What's New Here?

The management of Kano Zoological Garden, Audu Bako Zoo, says the garden requires N40 million to enable it restock new species of animals.

The Director, Zoo services, Ali Yola, disclosed this in Kano on Saturday.

He said, the management had already forwarded the request to the state government for consideration and approval.

He said restocking the zoo with new animals would attract more visitors to the zoo and generate more revenue for the state.

“Over the years we have been looking for an opportunity to restock the zoo with new animals.

“Some of the animals, at the zoo now have no partners; they are either males or females only.

He said acquiring additional animal species was necessary in order to meet international standard.

“We also need to have standard education centre. So the facilities at the centre need to be rehabilitated to meet the required standard”, he said.

He said as part of effort to generate more revenue, the agency had in 2012 introduced mobile zoo which enabled it to showcase its different species of animals to the public.

He said 50 per cent of the people who visit the zoo are secondary school students who come from different parts of the country.

He said the state government had recently given the management approval to rehabilitate some facilities and erect pavilion/tents for conferences to generate more revenue.

Mr. Yola disclosed that the zoo had donated and exchanged animals with University of Ibadan zoo, Karimi Sanda Park, Maiduguri, Jos Park and National Museum, Niamey in Niger Republic.

“We have also recently donated 10 different animal species to Olusegun Obasanjo mini zoo”, he said.

Leaders of political rivals Taiwan and China have met for the first time in more than 60 years for talks that come amid rising anti-Beijing sentiment on the self-ruled island and just weeks ahead of elections. China’s President Xi Jinping and his Taiwanese counterpart, Ma Ying-jeou, shook hands at the start of the summit in Singapore on Saturday.

Before the leaders entered a closed meeting, Xi said the two sides are “one family” and cannot be pulled apart. Ma responded by telling Xi the two sides should observe mutual respect after decades of hostility and rivalry and “respect each other’s values and way of life”.

“Even though this is the first meeting, we feel like old friends. Behind us is history stretching for 60 years,” he said. “Now, before our eyes, there are fruits of conciliation instead of confrontation.” It was the first such summit since China’s civil war ended in 1949.

The talks come ahead of presidential and parliamentary elections in Taiwan, in which the independence-leaning Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) is favoured to win, something Beijing wants to avoid. The ruling Nationalists, also known as the Kuomintang (KMT), retreated to Taiwan after losing the civil war to the communists, who are still in charge in Beijing.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has agreed to suspend all Russian flights to Egypt after a recommendation by his chief of intelligence for a halt until the cause of the crash of a passenger jet in the Sinai Peninsula is determined.

Friday’s suspension came after several days of statements by British and American officials that it was possible a bomb on board had brought down the Russian carrier, Metrojet’s Airbus A321-200, which crashed 23 minutes after takeoff from the Sinai resort of Sharm el-Sheikh.

There are around 45,000 Russian tourists in Egypt.

The crash on Saturday killed all 224 people on board. Russian and Egyptian officials had bristled at the statements, saying it was too soon to determine the cause. The suspension, covering all of Egypt, is even more sweeping than that imposed by Britain, which had halted flights to Sharm el-Sheikh only.

“I think it will be reasonable to suspend all Russian flights to Egypt until we determine the real reasons of what happened,” Intelligence Chief Alexander Bortnikov said in televised comments. “It concerns tourist flights most of all.” Russia’s emergency situations minister, Vladimir Puchkov, said wreckage from the plane has been brought to Moscow for tests.

Governors of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have warned the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) against partisanship in the disbursement of bailout funds to beneficiary states.

The warning follows allegations by the opposition party that the CBN has become a tool in the hands of the governing All Progressives Congress (APC)

The governors, under the aegis of PDP Governors Forum, cited the refusal of the apex bank to release the bailout fund allotted to Kogi State.

A statement on Friday by the coordinator of the Forum, Mr. Osaro Onaiwu, said while the CBN did not delay in the disbursement of the funds to beneficiary states under the control of the APC, it has refused to disburse same to Kogi State, which is under the control of the PDP.

