NIGERIAN-born boxer Bob Ajisafe has become the new British light
heavyweight boxing champion after beating veteran Dean Francis in a
title decider in Reading over the weekend at a mini tournament.
Born Abubakar Ajisafe, the boxer who lives in Leeds, won the bout on points at the Rivermead Leisure Centre in Reading and now assumes the vacant title. Ajisafe, 28, who is a six foot two south paw, has now won 12 fights in his professional career, three of them via knockouts.
During Saturday's fight, the new champion showed the quicker hands from the outset and built up an early lead as he continually frustrated Francis’s attempts to get to work on the inside. Ajisafe had his man backed up on the ropes as the bell went to end the fifth round and it was a similar story in the next as Francis’s right eye started to swell.
As the fight wore on, Francis took plenty of clean shots but fought back gamely each time, preventing the referee from ending it early despite the often one-sided nature of the action.
Each of the judges scored in favour of the awkward Nigerian southpaw, although scores of 118-112 and 116-114 twice, scarcely reflected his superiority.
In the night's other bout, Leon Senior's fight with Tony Hill was aborted after two rounds when an accidental clash of heads left Hill with a badly gashed forehead. Both boxers were competing for the Southern Area light heavyweight title.
