Building contractors and developers in Lagos State have been urged by the government to embrace professional specifications and employ qualified hands.
Lagos State Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Mr. Toyin Ayinde, asked the contractors to engage qualified professionals to supervise the execution of their projects.
Ayinde also asked them to test building materials before putting them to use.
According to the commissioner, it is pertinent to advise developers against using sub-standard construction materials capable of bringing about a collapse.
Ayinde asked the builders to seek advice from the Ministry of Physical Planning or the Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA) if the need arises.
The commissioner recalled that in 2013, one of the five incidents of building collapse was as a result of the use of sub-standard materials.
He reminded professional builders that they stand the risk of being sanctioned if found guilty of sharp practices.
Ayinde urged developers to display conspicuously a project board on site which should include the name of the applicant, plan registration number/date, plan approval number/date, site location, supervising engineer, supervising architect, start date, due date and contractor’s name.
The commissioner appealed to members of the public to call the attention of the ministry or LASBCA to any illegal construction or defective structure in their vicinity.