The governors lamented that the CBN has allowed itself to be dictated to by the APC, saying that Kogi State had fulfilled all the requirements spelt out by the CBN for the release of the fund.

“We urge the CBN to insulate itself from politics and the control of the ruling party if it does not want to create political and financial crises in the country.

“How come almost all APC states that applied for bailout have gotten theirs but states like Kogi that has fulfilled all the requirements has been denied its share with no explanation from the CBN?

“The CBN Governor, Mr. Godwin Emefiele, has to insulate the apex bank from the shenanigans of politicians to avoid serious political and economic dislocation in the country.

“It is important and urgent that the CBN releases the N50 billion bailout due Kogi state to ease the suffering of the common people in the state”, the statement added.

NASA’s Mars-orbiting Maven spacecraft has discovered that the sun likely robbed the red planet of its once-thick atmosphere and water. On Thursday, scientists reported that even today, the solar wind is stripping away about 100 grams of atmospheric gas every second. That’s about a quarter-pound a second lost to the stream of charged particles shooting away from the sun at 1 million mph (1.61 million kph).

Big solar storms travelling at twice that speed increase the escape rate by 10 to 20 times – and more. Because of their prevalence billions of years ago, these storms would have been enough to gut the atmosphere of ancient Mars and transform it from a moist, warm place potentially capable of microscopic life to the cold, dry desert of today.

“I can’t help but imagine hamburgers flying out of the Martian atmosphere, one per second,” Maven scientist Dave Brain told reporters with a smile. “It’s instead oxygen and carbon dioxide that are leaving the planet, which are important both for water and for the climate of the planet overall.”

These latest Mars findings by robotic scouts such as Maven are a key part of NASA’s push to send human explorers to the red planet in the 2030s. Just over a month ago, the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter revealed evidence of salt water trickling down Martian slopes, at least in the summer. NASA’s next mission begins in March with the launch of another orbiting explorer.

The Borno State Government on Thursday inaugurated the construction of 25, 000 family shelters for Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) taking refuge in public schools in Maiduguri.

The Commissioner for Education, Inuwa Kubo, said at the Bakasi IDP camp that the shelters would be constructed by international donor organizations led by the UNHCR.

He said the construction of the shelters would last for two weeks after which public schools will re-open.

Mr. Kubo, who is also the Chairman of the State Committee on the Re-opening of Public Schools, said the government was concerned about the continued closure of schools, hence the need for the relocation of the IDPs to allow schools to re-open.

“It is an interesting moment in my life to stand before you to inform the world that we are flagging off the construction of 2,500 family shelters for IDPs staying in public schools in Maiduguri.

“The main aim is to relocate the IDPs so that schools can re-open”, he said.

According to him, the committee had sensitized the IDPs on the condition of the new family shelter.

“We have done some sensitization among the IDPs, we have assured them that wherever we are taking them cannot be less than where they were”, Kubo said.

He added that the international donors had pledged to provide water and other facilities in the shelters.

“Our partners are going to provide water and other sanitation facilities like toilets, in addition to provision of additional feeding points.

“I think it is going to provide standard shelters for the IDPs pending when they will eventually return home”, Mr. Kubo said.

Tragedy struck at the Enugu state House of Assembly complex on Tuesday, November 3 as an unidentified manual labourer died after he was bitten by a snake.

The Punch reports that the labourer, said to be a native of Abakiliki in Ebonyi state was contracted to cut grasses at the complex.

He was hired alongside his colleagues from “Ogbo Mmanu”, a popular hub for manual labourers in Enugu, to clear the thick grasses that had taken over the Assembly complex.

As they were executing the job, they saw a big snake and tried to kill it, inflicting a deep wound on its head.

According to an eyewitness, who refused to be mentioned, the labourers though they had succeeded in killing the snake and returned to work but unfortunately, the wounded serpent, which had been lying still as if dead suddenly attacked the victim and bit him on the ankle.

