“This is one of the Directors of State of Osun Ambulance. She died yesterday in Osogbo while using her phone where she was filling her gas cylinder very sad. She was actually celebrating her mum's 70th birthday & she needed to go and refill as they ran out of gas while cooking. She went with her driver and getting to the filling station, she had a call & right inside her car, there was fire ignition & explosion as a result of the phone she answered close to the gas cylinder. Actress Paz de la Huerta accuses Weinstein of r*pe

Actress Paz de la Huerta has accused Harvey Weinstein of defiling her twice in 2010, joining dozens of women who have levelled s*xual assault allegations against the disgraced Hollywood mogul.
The 33-year-old, known for her role in hit TV series “Boardwalk Empire”, described the alleged assaults, which police are investigating, to Vanity Fair magazine.
The first occurred when Weinstein demanded to come inside De la Huerta’s apartment after driving her home, she said.
“He pushed me onto the bed and his pants were down and he lifted up my skirt. I felt afraid… It wasn’t consensual,” she told the magazine.
De la Huerta said the second assault occurred about a month later when Weinstein showed up at her building despite her having asked him to leave her alone, and suggested talking about it in her apartment.
She had been drinking and “was in no state. I was so terrified of him… I did say no, and when he was on top of me I said, ‘I don’t want to do this,’” the actress said.
“He’s like a pig… he defiled me,” she said.
New York Police Department spokesman Sergeant Brendan Ryan told AFP that the department is “aware of the s*xual assault complaints” and is “actively investigating them.”
“The NYPD continues to work with the Manhattan District Attorney’s office on the case. The investigation is ongoing,” Ryan said.
Accounts of abuse by Weinstein that were published last month in The New York Times and The New Yorker encouraged others to speak out, unleashing a cascade of allegations of s*xual harassment and assault against leading figures in Hollywood and elsewhere.

The Wife of the President, Mrs Aisha Buhari, on Tuesday, donated Christmas gifts to soldiers injured at the battlefield in Sambisa Forest.

The items were distributed on her behalf by Hajiya Nana Shettima, the Chairperson of Mrs Aisha Buhari’s Committee on Distribution of Donated Items at Maimalari cantonment, Maiduguri.

Shettima also visited other injured troops at the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital, Maiduguri.

According to her, Mrs Buhari’s gesture is to celebrate Christmas festivities with the injured and to appreciate their efforts in restoring peace.

“Both religions say how good and pleasant it is when God makes us enjoy together in peace, tranquility, progress and unity.

“I am not here in my own capacity alone but am wearing two caps; I am here representing the wife of the president and as a wife of Borno governor,’’ she said.

Prince Harry Wants The Internet & Media To Stop Harassing His Girlfriend

The internet has gone berserk since word broke that Prince Hary was dating Suits star, Meghan Markle. As with the internet and the media, it hasn’t all been good news as some of the trolling and comments have gone over the top.

In a rare move, the Kensington Palace released a statement condemning some of the comments made on the internet and in the media.

“His girlfriend, Meghan Markle, has been subject to a wave of abuse and harassment. Some of this has been very public – the smear on the front of national newspaper; the racial undertones of comment pieces; and the outright sexism and racism of social media trolls and web article comments.”

The statement added,

“It is not right that a few months into a relationship with him that Ms. Markle should be subjected to such a storm. He knows commentators will say this is ‘the price she has to pay’ and that ‘this is all part of the game.’ He strongly disagrees.

“This is not a game – it is her life and his. He has asked for this statement to be issued in the hopes that those in the press who have been driving this story can pause and reflect before any further damage is done.”

China And Taiwan Leaders Make History In Singapore

Leaders of political rivals Taiwan and China have met for the first time in more than 60 years for talks that come amid rising anti-Beijing sentiment on the self-ruled island and just weeks ahead of elections. China’s President Xi Jinping and his Taiwanese counterpart, Ma Ying-jeou, shook hands at the start of the summit in Singapore on Saturday.

Before the leaders entered a closed meeting, Xi said the two sides are “one family” and cannot be pulled apart. Ma responded by telling Xi the two sides should observe mutual respect after decades of hostility and rivalry and “respect each other’s values and way of life”.

