NIGER Delta militant leader Mujahid Dokubo Asari has joined the growing number of people dismissing the recent assassination attempt on former head of state General Muhammadu Buhari as a publicity stunt designed to attract public sympathy. On Wednesday, Retired Major General Muhammadu Buhari narrowly survived an assassination attempt in the Kawo district of northern Kaduna when a suicide bomber detonated a bomb right next to his motorcade. According to General Buhari, he has no idea who wanted him dead but it is generally believed that the attack was carried out by terrorist sect Boko Haram. Since the attack, General Buhari's opposition party the All Progressives Congress (APC) and President Goodluck Jonathan's People's Democratic Party (PDP) have been blaming each other for the incident. According to the APC, such attacks take place because the government is not providing adequate security, while the PDP has accused the opposition of playing politics with the incident. Some opponents of the General have gone as far as saying the whole event was state-managed as part of a political public relations exercise. Mujahid Asari, the leader of Niger Delta Peoples Salvation Force and former president of the Ijaw Youth Council, joined those voices, saying General Buhari masterminded the attack on himself. According to Mujahid Asari the former head of state and presidential candidate in the last three elections, plotted to kill many innocent Nigerians in the explosion. He added that General Buhari and his group would fail in their conspiracy and desperation to take over power from President Jonathan. Claiming he knew the erstwhile Nigerian leader so well, the former militant leader said General Buhari was not known to be driven in a bullet-proof car prior to the incident. He alleged that the use of an armoured jeep in his motorcade started recently which confirmed his stand. Meanwhile, the primate of the Anglican Church, Most Reverend Nicholas Okoh has said that last Wednesday’s bomb attack on former General Buhari proved that nobody was free or spared from Boko Haram attacks. However, he advised the federal government to be careful not to be stampeded into taking action that would endanger the lives of the over 200 schoolgirls abducted in Chibok, Borno State by the Boko Haram.