His colleagues finally succeeded in killing the serpent and rushed him to Parklane General Hospital in Enugu.

He was relocated to a herbal home in the Ugwuaji area of Enugu, after his condition failed to improve at the general hospital.

It was learnt that he died a few hours after he was brought to the herbal home.

Report has it that the the management of the House of Assembly wanted to cover up the incident.

Ebere Amaraizu, the police public relations officer, Enugu state police command, confirmed the incident.

The remains of the deceased has been reportedly taken by his kinsmen to his country home in Abakiliki for burial.

Snake bites can be deadly if not treated quickly. A snake head can keep biting for up to an hour after being decapitated. Last month, over 50 people were bitten by snakes fleeing flooded areas in Kanam, Kanke and other communities in Plateau state.

In September, a mild drama played out at the Ota High court premises in Ogun state, as a mysterious snake forced a judge to release 7 detained journalists.

US President Barack Obama has threatened to impose trade sanctions on South Africa for blocking imports of meat from the US.
Obama said on Thursday that he will suspend South Africa’s right to ship farm products to the US duty-free unless it begins to dismantle barriers to American pork, poultry, and beef within 60 days. Aljazeera has more:
“I am taking this step because South Africa continues to impose several long-standing barriers to US trade, including barriers affecting certain US agricultural exports,” he said in a letter to Congress. At stake are trade benefits South Africa receives under the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA) which is meant to encourage African countries to open their economies to trade.

The US says South Africa has been blocking US chicken imports for 15 years and has used “unwarranted sanitary restrictions” to keep out US pork and beef. Mike Brown, president of the US National Chicken Council, backed the move and said it made no sense for the US to give special preferences to countries that treated it unfairly.

“This should send a clear message to South Africa and their poultry industry that they will not be given a ‘Get out of jail free’ card every time AGOA rounds the turn,” he said. South Africa exported $176m in agricultural products to the US under AGOA in 2014 and potential lost benefits are estimated to total $4m to $7m.

Pastor Chijioke of Breasts and Honey New International Church, who allegedly heals women by sucking their breasts was caught in the hot seat last week when a female radio DJ called him using a fake name to ask for spiritual guidance.

In the phone call, the DJ who works at Hero Radion, Nakuru, Kenya told the Pastor that her problem is that she can’t seem to get married. Every time she has a man, when things get serious between them, the men run away.

This is the lady that interviewed him..her name is Kate Vobic

The pastor then told her that she has the spirit of rejection and he has to suck it out from her breasts in order to get deliverance.

“The spirit lies in the chest of a lady… the more you suck the chest the more you get the fulfilling of the Lord.”
The man’s congregation only has women and they are told not to wear bras to make sucking their breasts much easier.
The DJ then asked the pastor if he can tell her where in the bible it says that a pastor must suck a woman’s breasts to heal her.
The pastor refuses to answer and says,
“Don’t bring up the bible, you just come, we do this thing and then we finish.”
Later in the conversation, the DJ busts the pastor and tells him her real name and that he is live on air.
The defensive pastor then got angry and denied his real name which he had given her before and says she should call him a man of God instead.
When asked why he is deceiving people, he replied saying she is stupid and she just called because she has been hearing women saying that he sucks breasts nicely.

Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, elders and major stakeholders in Akwa Ibom State have accused the governing All Progressives Congress, APC, of planning to forcefully take over the state and Rivers State in the likelihood of re-run elections in the two PDP-controlled states.

The Governorship Election Petitions Tribunals had in separate judgments ordered a re-run election in 18 local government areas in Akwa Ibom State while that of Rivers was upturned.

Governors Nyesom Wike and Udom Emmanuel of Rivers and Akwa Ibom States have separately appealed the Tribunal’s ruling.

