Biggest HIV Vaccine Trial To Commence In South Africa

A new clinical trial is underway in South Africa on an experimental vaccine that could safely prevent HIV, the virus that causes AIDS.

The study, which is expected to commence on Wednesday, could be “the final nail in the coffin” for the disease if it is successful, scientists say.

The study, called HVTN 702, aims to enroll 5,400 sexually active men and women aged between 18 and 35 at 15 sites across South Africa.

It will be the largest and most advanced HIV vaccine clinical trial to take place in South Africa, where more than 1,000 people a day are infected with HIV.
“If deployed alongside our current armoury of proven HIV prevention tools, a safe and effective vaccine could be the final nail in the coffin for HIV,” Anthony Fauci, director of the U.S. government’s National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), said in a statement released ahead of the trial.
“Even a moderately effective vaccine would significantly decrease the burden of HIV disease over time in countries and populations with high rates of HIV infection, such as South Africa,” he said.

Following years of global battle with the human immunodeficiency virus, researchers were encouraged in 2009 when a test of a vaccine on 16,000 people in Thailand turned up a previously unknown vulnerability in the resilient pathogen.

The vaccine was only 31 percent effective and wore off over time, so it could not be approved for use in a general population.

Should the vaccine prove to be 50 percent to 60 percent effective, experts say, that would be sufficient for drugmakers Sanofi Pasteur and GSK to begin licensing negotiations with the South African government.

The new vaccine aims to provide greater and more sustained protection and has been adapted to the HIV subtype that predominates in southern Africa.
“HIV has taken a devastating toll in South Africa, but now we begin a scientific exploration that could hold great promise for our country,” said Glenda Gray, chief executive officer of the South African Medical Research Council.
“If an HIV vaccine were found to work in South Africa, it could dramatically alter the course of the pandemic.”

Facebook CEO, Mark Zuckerberg has insisted that his social network enabled New York businessman, Donald Trump win the US Presidential election.

Despite several polls and media outlets predicting a landslide victory for Hillary Clinton, Trump managed to sweep the elections.
Zuckerberg spoke at a Techonomy conference in California and defended Facebook from claims that its Newsfeed helped influence the election in Trump’s favor.

“The idea that fake news on Facebook influenced the election in any way is a pretty crazy idea,” he said.

“If you believe that then I don’t think you have internalised the message Trump supporters are trying to send in this election.”

“My goal, and what I care about, is giving people the power to share so we can make the world more open and connected. That requires building a good version of News Feed. We still have work to do on that. We’re going to keep improving it.

Google iOS Update Uses Incognito Mode With TouchID

– Google added new feature allows users of iOS use incognito mode with TouchID.

– Google’s incognito mode can not be referred to as a perfect private browser, so you still need to be security cautious.

Google Search app on iOS has made things easier to search in incognito mode which makes it easy to open up disposable sessions there too.

Also it is set up so that if you leave the app and need to come back to the search, you can lock it using TouchID, so even on a shared device like an iPad, someone else can’t easily see what was in there. The new feature to search in incognito mode is being added in an update to the Google app that’s coming out today.

Google doesn’t close private searches when you leave its app, you have to manually close them yourself. By requiring Touch ID authorization to see those searches again, Google is able to protect against one of the reasons people might have been using a private search in the first place: family and friends seeing what they’ve been up to.

It should be noted also that Google’s incognito mode can not be referred to as a perfect private browser. As Chrome warns you when you open a private tab, the incognito mode doesn’t hide your browsing from your employer, your internet service provider, or the websites you visit.”

Along with adding secret searches to its iOS app, Google has integrated YouTube video playback from within the app, instead of opening a separate app to watch clips.

Google wrote on its official blog, stating: “Skip the extra step before you break into dance to your favorite music video or before you learn a thing or two in the latest how-to…”

If you find Incognito searching useful, we hope you enjoy the new feature. You can also feel free to leave a comment below.

Facebook, Google and 3 Others Collaborate To Keep AI In Check

– Amazon, Facebook, Google’s DeepMind division, IBM, and Microsoft partner to form Partnership on Artificial Intelligence.
– The collaboration will foster communication among those who build AI.

One of the biggest tech collaboration has officially commenced with Amazon, Facebook, Google’s DeepMind division, IBM, and Microsoft to fund a new organization called the Partnership on Artificial Intelligence to Benefit People and Society.

According to Alanturing – “Artificial Intelligence (AI) is usually defined as the science of making computers do things that require intelligence when done by humans. AI has had some success in limited, or simplified, domains.”

Partnership on AI will support related research and recommend best practices in ethics, transparency and privacy when it comes to artificial intelligence studies. The project also aims to create an open platform where researchers and major players in the industry can communicate.

The official website for the project explains as follows: “We believe that artificial intelligence technologies hold great promise for raising the quality of people’s lives and can be leveraged to help humanity address important global challenges such as climate change, food, inequality, health, and education.”

The 5 tech gaints have seperately made a mark on AI project for example: IBM, has Watson, while Google has DeepMind, which you probably recognize as the the team behind AlphaGo. Amazon has Alexa, the voice assistance that’s loaded onto its Echo speakers, while Microsoft has Cortana and a whole bunch of chatbot projects. Finally, Facebook, depends on artificial intelligence for many of its features, including face recognition and its News Feed.

Facebook’s director of AI Yann LeCun said in a press briefing dedicated to the new project: “Every new technology brings transformation, and transformation sometimes also causes fear in people who don’t understand the transformation…one of the purposes of this group is really to explain and communicate the capabilities of AI, specifically the dangers and the basic ethical questions.”

Francesca Rossi representing IBM’s also stated: “This partnership will provide consumer and industrial users of cognitive systems a vital voice in the advancement of the defining technology of this century – one that will foster collaboration between people and machines to solve some of the world’s most enduring problems – in a way that is both trustworthy and beneficial.”

We hope the collaboration through achieves its aim, and reduce dangers in health sector, provide more ease with gadgets and the like. Feel free to comment on what you think about the collaboration.

US Election: Trump Attacks Clinton In ‘Hot Talk Showdown’

US Democratic Party’s presidential candidate, Hillary Clinton, has clashed with her Republican co-contender, Mr Donald Trump, in a hot television debate late Monday night.
The duo traded words over jobs, terrorism and race in a ‘talk showdown’ that lasted till the early hours of Tuesday.

The debate, which could be described as the most watch in TV history, was said to be observed by an estimated 100 million persons.
It also turned personal, as the republican candidate accused his democratic rival of not having the right temperament to be the next American President.

In a swift response, Mrs Clinton taunted the American billionaire by pointing out that he refused to release his tax returns.

Trump, however, promised to release them if Clinton would release the 33,000 emails that were deleted during an investigation into her private email set-up while she was the US Secretary of State.

Air Strikes Leave Aleppo ‘Without Water’ In Syria

The United Nations says nearly two million people are in desperate need of water in the besieged Syrian city of Aleppo.

UNICEF said violent air strikes launched on the city on Friday prevented repairs to a damaged pumping station supplying rebel-held districts of the city.

The agency added that in retaliation, a nearby station pumping water to the rest of Aleppo has been switched off.

Fresh strikes were also reported in the city on Saturday, as the Syrian Army pressed on with its push to retake rebel areas.

The latest offensive was launched after a ceasefire collapsed on Monday.