“Even though this is the first meeting, we feel like old friends. Behind us is history stretching for 60 years,” he said. “Now, before our eyes, there are fruits of conciliation instead of confrontation.” It was the first such summit since China’s civil war ended in 1949.

The talks come ahead of presidential and parliamentary elections in Taiwan, in which the independence-leaning Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) is favoured to win, something Beijing wants to avoid. The ruling Nationalists, also known as the Kuomintang (KMT), retreated to Taiwan after losing the civil war to the communists, who are still in charge in Beijing.

Queen Elizabeth II To Become UK’s Longest-Serving Monarch

Queen Elizabeth II
Queen Elizabeth II is set to become Britain’s longest-reigning monarch next month, surpassing the record of her great-great-grandmother Queen Victoria around 5:30 pm on September 9 after 23,226 days, 16 hours and roughly 30 minutes on the throne.

The exact moment at which the 89-year-old monarch will reach the milestone is hard to pinpoint, as the precise time of her father king George VI’s death in his sleep in 1952 is not known.

However, the queen will not indulge in fanfare or celebrations, marking the occasion with just another public engagement — this time opening a new railway line in Scotland. Nor are there widespread street parties or other official events planned.

The mood is in keeping with the sober style of her reign, something inherited from her father and grandfather King George V.

The queen has “established a record of unimpeachable integrity”, said historian David Starkey.

“I think she is immensely respected. She has played the role with a certain dignity. In this touchy-feely age she has performed… in a slightly old-fashioned way.”

While queen Victoria, who reigned for 63 years and 216 days between 1837 and 1901, saw Britain’s power reach its zenith with a global empire and vast industrial expansion, the current queen’s rule has largely been one of British contraction.

It has seen Britain rebuild following World War II, dismantle its empire and turn to Europe.

The kingdom has weathered economic collapse in the 1970s and revival in the 1980s, unrest in Northern Ireland, the emergence of a less deferential society and mass immigration changing the country’s make-up.

The queen also calmly steered the monarchy out of the scandals that engulfed her reign in the 1990s.

She described 1992, in which her sons Prince Charles and Andrew separated from their wives and daughter Princess Anne divorced her husband, as her “annus horribilis”.

Her popularity reached its nadir when the “people’s princess” Diana, by then divorced from her son and heir Prince Charles, was killed in a car crash in Paris in 1997.

Britain was plunged into an unprecedented outpouring of public grief and the monarch was accused of lacking compassion and misreading the national mood in the aftermath.

Her decision to keep the family — including Diana’s sons, Princes William and Harry — mourning privately at their estate in Scotland rather than returning to London was deeply unpopular, as was the failure to lower the royal flag as Buckingham Palace.

After days of intense pressure, she returned to London and addressed the nation on TV, beginning a slow rehabilitation of the monarchy that saw her golden jubilee warmly celebrated by the public in 2002.

– Essence of ‘Britishness’ –

Judith Rowbotham, visiting research fellow at Plymouth University, said: “She has been on the throne so long, it’s difficult to conceive of the country without her.

“It’s part of the framework of what you think of when you think of Britishness.”

Andrew Gimson, author of “Gimson’s Kings and Queens: Brief Lives of the Monarchs since 1066?, said that had the queen’s heavy-smoking father not died young at 56, “we wouldn’t be celebrating now”.

“Either the king or queen doesn’t succeed at an early age, or they succeed young but die young as well. It’s unusual both to succeed young and live for a very long time,” Gimson told AFP.

Of the queen’s reign, he added: “I think it will be looked back on as a staggering achievement to remain so securely on the throne through a period of such tremendous social and economic change.”

Her record-breaking reign means there are now three generations of future monarchs waiting in line, for the first time since Victoria’s death.

The queen’s eldest son Prince Charles, 66, is now older than the British retirement age.

He is the longest-serving heir to the throne in British history, having held the position since the age of three.

Next in the order of succession is his eldest son Prince William, 33, and his eldest grandson Prince George, who turned two in July.

– ‘Quietly and modestly’ –

Writing in the preface to “Elizabeth II: The Steadfast”, a new biography by former foreign secretary Douglas Hurd, William said his grandmother’s “example and continuity” was a “model for a life of service”.

“Time and again, quietly and modestly, the queen has shown us all that we can confidently embrace the future without compromising the things that are important,” he wrote.

