This is coming barely days after the Scheme announced that all the 2016 Batch “B” Stream “I” Prospective Corps Members (PCMs) deployed to Ondo State would commence the exercise on Tuesday, November 29
.
The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), wishes to inform the general public and, especially, Prospective Corps Members deployed to Ondo State, that due to the Ondo State Governorship Election slated for Saturday, 26th November, 2016, Ondo NYSC Camp would now open for the 2016 Batch ‘B’ Orientation Course as from Tuesday, 29th November to Monday, 19th December, 2016.
However, Thursday, 24th November, 2016 remains the commencement date for other states of the federation.
All Prospective Corps Members deployed to Ondo State for the 2016 Batch ‘B’ Orientation Course are to take note, please.

The Borno Government said on Monday that it would re-open public secondary schools next week, two years after they were closed due to Boko Haram insurgency.

The state’s Commissioner for Education, Alhaji Inuwa Kubo, revealed in Maiduguri that Internally Displayed Persons (IDPs) occupying the schools had been relocated to allow for resumption of academic activities.

Kubo said that repairs had been carried out on all the structures in the schools to provide atmosphere, conducive for teaching and learning. “I wish to announce that on Sept. 26, all public schools are going to be re-opened.

“I want to state that government has repaired all the structures damaged by the IDPs in the schools, to ensure comfort for the returning students. “Parents and guardians should please make sure that they send their children back to school,” he said.

Kubo, however, decried the prolong closure of the schools and the fact that proprietors of private schools took undue advantage of the development to charge arbitrary fees. “We understand that some of them have taken undue advantage of the closure to hike school fees; we will not allow the situation to continue.

“We are going to visit the schools to find out how much they are charging and how much they are paying their teachers.” It can be recalled that the schools were shut in March, 2014, after suspected terrorists attacked a school in neighbouring Yobe. The government reopened the primary schools in 2015 but could not do so with the secondary schools because they had been taken over by IDPs.

So I was very little when this whole journey started still trying to understand life but I realize I had to make a difference, I had to be reason for my own happiness, going through school was not easy it was like the hardest phase of life but I discovered new ways on how to make it better, I became thankful for each day, my life became my motivation, prayer became my daily routine and lived my life depending on God…i choose not to let disability get to me, I choose to show whole world the ability in disability, in fighting this difficult but interesting battle I have learnt that there’s always a bright light at the end of the tunnel.. A 300-Level Sociology student, Jephtaph Abolarin had written to the Authorities of the University of Ilorin, Kwara State, confessing to cheating during his West African Senior School Certificate Examination and seeking his withdrawal from the school.

However, the school authorities on Sunday said that they had accepted the voluntary withdrawal of the student from the institution.

Abolarin, who claimed he had become a ‘born again’ Christian, said going on with his university education, using an unmerited certificate was unjust and immoral, hence the need to leave the institution.

Abolarin submitted the letter to the institution’s Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Academics, Prof. Sidiqat Ijaiya, on August 5, 2016.

In the letter, he said it was expedient to withdraw from the school since he got his WASSCE through examination malpractice.

The institution’s Deputy Director, Corporate Affairs, Kunle Akogun, confirmed the withdrawal yesterday.

Akogun, while noting that the Senate of the university had accepted the withdrawal letter, added that the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Abdulganiyu Ambali, commended Abolarin for his repentance and sincerity.

Part of Abolarin’s letter reads, “Just as a house that was built on a faulty foundation will surely collapse, it is also certain that a career that is built on a faulty foundation will definitely collapse.

“All through my secondary school days, I was just a church ‘goer’, without genuine salvation and the fear of God. As a result, I got my WASSCE result through examination malpractice.

“By the grace of God, now, I have encountered the light of the gospel of Jesus Christ, which called for repentance and restitution.

“Sir, with deep conviction, I have realised that there is no point building my academic career on a faulty foundation; since the WASSCE result I got through malpractice is the basis in which my admission into this university was anchored.

“Therefore, I have decided to withdraw from the university and start all over again.”

A site run by a friendly and reasonably honest woman I know recently reposted a text titled “The Man Who Created AIDS: Robert Gallo.” The text went super-viral, over 80,000 shares on Facebook alone. Once I read it, I was aghast at how much misinformation and how many scientifically illiterate statements were in the text and attached video.
I wrote her explaining my reasoning, and she immediately agreed to take down the text. It still exists on other, less responsible, sites.

