of the struggle to liberate the state.

He said they will also use the opportunity to thank God for His blessings.

“The prayer summit is to thank God for the wonderful blessing of the 2015 Appeal Court judgement that gave justice to Akwa Ibom people. Akwa Ibom people want to use the APC prayer summit to come out to bless God and thank Him for the victory which wiped the tears of the fathers, mothers, brothers and sisters who lost their loved ones during the April election”.

He described Umana Umana as “the authentic leader of Akwa Ibom people. He is not tied to the apron of anybody but rather represents the collective struggle against servitude”.

Awak, who expressed optimism that the Supreme Court will uphold the judgment of the appellate court, added that Friday’s reception and prayer submit will also witness the formal defection of some PDP members to the APC.

According to him, those ready to dump the PDP for the APC later today include former member of the House of Representatives, Eseme Eyiboh, former governorship aspirant; Larry Esin, former Speaker of the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly; Mr. Ignatius Edet, former chairman of Uyo LGA; Mr. Ekerette Ekpeyong, former chairman of Ibesikpo LGA; Bishop Ekpe James, former chairman of Itu LGA; Mac Joe among others.

Awak said “the massive defection of Akwa Ibom people from the PDP to the APC is an indication that people of the state are ready for change”.

“Victory for the APC in the rerun is imminent. The people are saying enough is enough of servitude and internal slavery. The current defection of people from PDP to APC is only a tip of the iceberg. More mass defection will come after the Supreme Court judgment. For eight years PDP used hunger as an instrument of control. PDP was not a democratic party”, he said.

On whether the APC will fulfill its campaign promise of paying Akwa Ibom students an annual bursary of N50,000 annually, the party’s spokesperson answered in the affirmative.

In response to another question whether the APC, if elected into government in the state will complete all ongoing projects, Awak pledged that all major projects dating back to the Victor Attah administration that have positive impact on the lives of the people will be completed but regretted that seven months after Udom Emmanuel came into office as ‘caretaker’ Governor, “no single project has been executed”.

“Udom has received over N100 billion since coming into office yet nothing to show for it. Any serious government should have a serious project to show in three months. Akwa Ibom people, rise up and utilize this opportunity providence has provided us through the forthcoming rerun and liberate yourselves”, he added.

President Muhammadu Buhari has challenged the National Research and Innovation Council, NRIC, to deepen scientific research in Nigeria, with the hope of producing Nigerian Nobel laureates in the sciences.

Renowned playwright, Professor Wole Soyinka, is Nigeria’s only Nobel laureate. He won the world’s most prestigious prize in literature in 1986.

While Nigeria has produced world renowned scientists, none of them have been found worthy of winning the Nobel laureate prize in the sciences.

In his remarks at the inaugural meeting of NRIC on Thursday, President Buhari said Nigeria’s vision of becoming one of the world’s 20 largest economies by 2020 could only be achieved when science, technology and innovation are fully integrated into the nation’s national socio-economic development process.

Mr. Buhari expressed hope that the body, which was inaugurated on February, 18, 2014, would focus more on acquiring esteemed positions and prizes in world science, than merely producing scientific journals and publications.

“I am aware that Nigeria must accord high priority to science and technology if it must take its rightful place among the leading economies in the modern world”, the president said.

“It is my fervent hope that our research and innovation output should be measured by number of intellectual property such as patents granted and not only by the number of articles published in scholarly journals.

“By this action, Nigeria will become a centre of discoveries, inventions and innovation in all fields of science and technology. Before long we should be in a position to produce Nobel Laureates in the sciences”, the president stated.

Mr. Buhari noted that the NRIC is designed to accelerate the growth of innovation-based entrepreneurship in the country and to create conditions for the commercialization of current and future research findings in our universities and research institutes.

The president said the government had structured the NRIC to provide for the establishment of a Technical Advisory Committee (TAC) consisting of technocrats from the various fields to ensure a full implementation of resolutions of the council.

He also declared government’s support for the NRIC and asked for collective effort by members of the body to ensure the actualization of its objectives.

The meeting was attended by Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, Ministers of Science and Technology (Ogbonnaya Onu), Information and Culture (Lai Mohammed), Power Works and Housing (Babatunde Fashola) and Minister of State for Petroleum (Ibe Kachikwu) among others.

