What's New Here?

If I were to ever interview Jay-Jay Okocha, one of my top five questions would most likely be “Ever wondered how it would feel like to be invisible for a day?” Well… after Okocha’s disguise as an old man, I have my answer!

No one cared or as much as looked his way as he went about his ‘duty’ as a trash collector. Eventually Jay-Jay Okocha revealed his true identity and jaws dropped everywhere… mine included. Hehe…

So I’m sure everyone has seen his master of disguise video. What you haven’t seen however Okocha is narrating his “ordeal” at the 2016 Copa Coca-Cola finals, where he had gone to motivate the young players and fans.

The Borno State Government says it may declare a state of emergency to curb the menace of drug abuse in communities liberated from Boko Haram control.

The Commissioner for Justice, Alhaji Kaka Shehu, told the News Agency of Nigeria on Wednesday in Maiduguri that illicit drug use and abuse among the Internally Displaced Persons in the state was becoming alarming.

Shehu, also the Chairman, Borno State Committee for the Control of Drug Abuse, noted that in spite of security challenges in the state, there had been significant successes in the fight against drug abuse.

“I recall that some offices of the National Drug Law and Enforcement Agency were attacked in Gamborun Ngala, Banki, Baga and here in Maiduguri before it was taken over by Boko Haram insurgency.

“But in spite of these challenges, the NDLEA Borno command was able to recover more than 20 tonnes of various of assorted illicit drugs.

He said the agency also made significant arrests of drug barons, consumers and other traffickers over the last three years.

“It is against this backdrop that the government has deemed it fit to support the agency in its effort to wipe out the menace of drug abuse by setting up a Drug Control Committee.

“The committee comprises the military, NDLEA, Police, Civil Defence and other humanitarian and non Governmental Organisations.

“So far, we have mapped out an aggressive sensitisation on drug abuse in almost all the IDP camps because we have discovered that some IDPs are chronic addicts of illicit drugs.

“Our fear is that we do not want these IDPs to get back to their liberated homes and continue to constitute nuisance.

“We have had enough of Boko Haram and enough of our youths engaging in drug abuse. We do not want to go to the camps to start effecting arrests now because of the condition they have found themselves.

“But be rest assured that as we are moving to return them to their liberated communities, we will ensure that we rid the communities of nefarious activities.

“You can see that the truck that was intercepted with about 1,200 kilograms of Indian hemp was heading to Gamborun Ngala — a liberated community.

“The committee will then continue to liaise with the NDLEA to ensure that all liberated communities are free of illicit drugs.

“We will also liaise with the Federal High Court to ensure that all cases of drug abuse is handled with dispatch to serve as warning to others,’’ Shehu said.

Governor of Edo State, Comrade Adams Oshiomole on Wednesday commended his Lagos State counterpart, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode for his various interventions in the last 18 months of his administration, saying that it has greatly impacted on the State, especially in the area of traffic reduction.

Oshiomhole, who spoke at the closing ceremony of the 16th National Women Conference, organised by the Committee of Wives of Lagos State Officials (COWLSO), commended the wife of the Governor of Lagos State, Mrs. Bolanle Ambode, particularly for sustaining COWLSO since its establishment, adding that the choice of the theme for this year’s Conference “Strong Family, Strong Nation’, was quite instructive.

Speaking on the specific challenges posed by modern lifestyle on the family where the parents would have to leave home early and come home late, Oshiomole said Governor Ambode, with his strategic traffic management initiatives was to a very large extent addressing the challenges.

Oshiomole said, “As I was coming to this place today, I noticed something that I think is worth celebrating because of its impact in helping family unity and family union. Why will you wake up at 5am or 4am just to be at work at 8am devoting all the time to traffic?

“The reason was because of the huge traffic challenges but when I received the invitation for today’s event and I was advised that it was 10am and I know my brother, Governor Ambode keeps to time, I said we have to get up early and I told my wife that we are going to spend about two hours from Ikeja Airport to get to Ikoyi, but I was very pleasantly surprised that coming from Ikeja to this place, it was like flying a first class aircraft from Alausa to the heart of Ikoyi.”

“When I got here, I was asking the Governor on how he did it and he shared with me the interventions put in place within months of his assumption of office that have helped to completely reorder the traffic in Lagos such that when we slow down to about 20km per hour, we noticed people asking what is causing this go slow but things have changed so much.”

He said the interventions of the Governor was not only reducing traffic and fuel consumption, but was also bringing back the good times of family bonding as travel time has reduced, hence husbands and wives don’t have excuse of traffic to get home late or leave very early.

Oshiomhole said over the years as Governor of Edo State, he has had cause to learn and borrow from the template Lagos was running, expressing optimism that his successor and Governor-elect, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, would be willing to borrow a leaf from the COWLSO Conference as well as the traffic management strategy of Lagos.

