NIGERIA avoided another aviation disaster yesterday when an Ibadan-bound plane caught fire shortly just as it was about to take-off at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Airport in Abuja and was quickly grounded.

In what could have been another air calamity, the Overland Airlines aircraft was about to leave for Ibadan at around 4.50pm when one of its engines caught fire. It had 31 passengers on board, including Senator Kamoru Adedibu, the son of the late strongman of Ibadan politics Alhaji Lamidi Adedibu.

Immediately the problem was spotted, the passengers were evacuated to safety and the aircraft grounded. Olufunmilayo Rotiba, the chief executive of Special Travels and Tours, was also one of the passengers on the plane and pointed out that they were already seated before the incident.

Ms Rotiba said: “We first observed that engineers were frantically fiddling with the plane’s engine, then we suddenly saw smoke.  It was not funny at all, as all of us, including a senator, rushed out of the plane.

“We were subsequently evacuated by airport officials. As I am speaking with you now we are waiting for another plane from Ilorin, which we have been promised will take us to Ibadan."

Senator Adedibu described the incident as a horrible experience but thanked God that it did not happen while the plane was mid-air. He commended the pilot, the crew and airport officials for being observant and for the prompt rescue operation they mounted.