Unfortunately, a large part of the damage has already been done, and that among other articles has helped foster the continued existence of a completely unfounded theory based primarily on not understanding what a patent is in molecular biology. A patent on Ebola or HIV is not the same as a patent on an engine.
Whereas the engine’s patent is reserving the production of that type of engine to the patent holder, a patent on HIV or Ebola is a patent meant to specify how the virus was isolated, how the genotype was determined, and what this consensus genotype is.

In biology, you can patent things you found to concretely identify that component, potentially for use in a more complex system later. Keep in mind that you can even patent seeds obtained from cross-pollination: the patent does not mean the species was genetically modified in a laboratory.

The same way a patent on cross-bred species does not mean it was created in a lab, a patent on a virus genome does NOT mean it was created in a lab. Robert Gallo first published his isolation and identification of HIV in 1984, and patented this in 1985. After older blood samples were then analysed in a search for this virus, it was then found in the past: it didn’t suddenly occur in the 1970s or 1980s.

Despite the claims of the article whose damage I am working to undo, the earliest samples of HIV positive blood did not originate from New York homosexuals from the 1970s, but instead date back to 1920s Congo.

The virus most certainly did not originate from biological weapons programs, which are only today becoming advanced enough that creating such a virus is even theoretically possible. They were most certainly not advanced enough in 1920, or even 1960, to create a synthetic retrovirus, which I might add, has still never actually been accomplished. One of the articles I saw blaming Gallo comically claims that chimps were supposedly deliberately infected and released in 1979, which somehow led to the virus occurring in New York in 1971.

The viral “Gallo did it” article that I convinced my friend to take down had an embedded video, where a man “explains” over dramatic music that HIV was created through “combining lymphoma, leukemia, and carcinoma viruses.” I literally burst out laughing, because none of what he listed was a retrovirus or even a virus, and cancer has literally nothing to do with HIV.

You could spend your entire life combining lymphomas, carcinomas, and leukemia, and you would still never end up with a retrovirus at the end.

All of these theories make very specific claims, without any evidence. They encourage me to believe that a man (who thinks cancers are viruses) has special knowledge and access to untold classified documents. To prove his point, the video displays extremely blurry documents that are barely legible beyond seeing Gallo’s name.

For all we know, these documents are completely fake, or actually completely harmless. We don’t know, because as is the norm in such articles or videos: no sources are supplied. Yes, the United States did and maybe still does have biological weapons programs. The Soviets did, and Russia still runs its “Vector” high-security lab, as well.

This is absolutely no indication that HIV is a bioweapon, especially considering the actual time-line of infections. There are even more reasons why Ebola is certainly not a bioweapon, but that is beyond the scope of this text.

Gallo was a scientist, and a researcher, and his position in the public eye is yet another reason to doubt him being an evil mastermind. There is no historical evidence actually implicating Gallo, or any others, in creating a HIV virus.

All of the historical and scientific evidence, as well as a general understanding of patents in science, point to a legitimate researcher, along with his peers, simply trying to identify understand a human illness. There may very well be one or more synthetic doomsday viruses sitting snugly or being worked on in undisclosed locations (or in BSL-4 labs), but HIV and Ebola are not examples of this.

With the high rate of unemployment in Nigeria and the undeniable fact that graduates whether full or half baked are churned out yearly in their millions from the different universities, a lot of people have begun to wonder whether university education is still worth its onions like it was in years past. For instance the value of a university degree has depreciated over time. It is arguable that a university degree is now worth about the same as a secondary school degree was in the past. Based on this, many people now think, skills and talents training should be emphasized over a university degree. DailyNews9ja has gathered a couple of points to shed more light on this debate…

Expensive: Before now university undergraduates paid little or nothing to earn a degree and were treated as kings and queens when they graduated. Older Nigerians have often regaled the youths with tales of how they had whole chicken on Sunday, hostel bedclothes washed and irons for them and a meal ticket everyday including various options of employment on graduation but today many Nigerians pay millions to get the same degree and end up unemployed at the end of the day.