“We borrowed what is happening in Lagos to make the case for Godwin Obaseki in Edo that Nigeria must move away from a tradition in which you have to be a celebrated politician to become eligible to contest for a political office, and that what we need in times like this are skills and people with managerial acumen and competence and we readily referred to Lagos as an example of what works with a seasoned and indisputable leader like Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu laying the foundation, dreaming big, dreaming clearly and setting the vision and identifying capable young men and women to translate those vision in a manner that is unprecedented in the history of our country,” Oshiomhole said.

He added that with the achievements of Governor Ambode, so far, he (the Governor) has shown that the only poverty to address is the poverty of ideas, adding that once the brain is creative and imaginative with a Governor that is ready to apply himself, there is no problem that would defer solution.

“You have shown that our task as leaders is not to lament what does not work but to think through how to make it work and that you are doing; that you have done and I know that you will continue to do,” Oshiomole said.

The Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, Dr. Okechukwu Enalamah, yesterday, said the results of the efforts by the President Muhammadu Buhari-led administration will surprise Nigerians in 2017.

The minister, who was in Abeokuta, Ogun State capital spoke with newsmen at the 8th Session of the National Council on Industry, Trade and Investment. Enalamah said the Federal government is striving to end the current economic recession. He said:”You will start seeing result at the end of this year and early next year. As far as I am concerned, next year is a year of results. All the work we are doing will start yielding results from this quarter.

“The level of delivery in 2017 will surprise everybody. People may be saying we are not doing anything but it is impossible for a man to start broadcasting a plan we haven’t really put together well.”

The Minister however, stated that the strategic focus of the ministry’s master plan for Diversification and Growth of the Nigerian Economy is: “Partnering with Private and Development Capital to Leverage and Catalyze Resources for diversification and growth.”

According to the Minister, ”The challenge in every economy is that of infinite demands and finite resources. With limited resources therefore, the Diversification and Growth plan, otherwise known as the MITI Plan is based on a partnership with the private sector.”

He emphasized that based on resource constraints and low price of commodities, including oil, it is an urgent necessity to partner with the private sector so as to leverage and catalyse resources and development capital. According to him, President Muhammadu Buhari has approved the establishment of the Presidential Council on Ease-of Doing Business (PEBES).

We, as Nigerians, must see the connection. The global perception is that this country is a tough environment in which to do business. We must change this negative perception. Positive perceptions will attract investors, capital, technology and best practices. Enelamah explained that already, we are seeing results of these efforts at the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC), a parastatal under the Ministry, with the 24-hour online registration of businesses.

The Nigerian Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas (NUPENG) has handed the Federal Government of Nigeria 21 days to halt the mass sack of its members by major oil companies or face mass action.

NUPENG made the disclosure in a communique issued by its Central Working Committee during a  meeting in Warri, Delta state.

The union, in the communique read by its President Igwe Achese, said:
NUPENG will take all necessary action to drive home its demands if FG failed to act in 21 days. We are 100% in support against anti-corruption, but there must be respite for Nigerians.
“Right now, our members and even those in other sectors are no longer able to pay school fees for their children and even afford rents. Worse still, those being sacked now are so treated without commitment to proper terminal benefits.”
It was also noted that due to the current economic recession oil majors and servicing companies are closing shops leading to over 3,000 lost jobs.

Manchester City midfielder Kevin de Bruyne has shared his thoughts concerning his time with Manchester United coach Jose Mourinho at Chelsea.

The 25-year-old believes his performances for City this season have laid waste to the criticism from his former manager.

De Bruyne told the Daily Mail, “I couldn’t say anything before as I wasn’t playing. If he says something to the press they are going to believe it because at that moment it was the only thing they had to listen to—the only evidence there was.

“But I don’t think I am like he said. I always want to play. I have played hundreds of times in my career and I am only 25. So I think I have answered it quite well.

“At the time at Chelsea, I had already many, many games under my belt. I didn’t feel I was like a normal 20-year-old because I had already played for years in Belgium and then on loan from Chelsea in Germany.”

The Belgian returned from a loan spell in the Bundesliga when Mourinho took over at Stamford Bridge in 2013, but struggled to get a start and moved to get first-team football.

He was sold to Wolfsburg for £18 million but later joined City just a year-and-a-half after for £55 million in the summer transfer window of 2015.

“I have no problem with Jose,” he added. “In some ways it was a good experience. It’s the only experience of not really playing and it gave me another aspect, to realise how to conduct yourself.

“I learned a lot about myself and I am happy with the decision I made to move on.”

City and United go head-to-head in the EFL cup on Wednesday. This is the second time they face each other this season. The first ended 2-1 to City in the English premiership.

Former world heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko says he is not contemplating retirement despite having seen three title bouts fall through this year.

