Jurgen Klopp is reportedly in line to become Liverpool’s new coach following Sunday night’s dismissal of Brendan Rodgers. 

Northern Irish boss, Rodgers, was sacked after the Merseyside club’s 1-1 draw at neighbours Everton.

No deal has yet been agreed with the 48-year-old German, who won two Bundesliga titles with Borussia Dortmund, but it is understood the decision to part ways with Rodgers had been agreed prior to Sunday’s Merseyside derby defeat.

Former Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti, 56, is also in contention.

The BBC Sport’s Ben Smith says Carlo Ancelotti is in London, where the Reds have an office, but reiterates the Premier League side are upbeat on opening contract talks with Klopp.

The urgent need for change at Anfield had been contemplated by many in recent weeks, but the perceived delay by owners Fenway Sports Group (FSG) appeared to signal they were looking to have 42-year-old Rodgers at the helm for as long as possible, making Sunday’s announcement, a bold decision at that.

“Although this has been a difficult decision, we believe it provides us with the best opportunity for success on the pitch. Ambition and winning are at the heart of what we want to bring to Liverpool and we believe this change gives us the best opportunity to deliver it,” a statement on the club’s website read.

“The search for a new manager is underway and we hope to make an appointment in a decisive and timely manner.”

Liverpool have won only four of their 11 games in all competitions this season, including last month’s 3-2 victory over League Two Carlisle at home in the Capital One Cup.

The highlight of Rodgers’ three-and-a-half-year reign at the club was their second-placed Premier League finish in the 2013-14 campaign, when they were top of the table with three games to go, before conceding to Manchester City.

“We would like to place on record our sincere thanks to Brendan Rodgers for the significant contribution he has made to the club and express our gratitude for his hard work and commitment,” the joint statement from principal owner, John W Henry, president Mike Gordon and chairman Tom Werner said.

“All of us have experienced some wonderful moments with Brendan as manager and we are confident he will enjoy a long career in the game.”
