THREE Nigerian women and a 10-year old girl lost their lives in Ireland yesterday when the car in which they were travelling crashed in what has been described as one of the most horrific accidents in recent times. According to the Irish police known as the Garda, the women were in their late 30s and early 40s and all four occupants of the car died on the spot. Apparently, the car in which they were travelling collided with a sports utility vehicle on the N4 near Lough Owel, outside Mullingar in County Wesmeath, near Dublin.
Two of the women who died, Queen Esezbor and Fanny Oraweme Akenbor, were cousins said to be in their 40s, while the other casualties were Pat Jeti in her 30s and her 10-year-old daughter Jessica.
They were from Clonbalt Woods in Longford and were part of a 100-strong Nigerian community in the town. They are understood to have been attending an evangelical church vigil in the Finglas area of Dublin and had their unfortunate accident on the way back home.
Ireland's Garda in Mullingar have appealed for witnesses and are particularly interested in speaking to anyone who may have seen a gold coloured 2003 Nissan Almeira or a black 2006 Kia Sorento four by four travelling on the Mullingar to Edgeworthstown stretch of the N4.
One local resident said: " The women and child were of African origin but they had been living for some time in Ireland. They were from Longford Town, at least one of them lived near the Longford Rugby Club." Local Fianna Fail member of parliament Robert Troy, added:
" “It’s horrific what has happened and it’s heartbreaking to hear about such a tragedy. People in the area are truly shocked. "Some poor family will have to be told that their loved ones will not be coming home to them. My thoughts and prayers are with them at this time.”
Ireland's Road Safety Authority also described the accident as an appalling loss of life. Anyone with any information is asked to contact Mullingar Garda Station on 044 9384000, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any Garda station.