“I’ve never thought about stopping, not once, after the defeat and losing my belts,” Klitschko, who lost his IBF, WBO and WBA titles to Tyson Fury last November, told German daily Bild.

“As long as I can perform in the ring, am fit and motivated, I’ll keep going.

“I want to box in March or April against IBF world champion Anthony Joshua.
“That’ll be the biggest heavyweight fight for years and hopefully it’ll be for three titles.”

Hamburg-based Klitschko, who turns 41 next March, has endured a frustrating 2016.

His rematch against Fury had been set for July 9, only for an injury to force the British fighter out.

Fury then pulled out of a second bout scheduled for this Saturday as he battles depression.

Earlier this month, Fury’s licence to box was suspended by the British Boxing Board of Control.

Fury has vacated the World Boxing Organisation (WBO) and World Boxing Association (WBA) titles he still held to focus on his recovery.

Klitschko had planned to fight on December 10 against Britain’s Joshua, who holds the International Boxing Federation (IBF) belt, but both camps say the fight will now not take place.

The Ukrainian has picked up a calf injury and the WBA has not confirmed whether the vacant belt would be on the line.

But Klitschko should meet Joshua in March or April next year.

“That (the calf injury) isn’t the reason why I won’t fight again this year,” Klitschko said.

His manager Bernd Boente said they were simply running out of time to get the Joshua fight set up for December 10.

“For the planned date, we’re simply out of time,” said Boente.

“Fight contracts would have to be negotiated, tickets sold and the TV partners needed to publicise the fight accordingly.”

But Klitschko is determined to fight again.

“There will be a couple of big, spectacular fights with me in the ring,” he added.

Gambia has announced its withdrawal from the International Criminal Court after accusing the tribunal of “persecution and humiliation of people of colour, especially Africans”.

Gambia is the third African to leave the International criminal court after South Africa and Burundi withdrew earlier this month over similar allegations of targeting African nations.

One of the biggest criticisms which has dogged the ICC has been its perceived bias against African countries and their leaders. Sheriff Bojang, Gambia’s information minister, said on state television;

“There are many Western countries, at least 30, that have committed heinous war crimes against independent sovereign states and their citizens since the creation of the ICC and not a single Western war criminal has been indicted,” Bojang said.

The withdrawal, he said, “is warranted by the fact that the ICC, despite being called International Criminal Court, is in fact an International Caucasian Court for the persecution and humiliation of people of colour, especially Africans”.

There are reports that Namibia and Kenya will be the next countries to leave the ICC.

These are early days but Manchester United’s world record signing, Paul Pogba has not yet shown any sign of beginning to repay his massive 89 million transfer fee.

It has not helped that United head coach, Jose Mourinho seems unsure of which position is a perfect fit for the Frenchman.
Mourinho has dismissed comments on his underperformance but admitted that the player would excel in a new role.

“He can play in so many positions. The problem is not the position. The problem is not the tactical system.

“The problem is, in my opinion, somebody that comes from a different style of football and needs this time to be at his best level in football that is really difficult to play, especially for midfield players.”

He added: “I think it is really difficult to play or adapt from different realities, but he is a phenomenal player. He has unbelievable potential.

“He has years and years to develop his game, so that expectation and investment from the club is based on that — a super player for the next seven or eight years.”

“With the quality of his pass, with his aerial game, with his agility in such a big body, for his defensive side of the game, coming from the back with the ball, he would be a phenomenal central defender, too,” he said.

PORT HARCOURT- THERE were mixed reactions, weekend, across states in the South-South to President Muhammadu Buhari’s Independence Day speech threatening to deal with Niger Delta militants.
Some leaders, who spoke to Us, said they completely agree with the President, while others rejected what they termed as provocative comments at a time everybody expected him to be temperate in his utterances. They maintained that the President should personally lead the much talked about dialogue with the stakeholders in the region to agree on the way forward.

President Buhari had said in his Independence Day broadcast that: “A new insurgency has reared its head in the shape of blowing up gas and oil pipelines by groups of Niger Delta militants. This administration will not allow these mindless groups to hold the country to ransom.

President Buhari participates at the 56th Independence Anniversary programme Presidential Change of Guards Parade at the Statehouse on 1st October 2016. “What sense is there to damage a gas line as a result of which many towns in the country, including their own town or village, is put in darkness as a result? What logic is there in blowing up an export pipeline and, as a result, income to your state and local governments and consequently their ability to provide services to your own people is reduced? “No group can unlawfully challenge the authority of the Federal Government and succeed.