On her 21st birthday, five years before the early death of her father, the then-princess Elizabeth dedicated her whole life “whether it be long or short” to serving the Commonwealth and its people.

Besides Britain, she is queen of 15 other realms, including Canada, Australia, New Zealand and Jamaica.

She has been queen of several other nations, including South Africa, Sri Lanka, Pakistan and Nigeria.

Though she is the oldest monarch in the world following the death of 90-year-old king Abdullah of Saudi Arabia in January, she is only the second longest-serving.

That title is held by Thailand’s 87-year-old King Bhumibol Adulyadej, who took the throne in 1946.

From Stock Market To Weddings, Vote Delay Wreaks Havoc

The band was booked, invitations had been sent to 500 guests and two caterers hired to prepare a range of local specialities, including jollof rice and pounded yam.

Agnes Adedipe, a 28-year-old resident of Nigeria’s largest city Lagos, thought her March 28 wedding was coming together: then national elections were postponed to the same date.

“I am confused, angry and completely lost,” she told AFP.

Nigeria’s widely-criticised decision at the weekend to postpone the polls by six weeks because of violence by Islamist group Boko Haram has reverberated around the country.

The political uncertainty has further hurt an economy already hit by low global oil prices and led to warnings of a looming constitutional crisis.

But that offered little comfort to Adedipe, who sobbed as she contemplated reorganising her wedding in just six weeks.

Election day in Nigeria — initially scheduled for February 14 — is a public holiday and movement is restricted because of heightened tension and the prospect of unrest.

In short, it’s not an ideal day for a 500-person wedding and Adedipe will be forced to reschedule.

“This postponement has ruined my marriage plan,” she said.

– Nation on standby –

The National Security Agency (NSA) pushed for the vote delay on grounds that all available military personnel were deploying to the northeast to fight Boko Haram insurgents and would not be able to provide security on polling day.

Electoral commission chairman Attahiru Jega insisted he was ready for February 14 but ultimately yielded to the NSA guidance, leading to claims that he caved in to ruling party pressure.

President Goodluck Jonathan was facing a tough challenge from former military ruler Muhammadu Buhari, prompting claims that Jonathan loyalists desperately wanted more time to revive his campaign.

Nigeria’s economy, the largest in Africa and driven by crude exports, has been hammered by the slide in global oil prices and the election delay has only made things worse.

The naira currency hit a record low on Wednesday (203.1 against the US dollar) leading to concern that an extended period of political limbo will have wider consequences.

Razia Khan, head of Africa research at Standard Chartered, warned of “additional uncertainty” caused by the campaign extension and said needed policy adjustments to cope with falling oil prices could be delayed.

The stock market has also been depressed by a political environment “riddled with uncertainty and negativity”, added Gabriel Ilori Akinyemi, managing director of Valmon Securities in Lagos.

– Constitutional crisis? –

Buhari’s All Progressives Congress (APC) party has fiercely criticised the decision to delay the vote, highlighting clear inconsistencies in the concerns expressed by the NSA.

Last month, the agency’s main issue was difficulty in distributing voter cards, while last week security concerns had become the new focus.

The Boko Haram conflict has been raging for six years and while voting was always going to be complicated in the group’s northeastern stronghold, the military had previously said nothing about problems securing polling stations nationwide.

The APC said that “any further postponement can only lead to a constitutional crisis” and recalled the damage done by a similar crisis following 1993 polls.

Nigerians had hoped that vote, which the popular business tycoon Moshood Abiola was on track to win, would end a long period of devastating military rule.

Military ruler Ibrahim Babangida had other ideas and cancelled the ballot counting, which sparked months of uncertainty that ultimately saw brutal army general Sani Abacha take power for four years.

Lagos-based human rights lawyer Jiti Ogunye said Saturday’s postponement showed Nigerians that the supposedly independent election body could be “forced by the state to cow-tow and subvert the democratic will of the citizenry”.

He voiced concern that public confidence in elections would be further undermined as March 28 approaches.

As she tries to salvage her wedding plans, Adedipe may take comfort in the fact that her fiance is also familiar with political uncertainty, constitutional chaos and deadly unrest.

Her husband-to-be is currently based in Ukraine.
