The Super Eagles of Nigeria have been ranked as the number one team in Africa after a post World Cup analysis by sports website bleacherreport.com

The Eagles who incidentally are the reigning champions of Africa are placed in the 24th position in the world and are closely followed by the West African duo of Ivory Coast and Ghana who occupy 25th and 26th position respectively.

The newly crowned world champions Germany are rated number one in the world while the Dutch are in second place and Spain suprisngly are in third place according to the national teams' rankings.

As explained by those who carried out the ratings, to arrive at the latest rankings, every match from the last four years was assigned a value based on its importance.

For example, the World Cup final is given much more weight than a random friendly.

It is belived that the four-year window seems to be the perfect amount of time comapred to a shorter period which allows too small a sample size and a larger one would likely represent a different side.

While Nigeria climbed three steps to attain its new status, Ivory Coast made just one step while Ghana dropped four places which saw them tumbling on the analytical table.

Though much more was somewhat expected, Nigeria after sixteen years of unsuccessful attempts got through the group phase and put up a good fight with France for 80 minutes before caving in to late goals.

Unfortunately, rather than building on the gains and righting the wrongs, Nigeria’s football have been in crisis ever since the exit from the World Cup, a situation that saw the Nigerian Football Federation president Aminu Maigari arrested upon his return to the country and disbanded the federation before FIFA banned Nigeria from international football.

The future of the country’s football is obviously in a tenuous position even as moves are made to pacify FIFA for the lifting of the suspension slammed on Nigeria