Our administration is fully sympathetic to the plight of the good people of Niger Delta and we are in touch with the state governments and leaderships of the region. “It is known that the clean-up of Ogoniland has started. Infrastructural projects financed by the Federal Government and post-amnesty programme financing will continue. “We have, however, continued to dialogue with all groups and leaders of thought in the region to bring lasting peace.” Force not the solution But former Provost Marshal of the Nigerian Army, Brigadier-General Idada Ikponmwen (retd.), who hails from Edo State, said in his reaction: “All well-meaning people, both Nigerians and foreigners, including Britain and America, have made it clear that the answer to the problem is dialogue. “The idea of Mr. President threatening to use force or wanting to use force in this matter is an anathema, particularly when the boys have demonstrated their preparedness for dialogue and given their fathers the power to dialogue and negotiate on their behalf. “This fact is known to the President and his security chiefs, so why is he saying he is ready for dialogue and threatening to attack on the other hand? There is need for him to maintain a clear stand on dialogue and let us proceed on dialogue, which is what everybody is waiting for. No need threatening force because that is not the issue here.” Fire Brigade approach On his part, Presiding Bishop of Christian Chapel International, Calabar, Bishop Emmah Isong, said: “Talk about attacking militants by the President is just a self-serving effort, which will lead us nowhere. Right now, we do not even know the number of militant groups that exist. We have lost count of them. “We do not even know where these groups are and in which state of the Niger Delta they are operating from. The last camp discovered in Ogun, which is far stronger than the Niger Delta Avengers, said they have 98 camps in the creeks. Some of them said they are still about 4,300 men in the creeks. So how do you fish out all these men in the creeks with bombs? “Is he saying he is going to bomb every creek in the Niger Delta because of militants? Right now, the Avengers are about four splinter groups, so which group is the President going to attack? “Look, militancy has become employment forum for the unemployed youths. Youths of our nation are hungry and unemployed. Militancy comes from very simple circumstances and if you can address those circumstances such as hunger and idleness, which should be the focus of the government, the problem will be solved and not talk of attacking them. “Is he saying the farmers should not go to bush again or fishermen should not go to the creeks again because he wants to attack militants? He should think of something better to do, not attack, which is fire brigade approach.” Return fire for fire Cross River State political activist, Cletus Obun, however, said: “Militancy in the Niger Delta is an orchestration of the political intolerance by some disgruntled political elements. “These people have been granted amnesty and a Ministry for Niger Delta Affairs created to assuage the pains of the region, but they have returned to armed struggle and when somebody given an amnesty returns to armed struggle, he is asking for military action, which the President said he was going to undertake. “These people are just three per cent of the population of the Niger Delta, who now hold the entire population to ransom by destroying oil installations and in such circumstance, what do you want the President to do other than return fire for fire? “Niger Delta is an Ijaw creation, which has refused to key into efforts of the present government to change the Niger Delta. Look at the clean-up of the Delta by government, which was commended by the United Nations Conference on environment.” From Delta State, Senator Ovie Omo-Agege, who represents Delta Central senatorial district in the Senate, disagreed with those berating the President. He said: “First, I commend Mr. President for the maturity and patience with which he has handled the insurgency in the Niger-Delta. This is obviously as a result of his military upbringing. He knows the consequences of the use of force. “I want to counsel more patience, while dialogue is encouraged. I want to use this medium to appeal to our brothers to stop these senseless attacks and channel their legitimate grievances through their elected representatives. That is why we are there.” Buhari not against dialogue All Progressives Congress, APC, Governorship candidate in Delta State in the last elections, Olorogun O’tega Emehor, concurred with Omo-Agege. He said: “In the first place, the President was upfront, he identifies with the issues of the Niger Delta and he will continue the dialogue. He is already having talks with leaders and groups in the region. He, however, emphasized that he will not be held to ransom by criminal elements, whose objectives are not that of developing the region. “I believe, however, that all sincere men of goodwill from the Niger Delta will support the President on this. Let us have peace with no conditions attached. What we already have, including NDDC, Amnesty Programme, and Niger Delta Ministry, should be reinforced to develop the region. “Individuals should not hold the region back and this is what the the Minister of Transportation, Chief Chibuike Amaechi’s initiative is all about.” President should not threaten citizens But Timi Tonye, who represents Patani Constituency in Delta State House of Assembly, disagreed with them, asserting that presidents, anywhere in the world, were assumed to be statesmen, who would not threaten their own people under any guise. He said: “Protests of any form in a democracy are signs of dislocations. Straighten these dislocations and the protests fizzle out. The most effective means of straightening dislocations in democracies are through constructive engagements, which cannot be too much in a democracy. “This is what we shall continue to advocate for Mr. President when dealing with either Boko Haram insurgents, Niger Delta agitators or any other such groups that use violence as instruments of drawing attention to their plights. “It is more effective than issuance of threats. Suffice it to state here, however, that one totally abhors violence as instrument of agitation, no matter the circumstances.” Hypocrisy President, Niger Delta Security Watch Organization of Nigeria, Dickson Bekederemo, posited: “The President by his comments, has demonstrated clearly his insincerity in his quest for dialogue as a means of resolving the age long issues of oil governance. “At one point, he sought for dialogue and the oil rebels obliged him by constituting a team to dialogue. As soon as the team was constituted, he declared war against them. The Niger-Delta Avengers are simply saying by their action, ‘stop exploration and let us agree on how to live together and on what terms.’ “This is a non-violent approach in the resolution of Niger-Delta issues. A sincere President ought to have constituted his own dialogue team by now.” Nothing to cheer The Ijaw Youth Council, IYC, spokesman, Eric Omare, said in his reaction: “There is really nothing significant about President Buhari’s Independence Day speech, with respect to Niger Delta agitators and resolution of the Niger Delta problem. “Threatening to deal with agitators and at the same time, promising to negotiate or saying that negotiations are ongoing, has become his trademark. Buhari’s position with respect to the Niger Delta can best be described as a study in contradiction and absurdity. “He lacks a clear cut idea on what to do about the Niger Delta. I do not take whatever he says seriously. In my view, it is becoming more and more obvious that Buhari does not have the will to resolve any of the issues agitating the Niger Delta people and it is unfortunate.” Threats won’t solve problems In Rivers State, former President of Ijaw National Congress, INC, Prof Kimse Okoko, told Vanguard: “These (threats) are old clichés that do not help the matter at all. We agree that no section of the country should hold the country to ransom. “But more importantly, an unjust society will hold itself to ransom. It is better for the government to start implementation of the 2014 National Conference recommendations, if they don’t want any part of the country to hold the government to ransom. “That is the most peaceful way of resolving the problem of the country. No amount of threat will resolve the problem of the country, so long as there is injustice, oppression, so long as there is inequality. They should learn from what is happening in other parts of the world. So his clichés do not help the matter. “The way out is implement the 2014 National Conference Recommendations, using the six regions as the federating units. This way, they would have taken care of the major problem causing the apparent turbulence confronting the system. “It is now clear with 27 states not being able to pay salaries that the state structure certainly cannot hold in the new arrangement as was proposed at the National Conference. There were 18 states that did not want to go along with regions. “Now, it is clear that this country cannot sustain most of the states that are almost totally dependent on the centre, that is why I said they should use the six regions as federating units.” Buhari spoke in past, not present tense Professor Andrew Efemini of Philosophy Department, University of Port Harcourt, said: “Mr.President spoke in the past; we have crossed that level of his statement. My idea is that anybody who uses force in one way or the other is involved in military activities. “So, if Mr President was talking about vandals, if he militarizes the region, it will create more problems, more violence. We agree that nobody should hold the country to ransom, but that cannot be achieved by mere statements. Only policies will produce what they intend to achieve, policies that address the root cause of the problems. “The root cause of the problem is that we are not running a federal system. Any party in power in the country at any time that does not understand why there is crisis in the Niger Delta, that it has to do with the nebulous, parasitic political structure that we have, is deceiving itself. “Mr. President is speaking in past tense. We have passed that level of statement he is making. That statement portends dictatorship. If he is a democrat, he should bring international agencies, United Nations and all that to help him resolve the issues, just like he intends to do with Boko Haram