The deadly nerve agent sarin has possibly been used in Syria, the United Nations acting disarmament chief has told the UN Security Council. Kim Won-soo spoke to reporters on Tuesday after briefing the Security Council behind closed doors on the latest report from the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW). Aljazeera reports:

The report said OPCW investigators – who looked at 11 allegations of chemical weapons use – came across one instance of blood samples indicating “that individuals were at some point exposed to sarin or a sarin-like substance.” “Further investigation would be necessary to determine when or under what circumstances such exposure might have occurred,” the report said.

The OPCW only carries out fact-finding missions, but the Security Council in August established an expert team that will seek to assign blame for chemical attacks in Syria’s war. OPCW spokesman, Malik Ellahi, said there hasn’t yet been a decision taken on which body should conduct further investigation into the blood samples.

The opposition Syrian National Coalition has urged the OPCW to investigate an alleged chemical attack last month in the Damascus suburb of Moadamiyeh – an area besieged by government forces. The opposition blamed President Bashar al-Assad’s regime, but the Syrian government denied that and blamed rebels and the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant.

Controversial American rapper, Tyga, might have gotten himself into some fresh trouble at this early stage of the New Year as a 14 year old girl has come out to say that the former Young Money rapper persistently texted her on social media.

Molly O’Malia, a model, who is represented by Gloria Allred said Tyga initiated contact with her first on Instagram contrary to earlier reports in December.

She spoke about her interaction with Tyga at a press conference on Monday.

I’m very upset that a story about Tyga, Kylie Jenner and me was published in OK! Magazine and I want people to know the truth. The truth is that Tyga contacted me first. He direct-messaged me on Instagram. I knew who he was, but I was surprised that he was contacting me. I thought that it could possibly be about my music but he did not mention that in his initial communication. I thought that was strange but I was thinking he would bring it up in his next message to me. However, he didn’t mention in the next message” said the 14-year-old girl in the video.
She said after a while she got uncomfortable talking to Tyga.
I began to feel uncomfortable when he asked me to FaceTime with him,” said the girl. “He asked me to FaceTime three times but I didn’t do it. Because of my discomfort with why he wanted to communicate with me, I quickly stopped responding.

The 14-year-old girls also stated that she did not reveal any information about her and Tyga to OK! Magazine.
I never sent the communication between Tyga and me to OK! Magazine and I don’t know how they obtained them. I would never have allowed OK! Magazine or any other magazine to use them.
“It is also upsetting to me that OK! Magazine never even contacted my mom or me to check the facts to see if what they’re publishing was true. I’m speaking out today because I don’t want what happened to me to happen to any other young girl” she said.
Tyga hasn’t responded to the girl’s claim yet.

One US service member has been killed and two wounded reportedly during a special forces mission in Afghanistan’s southern Helmand province. The forces were taking part in a counter-terrorism operation when they came under fire, US officials said. One of two medical helicopter sent to rescue casualties is damaged on the ground and has yet to be recovered. The fighting is said to be ongoing.

About 12,000 foreign soldiers are still deployed to help tackle the Taliban. Some of the foreign troops were sent to counter the recent militant insurgency in Helmand. US military spokesman Brig Gen Wilson Shoffner said one service member had died as a result of wounds, adding: “We are deeply saddened by this loss… our heartfelt sympathies go out to the families and friends of those involved.”

The identity of the casualties has not yet been revealed and no official details given on their service branch.

A number of Afghan forces were also reported to have been wounded. Pentagon press secretary Peter Cook said: “This is an ongoing situation, there is still a fight going on in the immediate surroundings.” Two HH-60 Pave Hawk “medevac” helicopters were earlier dispatched to the scene. One was forced to turn back after coming under fire, Mr Cook said.

President Obama on speech tears
A visibly emotional President Barack Obama – at one point wiping tears from his cheek – unveiled his plan to tighten control and enforcement of firearms in the US, using his presidential powers in the absence of legal changes he implored Congress to pass. Obama on Tuesday accused the gun lobby of taking Congress hostage, but said “they cannot hold America hostage”.

He insisted it was possible to uphold the second amendment while doing something to tackle the frequency of mass shootings in the US that he said had become “the new normal”.

The much-debated second amendment of the constitution guarantees the right of citizens to own firearms, which have killed more than 100,000 Americans over the past 10 years.

“This is not a plot to take away everybody’s guns,” Obama said. “You pass a background check, you purchase a firearm. The problem is some gun sellers have been operating under a different set of rules.” Obama’s actions ensure that gun rights – one of the most bitterly divisive issues in America – will be at the forefront of the 2016 presidential campaign, which begins in earnest next month with the first primary contests.

