Biggest HIV Vaccine Trial To Commence In South Africa

A new clinical trial is underway in South Africa on an experimental vaccine that could safely prevent HIV, the virus that causes AIDS.

The study, which is expected to commence on Wednesday, could be “the final nail in the coffin” for the disease if it is successful, scientists say.

The study, called HVTN 702, aims to enroll 5,400 sexually active men and women aged between 18 and 35 at 15 sites across South Africa.

It will be the largest and most advanced HIV vaccine clinical trial to take place in South Africa, where more than 1,000 people a day are infected with HIV.

“If deployed alongside our current armoury of proven HIV prevention tools, a safe and effective vaccine could be the final nail in the coffin for HIV,” Anthony Fauci, director of the U.S. government’s National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), said in a statement released ahead of the trial.

“Even a moderately effective vaccine would significantly decrease the burden of HIV disease over time in countries and populations with high rates of HIV infection, such as South Africa,” he said.

Following years of global battle with the human immunodeficiency virus, researchers were encouraged in 2009 when a test of a vaccine on 16,000 people in Thailand turned up a previously unknown vulnerability in the resilient pathogen.

The vaccine was only 31 percent effective and wore off over time, so it could not be approved for use in a general population.

Should the vaccine prove to be 50 percent to 60 percent effective, experts say, that would be sufficient for drugmakers Sanofi Pasteur and GSK to begin licensing negotiations with the South African government.

The new vaccine aims to provide greater and more sustained protection and has been adapted to the HIV subtype that predominates in southern Africa.

“HIV has taken a devastating toll in South Africa, but now we begin a scientific exploration that could hold great promise for our country,” said Glenda Gray, chief executive officer of the South African Medical Research Council.

Ondo election: Akeredolu promises Okitipupa voters electricity after two years outage

The All Progressives Congress candidate for November 26 governorship election in Ondo State, Mr. Oluwarotimi Akeredolu (SAN), has promised to revive the state if elected.

Akeredolu made the promise during his campaign in Okitipupa Local Government Area of the state.

He also promised to restore electricity in Okitipupa LGA given that the area has not had power supply for more than two years.

He said, “We are poised to revive Ondo State and make the state viable again and restore the state’s old glory.

“The youths and women shall be empowered to take their rightful places.

“We have taken stock of the wants of our people in Okitipupa LGA.

“We shall restore electricity in Okitipupa LGA that has been in total darkness for the past two years now.”

How soldiers killed three female suicide bombers in Borno

Three young women with bombs strapped to their waists were gunned down on Friday morning by a military patrol team in Maiduguri in Umarari village along the Maiduguri-Damboa Road near Mulai in Borno State.

Spokesperson for the state police command, Mr. Victor Isuku, said in a statement that the suspects were shot dead as they tried to enter Maiduguri.

“At about 05:30hrs, three female suicide bombers with IEDs strapped to their bodies were sighted by military patrol team in Umarari village along Maiduguri/Damboa road near Mulai. They were moving towards Maiduguri. They were promptly gunned down and the IEDs on two of them exploded, killing all three of them,” the statement said.

According to Isuku, the unexploded bomb on the third suspect was later removed safely by the Police Bomb Disposal Unit, who were mobilised to the scene.

Renowned Nollywood movie director, Yomi Fabiyi, has made known his plans to divorce his British wife of four years.

Fabiyi said this after several months of denying that his marriage to Fran was sinking.

According to him, his marriage had completely failed and he had been unhappy for a long time.

The popular producer, on his Instagram page @yomifabiyi, said the major issue was the long distance between both of them.

He said his wife refused to come to Nigeria to live with him and that on his own part, he refused to settle down in the UK because of his career.

He wrote: “It’s so sad that a lot of people never give me the benefit of the doubt. Only a handful think it is right to respect my freedom of choice.

“I have been unlucky in life, most of what I do normally have opposite impression irrespective of my positive mindset. I cannot help it and will rather prefer to continue to be real as possible, I am used to being misinterpreted my entire adult life.

“I never aim to hurt anybody in words or actions before them or behind them. I am never raised that way. They forget that some people no matter how horrible the situation, still has some dignity left in them.

“Moreso, I have been vigorously warned by my parents never to prove to know if what am ready to give out is a guess.