.“Those of us involved in looking at development issues in the country know that the President is not about to resolve the problem. I can assure him that militarization of the region is not a solution.”
A’Ibom leaders flare up In Akwa Ibom, prominent leaders and citizens of the state described Buhar’s statement as unfortunate. Reacting, Air Commodore Idongesit Nkanga, (retd.), insisted that no other option could work, besides dialoguing with the militants and respected leaders from the region, who the agitators have accepted and recognized to speak for the region. “We have said severally that use of force is not the answer to this problem. Do not just say you will deal with them because it is not that easy. If it is that easy, I mean it could have been done with a snap of the finger. But you know that we cannot do that. It is not possible, it is not practicable. “It is not about how many guns and aeroplanes that you have. Look at what is happening with the Boko Haram. Let us be very honest, Nigeria is going with a lot of equipment, which Boko Haram does not have.

“They were using aeroplanes, have you heard any aircraft coming from Boko Haram? But they were still coming out here and there. “If we have conventional war against other countries, we can overrun some of those countries, but here, you are dealing with people in low intensity conflict. So the answer is not to say you will deal with them because if you do that, you get the issue more complicated.” Nkanga stressed that what the government of the day should do was to try and find out the root causes of the problem, like most Nigerians home and in Diaspora have advised, to ensure a lasting solution to it. Careless statement Similarly, Senator Anietie Okon, who could not hide his disappointment over Buhari’s statement, recalled that it was not the first time he had threatened to deal with the Niger Delta militants and urged him to embrace dialogue, if he was sincere in ensuring a lasting solution to pipeline bombings.
“The United Kingdom, US and other nations have told him (President Buahri) that the path to ensuring peace in the region is dialogue, and he is still keeping to his jaundiced approach to issues and still bent on the 95 per cent corridor, where he said that those who gave him 95 per cent votes will benefit more from his government.