Accusing Obama of gross overreach, many of the Republican presidential candidates have vowed to rip up the new gun restrictions upon taking office. Democratic frontrunner Hillary Clinton said she was proud of Obama’s efforts and promised she would safeguard them, the AP news agency reported.

The United Nations has launched a fact finding mission into new allegations that its peacekeepers sexually abused four underage girls in Bangui, the capital of the Central African Republic (CAR).

The UN mission in CAR, known as MINUSCA, said in a statement on Tuesday that it was “investigating fresh allegations concerning both s*xual exploitation and abuse and other misconduct by UN Peacekeepers and international forces in Bangui”.

Stephane Dujarric, spokesman for the UN secretary-general, said the four victims had been provided with medical and psychosocial care, but did not specify when the alleged abuse took place or how many peacekeepers were involved in the case.

In line with UN policy not to name the countries whose peacekeepers were accused of s*xual misconduct, Dujarric did not say where the peacekeepers were from. He added, however, that the UN had asked the countries to immediately launch their own investigations – nations are responsible for holding their own troops accountable in such cases.

The Ekiti State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has chided Governor Ayodele Fayose for appointing Dele Adesina (SAN) as a member of the State Judicial Service Commission (SJSC), saying the action is yet another constitutional breach in his series of illegal acts in the last one year.

The Ekiti APC in a statement yesterday by its Publicity Secretary, Hon. Taiwo Olatunbosun in Ado Ekiti, described Mr. Adesina’s appointment as a violation of the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, which stated that “no person can be appointed into the Judicial Service Commission twice”.

“Adesina was first appointed as a member of the Judicial Service Commission by Governor Kayode Fayemi in 2012, and against the law, he was again appointed by Governor Fayose as the Chairman of the commission in 2015”, he explained.

Citing the relevant section of the constitution to buttress his objection, Mr. Olatunbosun said: “By the provision of Section 200(3) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, no person can be appointed to State Civil Service Commission, Judicial Service Commission or State Independent Electoral Commission twice.

“Barrister Adesina (SAN) was appointed by Fayemi to serve in Ekiti Judicial Service Commission, now Fayose has re-appointed him to the same office.

“This is illegal and unconstitutional. This provision of the law is an offshoot of Sections 197,198 and 199 of Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria”.

5 Health Benefits of Cashew Nuts
#1. These nuts are packed with calories. About 50 grams of Cashew Nuts contain 275 calories. In addition, they are rich in vitamins, soluble dietary fiber, minerals and many phytochemicals that prevent diseases, including cancers.
#2. Cashews are also packed with monounsaturated fatty acids good for the heart health like palmitoleic and oleic acids. They belong to the group of essential fatty acids that can decrease the level of harmful LDL cholesterol and increase the level of good HDL cholesterol in our blood.
Scientific studies have shown that the so-called Mediterranean diet which is mostly based on monounsaturated fatty acids can help the system protect itself from strokes and coronary artery disease by supporting the blood lipid profile.
#3. These tasty nuts are rich in essential minerals too. Some of the most useful minerals found in cashew nuts are magnesium, potassium, manganese, copper, selenium, zinc and iron.
Only a handful of these nuts on a daily basis can provide the necessary amount of these minerals and protect you from deficiency-related diseases. Selenium is a very important micronutrient and it works as a co-factor for antioxidant enzymes like Glutathione peroxides known as one of the strongest antioxidants in human body. Copper acts as a co-factor for many important enzymes too like superoxide dismutase and cytochrome c-oxidase. Zinc plays the same role together with enzymes that are responsible for the regulation of the growth and progress of digestion, gonadal function and DNA synthesis.
#4. Cashews can be quite useful in numerous essential vitamins like pyridoxine or vitamin B6, pantothenic acid or vitamin B5, thiamin or vitamin B11 and riboflavin. Just 3.5 Oz (100 gr) of nuts provide about 30% of daily recommended levels of B6 (that’s about 0.147 mg). B6 significantly lowers the chances of developing sideroblastic anemia and homocystinuria.
On the other hand, niacin improves the protection against pellagra or dermatitis. In addition, the aforementioned vitamins are crucial for metabolism of fat, protein and carbs at a cellular level.
#5. Furthermore, cashews also contain a small quantity of zeaxanthin, a very important pigment of flavonoid antioxidant, which is selectively absorbed inside the retinal macula in our eyes. It is believed that it provides protective and antioxidant UV ray filtering features and protects us from ARMD or age-related macular degeneration in old people.
Besides all these benefits they bring, Cashew Nuts are considered to be the best alternative treatment for depression.
How to Naturally Treat Depression – A Basic Guide to Cashew Nutrition
Cashew nuts are an excellent source of tryptophan, a vital amino acid that we need to take through our food. This amino acid helps children grow and develop, regulates our mood, improves sleep, balances our behavior and significantly lowers the level of stress, depression and anxiety.