Speaking through Senator Anietie Okon, at a briefing in Uyo in reaction to a statement credited to Imo State governor, Owelle Rochas Okorocha, that “Rivers and Akwa Ibom states are very strategic to APC”, the elders warned that any attempt by the APC to subvert the collective will of the Akwa Ibom people as manifestly expressed in the April 11, 2015 governorship election, would be resisted.

According to Okon: “When the APC talks about Akwa Ibom and Rivers states as being strategic to their objectives, it appears it is their ravenous and ghoulish intent to take over Akwa Ibom State by force and that implies that there is a determination by them to break all the rules and break all the laws and through subjugation, conquer the Akwa Ibom people. It will not happen. We are not surprised given the document that is credited to the APC where they detailed their plans to trample upon the express will of the people by their chaotic, riotous and contradictory process that have been handed down through the tribunal”.

According to a statement by the spokesman of the Office of the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation (OHCSF) Haruna R. Imrana, the public should disregard the account to avoid falling victims of fraudsters.

“The attention of the Office of the Head of Civil Service has been drawn to the false face book account created by some fraudulent individuals in the name of the Acting Head of the Federal Civil Service of the Federation, Mrs Winifred Ekanem Oyo-Ita.

“The false account purportedly carried advertisements for vacancies in the Office of the Head of Civil Service of the Federation. The general Public is hereby warned that the so called Facebook account is false and dubious.

A witness in the ongoing trial of a former governor of Gombe State and serving senator, Danjuma Goje, Shehu Mohammed Atiku, has told a Federal High Court, Gombe that the ex-governor forged the Resolution of the House and collected N5 billion facility from Access Bank.

“My Lord, the said resolution did not emanate from the Gombe State House of Assembly and I was not a signatory to it”, said Atiku, a former Clerk of the Gombe State House of Assembly and one of the three witnesses called by counsel to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, Wahab Shitu.

In a statement on Monday by the EFCC spokesman, Wilson Uwujaren, the witness, while testifying, told the court that, “as the Admin Officer of the House, I chair management committee of the House, keep the record of House proceedings and maintain its records”.

However, the court had to cut short the proceeding and adjourn for further hearing owing to the fracas that ensued as suspected political thugs invaded the court premises and disrupted the proceedings.

The thugs also launched attack on the accused persons and others outside the court premises during which the second accused person, Aliyu El-Nafarty and one other person, were seriously wounded.

In the ensuing melee, the statement said vehicles were vandalized including that of the defence counsel, Paul Erokoro, SAN.

“The attack forced the presiding judge, Justice B. O. Quadri to adjourn to November 25, 2015.

“Justice Quadir condemned the attack and directed both counsel to do a report on what happened, which he promised to forward to the Chief Judge, Federal High Court for necessary action”, it said.

Recall that Goje, alongside four other accused persons, was arraigned by the EFCC on charges of conspiracy, money laundering and embezzlement of funds belonging to the state government while he was Governor of Gombe between May 2003 and May 2011.

Turkey’s ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) has won a critical parliamentary election, regaining the majority it lost in June. BBC reports:

"With almost all ballots counted, the state-run Anadolu news agency said the AKP had won 49.4% of the vote, with the main opposition CHP on 25.4%. President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said voters had “shown that they prefer action and development to controversy”.

The pro-Kurdish HDP crossed the 10% threshold needed to claim seats. The nationalist MHP will also take seats in Ankara. In a statement, President Erdogan said the electorate had “given proof of their strong desire for the unity and integrity” of Turkey.

Early on Monday, he called on the world to respect Turkey’s national will. Mr Erdogan called the vote after the AKP lost its parliamentary majority for the first time in 13 years in June and attempts to form a coalition government failed. Speaking from the balcony of the AKP headquarters in the capital, Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu welcomed the new result, saying: “You saw the dirty games played in our country, and you have changed the game”.

Former Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Mrs. Farida Waziri, yesterday, revealed that she was blackmailed and threatened for trying to end oil-money induced corruption in the country during the tenure of President Goodluck Jonathan.