“He said that he will deal with Niger Delta militants, good luck to him. He has this mindset that they are people to be conquered.

For him to say that he will deal with them is an unfortunate evidence of a relapse into believing that boots can be solution to the issue, where they can trample upon the people and decimate them by mere strength. “To say he will deal with them is the most unfortunate term to use. Even if he was going to crush them, he should not come out to say that,” he said. Lack of diplomacy In his reaction, the member representing Mbo Local Government Area, one of the oil rich areas in Akwa Ibom, Samuel Ufuot said: “The President needs to adopt more diplomatic approach in the Niger Delta issue.
“It cannot be fought with physical weapon. Let him embrace dialogue as late Yar’ Adua did. There must be negotiations. Let him look into some of the reasons the militants are agitating. I remember one of the reasons was a reduction in the budget of the Niger Delta. “The President increased allocation to the North East zone to rehabilitate the areas devastated by Boko Haram and because of that reduction, some of our people abroad under the Presidential Amnesty Programme were seriously affected. “When our leaders cried out then, the President did not listen to them. Also, there is the issue of sharing of oil blocs.

The southerners do not have oil blocs and all the oil blocs are here. We had the first President from this region and until he left office, he had no single oil bloc. Some of these things are annoying.
“Let him call the leaders from the region, negotiate with them. I do not think using force can solve the problem.”
Focus on issues National Publicity Secretary, Ijaw National Congress, Mr Victor Borubo, said: “What the Niger Delta need more than anything is peace. When you talk about militants holding the nation to ransom, are you implying that they just woke up one day and decided to hold the nation to ransom?

“If you look at the country carefully, you will find that it is the various governments that have held the nation to ransom and not the people themselves.

“Because the government has created the conditions that made the unwholesome activities possible. If there had been avenues for peaceful dialogue, useful discussion, definitely people are reasonable.
“The militants have made representation on what their demands are, which are not far from the general demands of the people. “Nobody is saying that anybody should go and blow pipelines because it is our environment that is getting destroyed. Why not look at what the demands are. “For me, it is easier and more productive for Mr President to focus on the issues.

“The issues festered for many years, the early signs were there. Our past leaders like Dappa Biriye, Isaac Boro drew attention to the issues but were ignored.
“We want the government to succeed.

The government should dialogue with the people to move the nation forward. All these threats will not help us. The other time, Mr President said he was going to treat militants like Boko Haram. At another time, he said he was going to hold dialogue, nothing happened.

Militants: Buhari’s threat tears N–Delta leaders apart

Chief Chukwuemeka Ezeife, who holds a doctorate degree in Economics and who has a Commander of the Order of the Niger, CON, award and was Third Republic Governor of Anambra State as well as being a former Presidential Adviser on Political Matters to ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo. He was also a member of the 2014 National Conference in this interview, the retired permanent secretary, speaks on burning national issues including economic recession, the debate on sale of national assets and the Biafran agitation, among others.

THE Federal Government pushed the country into recession. Some of the actions are inexcusable. Some are very pitiable. What affects the confidence of economic agents is what they see, what they hear, what they feel. If the government of the country begins to say the government is broke, they (investors) have nothing to doubt. That accounts for so many exits from Nigeria.

There were all kinds of normally unprintable things said by our government: that we are bankrupt, we are broke, we are this and that. They took over and within a very short time they started making negative statements about the economy. This is not a matter of blaming anybody. You just look at how many companies have quit Nigeria. I know of a friend who brought in some expatriates to co-invest with him here. They were just about to get started when the first salvo from government was fired that the country should not be invested in, because that is what it means; that the country is broke, that it is a poor economic decision to come here. So, the foreigners ran away and the man is still struggling now to get new partners.

As millions of Christians flee the Middle East and Christianity’s original homeland becomes lacking of Christians at increasing rates, an odd anomaly is occurring:

Christianity in the Gulf states is surging. Amid a shocking exodus in neighbouring countries, this strictly Islamic region has seen a jump in its Christian population.

Figures show that in both Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, Christianity was practically non existent just over a hundred years ago. There were only 80 Christians in the UAE in 1910 (0.1 per cent of the population) and 50 in Saudi Arabia, even less than 0.1 per cent, according to a recent study. However one hundred years later in 2010, Christianity had exploded to 12.6 per cent of UAE’s population and 4.4 per cent of Saudi Arabia’s. Between the two countries alone there are now well over one million Christians. While by no means a majority, this represents a a significant growth in such a conservative Islamic region.

Indeed, this surge is not limited to Saudi Arabia and the UAE. Throughout the Gulf, countries such as Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman and Qatar have all seen dramatic increases to their Christian populations.

