Government ministers doubt former CBN governor Lamido Sanusi's sincerity over peace

GOVERNMENT ministers have questioned the sincerity of former Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) governor and current Emir of Kano Sanusi Lamido in wanting to make peace with President Goodluck Jonathan after he withdrew his lawsuit against the presidency. On Thursday, Emir Sanusi withdrew his law suit against the federal government in which he was challenging President Jonathan's decision to suspend him from office. On February 14 this year, Emir Sanusi was suspended from his job by President Jonathan after a report into CBN operations indicted him for reckless spending. Since then, Mallam Sanusi has been involved in legal battles with the government, leading to opposition in Abuja to him being named the new emir. Last month, Mallam Sanusi, was announced as the 14th emir of Kano in succession to his uncle the late Alhaji Ado Bayero who died in a London hospital a week earlier. However, despite the new emir withdrawing his lawsuit and promising to work with the government, certain government officials doubt his sincerity. Mohammed Bello Adoke, the attorney-general of the federation and justice minister, told the National Industrial Court (NIC) sitting in Abuja that he was determined to pursue the legal action that was instituted against President Jonathan by the former CBN governor to its logical conclusion. In his suit Emir Sanusi had contended that only a two-third majority vote from the Senate could effectively oust him as CBN governor from office, irrespective of any allegation levelled against the occupant of such position. Although the case was originally filed before the Abuja division of the Federal Court, it was subsequently transferred to the NIC by trial Justice Gabriel Kolawole who declined jurisdiction to entertain the matter. In a Notice of Discontinuance dated July 1, 2014, Emir Sanusi's lawyers informed the Federal High Court in Abuja of his intention to discontinue his legal case against the government. It is believed that the new emir also apologised to President Jonathan, personally and through intermediaries, to forgive him for his public defiance and intends to visit Aso Rock soon.