“Fran is such a beautiful woman, supportive and wish I can live in England, take up employment and study. I HAVE USED HER DOCUMENTS TO RENEW MY NORMAL VISA ONLY, so no question she is not willing, I NEVER said that.

The outgoing governor of Edo State, Adams Oshiomhole, has formerly handed over to the governor-elect, Godwin Obaseki.

 At a brief handing over ceremony attended by members of the Transition Committee headed by Prof. Julius Ihonvbere and other members of the State Executive Council, Oshiomhole revealed that it was Obaseki that actually first asked him to contest for the governorship many years ago.

He recalled how Obaseki told him about the need to rescue Edo State and he replied four years later that he was ready.
He said Obaseki already knew details of the hand over notes as he was part of the governments without interruption.

“People say I will influence Obaseki but in truth he has been influencing me. In all of the eight years, he has been the brain box of this administration. God gave me the courage to get things done.
“The more I work with Godwin, the more I saw his commitment to transparency and to prudent management of resources which helped to deliver our landmark projects.
“He gets me to sign processed memos I had refused to sign. He introduced people I never met and get me to appoint them as commissioners. He is more familiar with the documents and knows what need to be done.”

Allardyce Not To Face Police Action Over Corruption Scandal

Former manager of the English football team Sam Allardyce has received a letter from the Football Association that states he is not being investigated by the City of London Police.

The 62-year-old left his role as Three Lions boss by mutual consent in September after a footage showing the former Sunderland boss offering advice to journalists disguised as foreign investors on how to circumvent rules on the third-party ownership of players was released by The Telegraph.


Allardyce said in a statement: ‘I welcome today’s confirmation from City of London Police that I will not be the subject of a police investigation.

‘I was always confident that this would be the case as there was no evidence against me. I now ask that the Football Association deals with this matter as quickly as possible.

Senate Urges FG To Declare State Of Emergency On Unemployment

The Senate in a plenary session on Tuesday has enjoined the Federal government to declare a state of emergency on unemployment.

Senator Duro Faseyi, (PDP, Ekiti North) who raised the motion explained his rationale behind sponsoring such move as he said that the number of unemployed Nigerians rose from 24.4 million in the first quarter to 26.06 million, ‎adding that the situation had worsened as some companies have closed shops due to recession.

“We are worried that the economic recession which has hit the country would multiply the level of unemployment in the country as more companies have started downsizing in order to cut costs”, Faseyi noted.

In his contribution, Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe (Abia Central, PDP), maintained that government cannot create job opportunities for everybody, while suggesting that government should create policies that empowers private sectors.

“Mr. President, distinguished colleagues, no government provides jobs for all citizens anywhere in the world, but what we should do is empower the private sector”, he said

Senator Okoji Oko Rose (Cross-River North, PDP) while speaking on the matter asked government to look towards agriculture which has capacity to absorb sizable number of citizens which also provides availability of food at the same time.

American mixed martial artist and interim Light Heavyweight Champion in the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), Jon Jones, has been suspended for a year after failing a drug test.

Mikel, Musa Yet To Arrive Super Eagles Camp Ahead Of Qualifying Match

Most of the invited Super Eagles players have arrived the country and will hold a training session on Tuesday morning in preparation for the 2018 World Cup Qualifier match against Algeria.

6 of the invited players are yet to arrive even as the training session begins 10 am at the practice pitch of the Abuja National Stadium.

The collapse began at around 05:00 local time near Hakata Station, the busiest in Fukuoka city in the southern island of Kyushu.

It began with two smaller holes that grew steadily until they formed one huge depression around 30m wide.

There were no reports of serious injuries but it disrupted power, water, gas and transport links in the area.

Officials quickly got people surrounding the sinkhole to evacuate the area.

But many who were trapped in buildings nearby posted photos of the scene on social media, warning others to stay away.

Broadcaster NHK reported that an elderly lady slipped on some stairs because of the power cut.

Engineering work to extend a nearby underground train line may be related to the sinkhole’s sudden appearance, city officials said.

According to the Fukuoka City Transportation Bureau, the road cave-in occurred after water began flowing beneath the surface during underground tunnel excavation work to extend the Nanakuma subway line.