Converting from Islam to Christianity in the Gulf is punishable by death in both countries and evangelism is prohibited. In Saudi Arabia any public observance of non-Muslim faiths is illegal and Saudi Christians are forced to worship in private. However despite the dramatic increase, it is likely there will be little change to religious tolerance in the region. Wahhabism, a strict interpretation of Islam, still dominates Saudi Arabia in particular and even in the relatively liberal UAE, Christian converts face severe persecution and no religious education other than the teaching of Islam is permitted.

Although the recent increase of Christians in the Middle East is truly amazing, many are asking why this is happening. Over the past few years, thousands of Middle Eastern muslims have claimed to have seen Jesus in dreams and visions; is this just a strange coincidence or is God actually trying to speak to these people before it’s too late?

“In the last days, God says, I will pour out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your young men will see visions, your old men will dream dreams.” // Acts 2:17

The future is therefore uncertain for Christians in the Gulf. But as Christianity loses its most ancient communities in the Middle East, the arrival of Christians in Islam’s most conservative heartland may be a source of hope to those praying for a revival in the Middle East.

Governor Jerry Brown making a statement at a press conference
SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) – Gov. Jerry Brown has agreed to restore the voting rights of convicted felons serving time in county jails.

The bill that Brown announced signing Wednesday also reinstates the voting eligibility of felons on probation or under community supervision beginning next year. It does not affect those in state or federal prisons.

AB2466 stems from California’s criminal justice realignment, which led to some people convicted of low-level felonies serving time in county jails.

Republican lawmakers say felons should not be allowed to cast ballots while serving a sentence, with Sen. Patricia Bates of Laguna Niguel saying it compromises the integrity of elections.

Democratic Assemblywoman Shirley Weber of San Diego says opponents don’t want to allow certain people to vote. She says civic participation can be a critical part of reducing recidivism.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC has arrested a chieftain of the All Progressive Congress, APC, Benjamin Apugo, at his village, Nkata Ibeku, in Abia State.

His arrest on Friday September 30, 2016 was sequel to a July 4, 2016 warrant issued to that effect by a Federal High Court in Umuahia presided over by Justice D.E. Osiagor after the accused failed to appear before the court to take his plea on a three-count charge bordering on obtaining money by false pretence brought against him by the EFCC.

He was alleged to have fraudulently sold six plots of land valued at N36 million belonging to the Nigeria Railway Corporation located at Umunwulari Nkata Ibeku layout, Planning Scheme Umuahia.

A previous warrant was issued for the arrest of the defendant on October 8, 2015 by Justice F.A. Olubanjo after he had failed to appear before the court on same charge.

Though the politician had earlier been invited by the Commission where he made statement under caution and was released on administrative bail, he had since then become elusive.
He had however through his counsel, Earnest Ojukwu, tried to frustrate the case on three previous instances either by applying for the quashing or the transfer of the case to another judge.

After Justice Olubanjo was transferred and Justice Evelyn Anyadike took over the matter, Mr. Ojukwu, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, moved a motion to quash the charge and set aside the bench warrant. This was refused prompting him to petition the Chief Judge stating that the defendant has no confidence in the judge.

Based on the petition, the Chief Judge transferred the case to the present judge, Justice Osiagor who heard the two applications and in a considered ruling, dismissed application to quash the charge. He also suspended the bench warrant.

He, however, ordered the defendant to appear before him pursuant to Section 87 of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act, 2015 on the next adjourned date of July 4,2016, an appointment which for the umpteenth time, the APC chieftain failed to honour necessitating the latest arrest warrant to produce him in court on Wednesday, October 11.

One of the charges against the defendant reads:

“That you Prince Benedict Benjamin Apugo on or about the 7th day of March 2013 in Umuahia within the jurisdiction of the Federal High Court of Nigeria with intent to defraud obtained the sum of six million naira (N6,000,000.00) from one Mr. Obioma Nehemiah Isiuwa, when you falsely represented yourself through his agent, Mrs. Adline Victor ‎Nkwo, to be the owner of six plots of land valued at thirty-six million Naira (N36,000,000.00) located at the House of Assembly Road by Ochendo By-Pass in Umunwulari Nkata Ibeku layout, Umuahia, Umuahia -North Local Government Area, Abia State otherwise called Ogurube layout, which pretence you knew to be false and thereby committed an offence contrary to section 1 (1)(b) of the Advance Fee Fraud and Other Related Offences Act, 2006 and punishable under section 1 (3) of the same Act.”

Yoruba elders fumes at President Muhammau Buhari’s administration, says they made a great mistake by not queueing behind Jonathan who has good plans for Nigeria.