In a statement by her media aide, Ade Williams, Waziri expressed happiness that President Muhammadu Buhari is now Nigeria’s leader.

“No doubt, our over-dependence on oil revenue has brought us to the point where we are as a nation today. As an anti-corruption czar, I have seen how some of those the nation entrusted with its oil resources in the past helped themselves more than the country,” Williams quoted her to have said at the Benue State University, Makurdi, during the inauguration of World Bank’s Africa Centre of Excellence Project, Centre for Food Technology and Research.

“With our focus on agriculture, the struggle by political office holders to steal oil fund would diminish while the national wealth will be in the hands of the people instead of a privileged greedy few. We cannot all dig oil wells in our backyard but we can all farm in our backyards. It is time to end oil-money induced corruption in our land by buying into President Buhari’s vision and take ownership.

“I have made my contributions in the fight to discourage that and even recovered some of the looted funds in billions of dollars. For daring to do that, I came under fierce attacks, slander, blackmail and threats but by God’s grace and long years of experience, I survived all. I am glad today that indeed, there is a new sheriff in town.”

The speculations surrounding the would be cabinet Ministers in the President Muhammadu Buhari’s led government has been finally laid to rest by the release of the nominees on the senate floor today.
I have monitored views all over the social media. Many as usual are not devoid of sentiments and partisanship. It is pathetic to read from the APC apologists on how PDP destroyed the country for the past 16years and yet the list submitted was partially filled with same people. Personally, I am not excited about some of the nominees who have been part of the agents that ridiculed governance and fingered in various dubious dealings across the nation. Some may quickly point out to me that none of the appointees have been pronounced to be corrupt by a competent court of law, but then we know our judicial process has been deeply bastardized. From time immemorial, there has been no serious corruption cases successfully prosecuted, maybe a few exceptions here and there.

But if truth must be told, at this stage we cannot totally exclude politics from governance. The fact is without politicians, even the finest leaders will find it difficult to navigate the political terrain or attain political leadership position. Hopefully the senate will depart from the typical tradition of “bow and go” to at least do some diligent work. But again, one must not forget the senate is filled up with corrupt politicians, fraudsters and drug barons so our hopes must have limits. Even the Senate President who is to chair the screening process to ensure Ministers with clean records emerge, himself is battling corruption charges at the Code of Conduct Tribunal.

That being said, the noise about the list should be laid to rest, but then we should rather redirect our energy to other important things. I think President Buhari should be given the benefit of doubt and be supported as he steers the ship of Nigerian state from the imminent wreck it has been positioned by previous administrations which extends beyond the infamous administration of Goodluck Jonathan. So my expectations were not to see saints really, but at least to see the fine mix of politicians and technocrats led by a leader who understands the vision, and communicates it clearly.

However, the game changers should be the citizens who as a matter of urgency must resume and take serious the office of the citizen. The office is the highest office attainable in the land. As citizens, we must play active role in defining issues, considering solutions and identifying resources and priorities for action. To see the “change” we want to happen, there must be meaningful involvement of individuals in policy and program development. We must make government answerable and accountable to us. This is not negotiable, and must never be sacrificed on the altar of mediocrity.

Some other the key places we must beam our searchlight into; legislative arm, judiciary and local government administration. Often times we keep our eyes on the Executive arm government and give room for evil to thrive at other levels. We must keep our eyes on the legislators who often times are known for their notoriety in smuggling and promoting self serving laws. Also the judiciary which rarely protects the interest of the common man deserves keen attention. Like Daniel Webster said, “Justice is the ligament which holds civilized beings and civilized nations together. Wherever her temple stands, and so long as it is duly honored, there is a foundation for general security, general happiness, and the improvement and progress of our race.”