Only two handfuls of cashews contain between 1.000 and 2.000 mg of tryptophan, which has proven to be equally successful as prescription antidepressants in many cases and the only difference, is that you will avoid the antidepressant side effects. Of course, this is something that big pharma hides from us.
According to David Adams, FDA Deputy Commissioner for Policy who was part of the Drug Information Association Annual Meeting in 1993, we must pay close attention to the things that are happening around dietary supplements and the legal arena. If the producers of natural remedies manage to get the support, there will be a completely new class of products that will be competing with existing drugs. This is why there is need for a special law that will regulate the supplements.
In addition, the FDA Dietary Task Force has released a report in 1993, saying that the existence and selling of dietary supplements won’t jeopardize the efforts to create new drugs.
As you are probably aware, big pharma is a huge business, but there is much safer and effective natural depression treatment that they want to hide from us, because they will lose a lot of money.
An introduction to Cashew Nut Allergy
Beside almond, walnut and other similar allergies, cashew nut allergy is one of the most frequent food allergies in both adults and children. Just like peanuts, cashews can lead to very severe allergic reactions, even if an individual has taken a small quantity of cashews.

Health Benefits Of Cashew Nuts

A Nigerian army soldier headquarted in Maiduguri, who does not want to disclose his personality, came up with a warning letter to the Nigerian government.

He brought forward eight crucial questions the Muhammadu Buhari administration should provide answers to by the end of January, otherwise the soldiers promise to organise a large-scale strike to draw the attention of the government to their problems.

We, the soldiers in Maiduguri, are losing patience, and we are planning massive protests in the country by January; then they will know our pains.

Here are the questions we want them to answer.

1. Is the Nigerian army really winning the war against the insurgency?

We are not winning the war against these people, if you will. Come to any location across Maiduguri and interview the soldiers one by one – then you will know the pains we are passing through here. They keep deceiving Nigerians on media, sitting down in Abuja and telling the people what is happening in the theatre. Let them come and stay in these environment.

2. Are we really paid our entitlement as the soldiers who fight and die for their nation?

Why has Dambazau, who is now the minister of interior, suspended our allowances: TC allowance and furniture allowance? Why are the navy and the air forces still being paid their money? These questions should be forwarded to Dambazau.

3. Are the soldiers really equipped with good weapons to counter insurgents?

Recently some weaponry has been brought, however, most weapons we now use were bought by Goodluck Jonathan, when he postponed the last presidential election for six weeks, and the captured terrain was regained.

4. What are the tactics used in the war?

I must tell you there are no specific tactics being used. Whenever we go for any operation, we just move; most officers are so afraid that they just push the poor soldiers forward for them to remain at the rear.

5. Are we attacking the terrorists, or we are still sitting in ambush, waiting for them?

We are still sitting in ambush. Why is it so? The best form of defence is always attack. We wait for insurgents to attack and kill soldiers for nothing. The officers may lie to us that jet has bombarded the terrorists, and we should only go for mopping up. However, getting there we are likely see them waiting for us 5 km from the camp. There are saboteurs both of the upper and lower rank in the armed forces and the government.

6. Does the president visit the troops or send delegations to boost their morale?

What does President Muhammadu Buhari do to boost the morale of the troops in the war zone? Does he send delegations to visit us? No! He will never do this. Why is it so? Don’t get me wrong: the president is really trying to make sure the war is coming to an end.

7. Why do they sentence our fellow colleagues to 10-year imprisonments?

Why those generals stealing billions of naira are still walking and driving all over the country freely? There are the soldiers who were praying for Muhammadu Buhari to win during the last election so that he could at least understand since he was once in the system. Some of these poor soldiers are the bread winners in their families, I must tell you. But look at the outcome now. Where are those who stole the money meant to purchase arms for the troops, where are those who stole $1 billion? I feel that TB Joshua’s prophesy is coming into reality now.