The leaders are particularly angry with Buhari over his lop-sided appointments into key positions, which they feel was a big blow to the South west region.
They berated the president saying that their region have not benefited from his administration despite voting massively for him during the April 2015 presidential polls.
“For the fact that the South-West played a key role in the emergence of Buhari as the President, it is expected that they would occupy a more strategic position than the post of vice president”, said one of the elders.
They argued that the National Assembly leadership election has given the impression that their region is weak politically.
Some of the leaders who also participated in the last National Conference also say the region must re-strategise to assert itself in the politics of the nation.
They argued that the position of Professor Yemi Osinbanjo, the current vice president, who is a South west indigene is not a powerful position.
Chief Ayo Opadokun, a South-West leader, who spoke to the Nigerian Pilot yesterday on the current power imbalance, noted that the Yoruba race made a great mistake by not re-electing former president Goodluck Jonathan, considering what he had in stock for the zone.
He emphasised that the implementation of the National Conference report would elevate the standard of the zone, which is the reason people of the South-West should have queued behind Jonathan.
Also speaking on the issue, image maker of Pro- National Conference, Wale Okunniyi, faulted the emergence of Saraki and Dogara, which he described as a conspiracy against the Yoruba nation by some powerful forces in the APC.
Another prominent South-West leader and lawyer, Asiwaju Bisi Adegbuyi, focused on how the Yoruba race can move forward saying, the region needs self-determination rather than a symbolic representation.
“Yoruba race should know what they want. Yoruba made progress when Chief Obafemi Awolowo led us”, he said.

– Google added new feature allows users of iOS use incognito mode with TouchID.

– Google’s incognito mode can not be referred to as a perfect private browser, so you still need to be security cautious.

Google Search app on iOS has made things easier to search in incognito mode which makes it easy to open up disposable sessions there too.

Also it is set up so that if you leave the app and need to come back to the search, you can lock it using TouchID, so even on a shared device like an iPad, someone else can’t easily see what was in there. The new feature to search in incognito mode is being added in an update to the Google app that’s coming out today.

Google doesn’t close private searches when you leave its app, you have to manually close them yourself. By requiring Touch ID authorization to see those searches again, Google is able to protect against one of the reasons people might have been using a private search in the first place: family and friends seeing what they’ve been up to.

It should be noted also that Google’s incognito mode can not be referred to as a perfect private browser. As Chrome warns you when you open a private tab, the incognito mode doesn’t hide your browsing from your employer, your internet service provider, or the websites you visit.”

Along with adding secret searches to its iOS app, Google has integrated YouTube video playback from within the app, instead of opening a separate app to watch clips.

Google wrote on its official blog, stating: “Skip the extra step before you break into dance to your favorite music video or before you learn a thing or two in the latest how-to…”

If you find Incognito searching useful, we hope you enjoy the new feature. You can also feel free to leave a comment below.

– Amazon, Facebook, Google’s DeepMind division, IBM, and Microsoft partner to form Partnership on Artificial Intelligence.
– The collaboration will foster communication among those who build AI.

One of the biggest tech collaboration has officially commenced with Amazon, Facebook, Google’s DeepMind division, IBM, and Microsoft to fund a new organization called the Partnership on Artificial Intelligence to Benefit People and Society.

According to Alanturing – “Artificial Intelligence (AI) is usually defined as the science of making computers do things that require intelligence when done by humans. AI has had some success in limited, or simplified, domains.”

Partnership on AI will support related research and recommend best practices in ethics, transparency and privacy when it comes to artificial intelligence studies. The project also aims to create an open platform where researchers and major players in the industry can communicate.

The official website for the project explains as follows: “We believe that artificial intelligence technologies hold great promise for raising the quality of people’s lives and can be leveraged to help humanity address important global challenges such as climate change, food, inequality, health, and education.”

The 5 tech gaints have seperately made a mark on AI project for example: IBM, has Watson, while Google has DeepMind, which you probably recognize as the the team behind AlphaGo. Amazon has Alexa, the voice assistance that’s loaded onto its Echo speakers, while Microsoft has Cortana and a whole bunch of chatbot projects. Finally, Facebook, depends on artificial intelligence for many of its features, including face recognition and its News Feed.

Facebook’s director of AI Yann LeCun said in a press briefing dedicated to the new project: “Every new technology brings transformation, and transformation sometimes also causes fear in people who don’t understand the transformation…one of the purposes of this group is really to explain and communicate the capabilities of AI, specifically the dangers and the basic ethical questions.”

Francesca Rossi representing IBM’s also stated: “This partnership will provide consumer and industrial users of cognitive systems a vital voice in the advancement of the defining technology of this century – one that will foster collaboration between people and machines to solve some of the world’s most enduring problems – in a way that is both trustworthy and beneficial.”

We hope the collaboration through achieves its aim, and reduce dangers in health sector, provide more ease with gadgets and the like. Feel free to comment on what you think about the collaboration.