To change everything, we need everyone. The future we want to see is not all aboutBuhari and his ministers, but rather it is about us! We are the change.
God bless Nigeria

The bodies of 144 of those killed in Saturday’s air crash in Egypt have been flown back to the Russian city of St Petersburg as an investigation into the cause continues. All 224 people on the Airbus 321 – most of them Russians – died when it came down over the northern Sinai peninsula. BBC reports:

The country observed a day of mourning on Sunday after its worst air disaster. Russian Air Transport Agency head Aleksandr Neradko has said the airliner disintegrated at high altitude. The Kogalymavia plane was carrying 217 passengers, including 25 children, Russian transport authorities said. There were seven crew members on board.

Four of the passengers were Ukrainian nationals and one was from Belarus. A Russian government transport plane carrying the remains of the victims landed at St Petersburg’s Pulkovo airport on Monday morning. Vehicles later began transporting the bodies to the city’s crematorium for the identification by the relatives.

A second flight with more bodies is expected to arrive in St Petersburg in the evening. Russia says it will pay compensation to the victims’ families and help organise funeral procedures.

Fred Thompson, a former Republican U.S. senator from Tennessee who briefly ran for president and straddled the world of politics and entertainment with a prolific television and film acting career, died of cancer on Sunday at age 73.
Thompson, a onetime real-life federal prosecutor best known to prime-time TV audiences for his role as a district attorney on NBC’s hit show “Law & Order,” died from a recurrence of lymphoma, said Brent Leatherwood, executive director of the Tennessee Republican Party.

The actor-politician, who first made a name for himself in Washington as a Watergate investigator, was in hospice care at the time of his death, Leatherwood said.

“It is with a heavy heart and a deep sense of grief that we share the passing of our brother, husband, father, and grandfather, who died peacefully in Nashville surrounded by his family,” relatives said in a statement published by the Nashville Tennessean newspaper.

The tall, imposing Thompson was elected to the Senate in 1994 and served for two terms before retiring in 2003.

He announced his bid for the Republican presidential nomination on NBC’s “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno” in September 2007 but dropped out of the race in January after garnering little support.

Born in Sheffield, Alabama, Thompson earned a law degree from Vanderbilt University, became a federal prosecutor and went to work for longtime Tennessee Republican Senator Howard Baker.

It was Baker who secured him a job as minority legal counsel for the special Senate Watergate Committee investigating the 1972 burglary at the Democratic Party headquarters in Washington.

Thompson has been credited with helping Baker craft the famous question that framed the panel’s inquiry - “What did the president know, and when did he know it?”

During a nationally televised hearing in July 1973, Thompson asked the question that led to the public disclosure by White House aide Alexander Butterfield of a secret Oval Office tape-recording system.

The existence of the tapes played a pivotal role in the investigation of the Watergate cover-up and the 1974 resignation of President Richard Nixon.

Moving between politics and entertainment, Thompson played supporting roles in numerous films, including “No Way Out,” “The Hunt for Red October,” “Days of Thunder,” “Die Hard 2” and “In the Line of Fire.”

His most notable TV role was as the no-nonsense New York D.A. Arthur Branch in the long-running “Law & Order” series, in which he appeared from 2002 to 2007.

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe told South Korean President Park Geun-hye on Monday he wanted cooperation between the two countries and the United States in maintaining an open and peaceful South China Sea, a Japanese government spokesman said.

Abe also told Park during a bilateral summit in Seoul that the situation in the strategic waterway was “a common cause of concern for international society”, Deputy Chief Cabinet Secretary Koichi Hagiuda told reporters.

Last week a US Navy guided-missile destroyer sailed close to China’s man-made islands in the disputed South China Sea, drawing an angry rebuke from Beijing, which said its warships tracked and warned the American vessel.

China’s Vice Foreign Minister Zhang Yesui summoned US Ambassador Max Baucus over the incident, calling the US patrol “extremely irresponsible". The ministry earlier said the USS Lassen “illegally” entered waters near islands and reefs in the Spratlys without the Chinese government’s permission.

China claims most of the South China Sea, through which more than $5 trillion of world trade passes every year. Vietnam, Malaysia, Brunei, the Philippines and Taiwan have rival claims.
