ALIKO Dangote has been named as the 25th richest man in the world with an estimated fortune of $25bn in the latest Forbes Magazine's list of the world's wealthy people.


According to the latest listing, Alhaji Dangote has jumped from 43rd place last year when he was valued at $16.bn to become the first black man to break into the top 25. He remains Africa's richest man and the top Nigerian on the list followed by Globacom chairman Mike Adenuga, who has an estimated wealth of $4.6bn and sits in 325th position.

Famfa Oil  boss and fashion icon Folorunsho Alakija, retained her position as the world’s richest black woman and the 687th in the world with a fortune of $2.5bn. Alhaji Abdulsamad Rabiu, the chairman of the BUA group of companies, was ranked 1372th in the world with a projected wealth of $1.2bn.

Former Microsoft chairman Bill Gates, is back in the global number one position after a four-year hiatus, reclaiming the title of the world’s richest person from Mexico's telecoms mogul, Carlos Slim Helu. Mr Gates, whose fortune rose by $9bn over the past year, has held the top spot for 15 of the past 20 years.

Spanish clothing retailer, Amancio Ortega, best known for the Zara fashion chain, retains the number three spot for the second year in a row, extending his lead over Warren Buffett, who is again in fourth position. The year’s biggest dollar gainer was the Facebook’s founder, Mark Zuckerberg, whose fortune jumped by $15.2bn to $28.5bn, as shares of his social network soared.

They are four of 26 newcomers whose fortunes come from technology, 10 of whom are American, including Dropbox chief executive Drew Houston and Workday co-founder, Aneel Bhusri. On as country-by-country basis, the US leads the list with 492 billionaires, followed by China with 152 and Russia with 111.