Aside the stress of gaining admission, lectures and lecturer troubles are also faced by students.

Talents: Some people spend as much as four, five or six years in the university for a degree they might eventually never use and probably end up as a professional makeup artist, fashion designer or photographer. Imagine if such specialty schools were what they focused their energy on from the onset instead of the the university thing they probably didn’t need in the first place?

Return on investment: Only a few Nigerian graduates actually get the dividends of going to the university while many just spend most of their their productive years either searching for a job or enslaving themselves in the form of underemployment. Some even have to cope with very pitiful working conditions, working hours and horrible take home pay.

Distinction: OK, no one is saying a university education is bad and has no merits at all. Whether we like it or not, whether a graduate has a good job or not, there is still respect from the society, but we hope things get better all round for graduates in this country. Whether they end up as photographers or clothes makers, they still sort of have more ideas and packaging than those who don’t have a degree.

No member of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) is under compulsion to serve in the insurgency-troubled Northeast region of Nigeria, the Director General of the NYSC, Brigadier General Johnson Olawumi, said on Saturday.

Olawumi also said that the few corps members serving in the area opted to do so of their own free will and that they cut across people from all parts of the country.

“I salute those who choose to go there (Northeast) for their service. Corp members are not forced to go there, the few number we have now are those who opted to go there and they cut across the whole country”, he said.

The NYSC boss made the remark while fielding questions from reporters during the closing ceremony of the scheme’s maiden edition of a one week Preparatory Course for State Coordinators Course 1 (PCSC 1/15) for assistant directors, held at the Nigerian School of Military Engineering (NASME) barracks in Makurdi, Benue State.

Brig.-Gen. Olawumi expressed satisfaction that despite the risk taken by corps members to serve in insecure environments, no casualty has been recorded among them.

He added that the NYSC goes the extra mile to monitor and ensure corps members’ safety in the area.

Also speaking, the NYSC Coordinator in Benue State, Mrs. Esther Atamewan, said at least 5,000 corps members would be expected in the state as from tomorrow even as she urged the general public to adequately cooperate with them as they move from one part of the country to another.

No fewer than 25 students and staff members of Adamawa State Polytechnic, Yola, were affected in the blast at Jambutu Jumaat mosque on Friday, Adamawa state government told the federal government delegation led by the Secretary to the Government, Dr. Lawal Babachir in Yola.

President Mohammadu Buhari has sent the delegation to the state to commiserate with the government and people of Adamawa.

The State Commissioner for Higher Education, Mr Hamid Rufai said that four of the 25 students lost their lives while the rest, including two staff members, sustained various degrees of injury.

Mr Rufai added that the affected mosque belongs to the polytechnic community, which is located on the Jambutu campus, about five kilometres away from the main campus.

The Chancellor of Kano University of Science and Technology (KUST) and Africa’s richest man, Alhaji Aliko Dangote has pledged to pay four- year wages of 15 science- based professors to teach at the university.
In a press statement addressed to LEADERSHIP in Kano to mark the 15- year anniversary of the university, the Vice Chancellor, KUST, Prof Shehu Alhaji Musa added that the business mogul has also promised to construct houses for the professors.

The vice chancellor stated that the university is currently undergoing serious improvement in all spheres where an international acclaimed university wishes to be.

According to him, capital projects worth N8 billion are either completed, ongoing or on early stage of development, from individuals, Tetfund sponsored projects, as well as the state government.

He noted that the university is in collaboration with various stakeholders from within and outside Nigeria in view of making the varsity best among equals.

Alhaji explained that the university has made huge progress in the last 18 months and that has been achievable with the support of his dedicated academic and non- academic staff.

Prof Alhaji revealed that the university has produced four professors and scores of PhD holders as well as other qualified teachers who are currently studying in various universities across the world.

Dangote Employs 15 Professors To Teach At Kano Varsity

As a means of awakening the Federal Government on their demand for a better working condition, lecturers of the University of Jos, UNIJOS, on Friday commenced an indefinite strike.

This was announced in a statement signed by Prof F. C. Piwuna, the Chairman of the University’s chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU.
Piwuna said the industrial action was approved by the ASUU National Executive Council.

According to him, “The NEC of ASUU has approved our request for total, indefinite and comprehensive strike starting immediately.