8. How much is the operational allowance paid to the troops?

Why are we not paid our entitlement, even those who fought and died for their fatherland? When their families come to carry the corps, we are the ones to give them money to convey the corps.
They pay us just N30, 000 for an operation. Why do we work like elephants, and eat like ants in this country? Moreover, you will never see the money in two-three months. When we are out of town, our feeding is nothing to write home about. Most commanding officers spend the allowances meant for our colleagues lying in the hospital shot.

Where is the e-payment President Muhammadu Buhari has promised to provide the armed forces with? Let our salaries come directly from the CBN, and then nobody will have a chance to eat our money.
I must tell you the soldiers here are sick and tired of the everyday propaganda. If we don’t see any improvements by the end of January, there will be arrangements to vent our anger. You know what it means when soldiers strike in the country. Those who sit under air conditioners eating our money will see us in full force.

Nigerian Army To Buhari: We Are Going On Strike In January If You Don’t Pay Us

The Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund, IMF, Christine Lagarde on Tuesday said Nigeria does not need assistance from the organisation despite battling with revenue shortfall caused by the global oil shock. Lagarde stated this in Abuja after a meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari.

Lagarde said, "Let me be very clear: I'm not here nor is my team here to negotiate a loan with conditionalities, we're not programming negotiations. "Frankly, given the determination and resilience displayed by the presidency and his team, I don’t see why an IMF programme is going to be needed." Lagarde, who is in the country on a four-day official visit, will also hold talks with the central bank governor and business leaders.

Former president Dr. Goodluck Jonathan has said, Nigerians shamed prophets of doom on 2015 elections. The former president stated this in his Facebook message to expressed his gratitude to African Sun Times for naming him as its 2015 International Person of the Year.

Jonathan wrote: "I thank The African Sun Times for naming me as its International Person of the year, 2015. I am indeed humbled by this honour. When I think about it, I understand why this medium may have thought me worthy of such an honour. However, I believe that my people, the Nigerian people, are more deserving of this honour.

"We, the Nigerian people put to shame naysayers and prophets of doom and in 2015, we held a most transparent, violence free and credible elections that transferred power from one political party to another and from an incumbent to the opposition, without rancour, bitterness or strife.

In the process, we proved that nobody's political ambition is worth the blood of any Nigerian or any national of any country for that matter. That to me, is a most worthy testimonial of the character of the Nigerian nation and the resilience of our people which is why I dedicate this honour to them. May God continue to bless Nigeria and Nigerians."

Three Sunni mosques in Iraq have been bombed and partially destroyed while at least two people have been killed in suspected retaliation for the execution of a Shia leader in Saudi Arabia, officials and police say.

Groups of men wearing military uniforms detonated explosives at two mosques overnight in the Hilla region, south of Baghdad, while al-Fateh mosque in Sinjar, just outside Hilla, was also damaged in similar circumstances.

Saudi Arabia executed 47 “terrorists”, including the Shia religious leader Nimr al-Nimr and a convicted al-Qaeda leader, Faris al-Zahrani, on Saturday. Saudi Arabia announced on Sunday it was severing diplomatic ties with Iran following an attack on its embassy in Tehran during protests against the executions in the kingdom on Saturday.

In Hilla, about 80km from the Iraqi capital Baghdad, a police officer said the Ammar bin Yasser mosque in the Bakerli neighbourhood was bombed after midnight. “After we heard the explosion, we went to its source and found that improvised explosive devices had been planted in a Hilla mosque,” a police officer said.

Ten houses were also damaged, he said, adding: “Residents said a group of people with military uniforms carried out this operation.” Falah al-Khafaji, a provincial council member, and a police source said that a guard inside the building had been killed. No group has yet claimed responsibility for the attacks.

Afghan special forces killed a group of attackers inside in a house in the northern city of Mazar-i-Sharif, bringing to an end a 24-hour siege following the attack on the nearby Indian consulate.

The soldiers killed the three attackers who had shut themselves in a large house near the consulate, said Abdul Razaq Qaderi, deputy police chief of Balkh province.

He said an investigation was under way to try to identify the men and those behind the attack, which occurred on the same day armed men attacked an Indian air basein Pathankot in Punjab state near the border with Pakistan.

Eight members of the security forces were wounded in the Mazar-i-Sharif gun battle which followed the attack on the consulate. The Indian ambassador said all the consulate staff were safe.

Atta Mohammad Noor, Balkh’s governor, blamed “enemies of peace and stability” for the incident. The twin attacks in Mazar-i-Sharif and Pathankot came amid renewed efforts to lower tension between India and Pakistan, and restart peace talks with the Taliban in Afghanistan.