“It means that all activities: teaching, supervision, examination as well as statutory and ad hoc committee meetings have been suspended.”

Piwuna however failed to disclose further details on the reasons for the strike, even though it was gathered that the Academics are agitating for an improved working conditions.

The striking lecturers are also demanding that certain allowances being paid enjoyed by their colleagues in other institutions be paid to them.

As a means of awakening the Federal Government on their demand for a better working condition, lecturers of the University of Jos, UNIJOS, on Friday commenced an indefinite strike.

Two teenage girls left home recently to check the results of their promotional examinations to Senior Secondary School (SS2) but have not returned home since.

However, the disappearance of the two friends, Janet Abiodun (18) and Evenly Apalowe (17), has plunged their family members into anxiety.

The girls, both students of New Era Girls Secondary School, Surulere, Lagos, were believed to have gone to hiding because they reportedly failed the examinations. Janet’s aunt, Mrs Olufolake Oyinloye, said she waited for her for a long time, thinking she might have been kept busy in school. Oyinloye, however, became worried when it was night and there was no sign of the girl.

According to her, Janet did not own a phone, so there was no way to even call her. She said: “The following day, I went to one of her friends, Evelyn’s home. I was shocked to discover that she too had not been seen. I have searched everywhere for her. I have also called her friend’s parent in Osun State to confirm if they were there.

I do not think it is a crime to repeat a class. That is why she ran away. “I went into her room to check if she dropped a note, but there was nothing. She did not take anything in the house. I just do not understand her reason for running away.” Oyinloye recalled that when Janet collected her first term result, she had given her some gifts and urged her to do better next time.

Asked if Janet might have a lover, Oyinloye said no, stressing that the girl sworn to her that she was a virgin. She said: “The girl is my cousin. She has been living with me since December 22, 2013; after I saw the manner she was being treated by her father. I told my elder sister to persuade her to come and live with me. That was how she got to my place.

“I am not the harsh type. The only time I would say I scolded her was when she collected her second term result and hid it from me. What my children eat is what I used to give to her. I don’t discriminate between her and my children. I don’t know why she ran away? Oyinloye said she went to Janet’s school to find out if she had committed any offence, but was told by her teacher that after the students collected their results, one of her friends, whom they used to walk home together, told her that they should start heading home, but Janet refused, insisting that she wanted to walk with Evelyn. Since then nobody had seen the girls. She added: “Three days after they left home, Evelyn called her father on phone, saying she was in Ibadan.

But since then, the phone line had not been going through again. Evelyn’s aunt told me that the girl had left home once. She was sure Evelyn would soon return home.” Oyinloye said she also went to Area ‘C’ Police Command, where she reported Janet missing.

Teenage Girls Disappears For Fear Of Repeating Class In Lagos

Two teenage girls left home recently to check the results of their promotional examinations to Senior Secondary School (SS2) but have not returned home since.

The Ford foundation, as part of their efforts to empower young Nigerians, has partnered with The Future Project’s The Future Awards Africa (TFAA) on the Ford Foundation Prize for Youth Employment. The award seeks nominees who have positively demonstrated, drive and action by individuals actively tackling youth unemployment with positive impact in their communities. The nominees will be selected from each of the six geopolitical zones in Nigeria of which successful applicants will be interviewed in selected cities. These cities are: Port Harcourt, Abuja, Enugu, Ibadan, Kano and Lagos.

The call for nominations will run for one month starting from August to end September, 2015.
“We are delighted about this partnership with The Ford Foundation,” said Mfon Ekpo, Executive Director of The Future Project. “The goal of the Ford Foundation in West Africa is to improve governance systems and livelihood opportunities. This dovetails with the goal of The Future Africa Awards, which is to inspire the entire continent of Africa through the works of her citizenry.

This award is designed to recognize and support young Nigerians between the ages of 18 and 33 involved in a social program or projects that contribute to fight youth unemployment in Nigeria,” she concluded.
The competition will select six finalists, one from each Nigerian geopolitical zone, from which the final winner will be picked at the awards. A documentary on the winner will also be selected, and the final winner will be endowed with a $5,000 prize.

A Masters in Business Administration (MBA) degree is a huge investment in time and money. It begins with a rigorous application process, including the dreaded GMAT/GRE. There are sleepless nights studying and writing essays that probe into your most intimate experiences and future ambitions. Then, there is the long wait for a decision from the Admissions Board and, if you’re fortunate to get an offer, you have to source funding for tuition and living expenses and in most cases, overcome the hurdle of a convoluted immigrations process…..and all this needs to happen in a matter of months.

Earning Potential an MBA dramatically increases your earning potential. It is estimated that getting an MBA from a top business school can increase your earning power by over 150 percent, easily resulting in 6-figure starting salaries (in USD). There is also a high demand for MBAs in the growing global (particularly African) economy, and a greater appreciation for the skills and knowledge that MBAs bring to an organisation. Most organisations have special “Leadership Development” programmes exclusively for MBA hires, which put participants on the fast track for senior management, and even greater earning potential.

Career Realignment: The time spent in acquiring the MBA is a great opportunity to effectively realign your career. Most professionals did not have the benefit of adequate career counselling while growing up, and undergraduate degrees and first careers are influenced by parental desires or the result of optimistic guesswork. There is little regard for using your skills and interests to determine the right career for you.

An MBA can correct this and get you back on track to professional and personal fulfilment. Besides the opportunity to explore diverse areas such as Finance, Marketing, Operations, Organisational Behaviour, Strategy and Human Capital Management, there is also the structured support of career counsellors and diverse career development resources. In line with trends in global circles where corporate organisations identify undergraduates with requisite skills that match their goals, not a few experts assert that a curriculum change has become necessary in the nation’s educational system.

In the developed world, tertiary institutions are identified as centres for societal development. This is because ideally, their syllabi tie in with what employers of labour seek, and they constantly provide avenues for students to develop their latent skills so as to measure up to current demands by both the public and private sectors.

In recognition of this fact, experts from both the public and private sectors have urged both government and policymakers to restructure the curriculum at all levels of education (with emphasis on tertiary institutions), so that the nation’s graduates can hold their own wherever they find themselves, and most importantly, secure employment without hassle.

Sandy Ojikutu, team leader on education for a US-based organisation, notes that a curriculum is the vehicle through which knowledge is transmitted, and advised that policymakers should therefore make every effort to draw up a practicable curriculum. This, she projected, will in the long run provide educational, cultural and intellectual enrichment which comes with social benefits, development and progress.

“There is a need to work on how students are taught, there is a science of learning, and universities should bring it to bear on the way students are instructed. Also, university faculties need to be helped in their research and development, so they can be as current as possible,” she stated.

Like her, Ike Ehie, project director, Kansas State University, noted that if Nigerian graduates are to compete favourably on a global scale, there is the urgent need for those at the helm to structure a curriculum that includes cutting-edge content which can produce excellence in information technology.

In his words: “Introduction of a practicable business management education must foster an uncompromising standard of personal and ethical behaviour in students, who would lead the nation’s future workforce.”

Ehie precisely noted that the main criterion by which products from universities around the world are assessed is through the relevance of their curriculum to the goals of corporate organisations that would engage their services in the long run. To him, this is not a management system that is practicable within a sustainable business agenda, but a way of meeting corporate business goals.

Chinedu Duru, a human resource practitioner asserted that the whole concept of a curriculum change would, no doubt, provide human capability development that addresses key gaps, especially amid the current socio-economic challenges involved in graduate employment.

Duru further disclosed that this call is vital, especially now that the country is faced with a dearth of competent and skilled human resources required to steadily address the critical issue of unemployment in the nation.

To him, skills gap remains a burning issue in the structural academic, vocation and planning challenges which face the government today.

“Regrettably, products of our tertiary institutions are challenged by the fact that employers have to commit additional resources in training them. This unfortunate state has existed in our country for long and there is now an urgent need to raise far-reaching actions to stem the tide of this situation which consistently hampers progress in many facets of endeavour,” he noted. The HR expert proffered that for the country to move out the present quagmire as a developing economy, there is a need to support a curriculum that would boost sound education, urging entrepreneurs and administrators of the nation’s tertiary institutions to continue engaging in meaningful dialogue that would ultimately result in collective representation of interest and mutual awareness of the common purpose
